Rubber chucky

Anyone using these? A friend let me borrow the XL and the jumbo a few days ago. I used the XL and really liked it. Was thinking about getting the set but the mini and micro seem quite small. My lathe is 12" and I do mainly smaller bowls and some boxes. I know it all depends on what I'm doing, but are you finding the smaller ones useful and worth purchasing? Also considered 3d printing something out of tpu but haven't explored it yet.

Next lathe?

I've got a Jet 1221VS which is my first and honestly I love it. I'm getting ready to turn a segmented bowl that's 11" and I am seeing the boundaries of this lathe. I have been eyeballing marketplace and Craigslist but nothing good in my area. I really like the the idea of a Jet 1640 but honestly I don't know that I'll ever need the length. For bowls and if I eventually get into vases, what's the minimum length you'd want without an extension? I'd love a powermatic 3520C but it's pricey. What are some logical next steps from a 12". Should I skip a 14" and go straight to a 16" or 18" ?

First segmented bowl

This is my first one just testing out my new jig. This is super addicting and I already have new rings cut that are larger ! Sweet way to get rid of scraps around the shop.

Contemplating Snapmaker U1

So my use cases honestly are probably about 75% single color and 25% multicolor. I vary rarely print anything other than PLA and when I do it's TPU. I currently have an A1 combo which works quite well, but have also had an ender and a P1S which I had tons of problems with. I'm definitely not a Bambu fanboy. I own one but am open to other options. I've been eyeballing the Snapmaker because the multiple toolheads interests me. But I have questions.

  1. Does the app feel as polished as Bambu? I print from my phone frequently.

  2. If only doing single color prints does bambu have any advantages? (I'm aware that the snapmaker wins on multicolor, at least for waste and time).

  3. Is snapmaker considered as reliable ? My A1 has been solid. Or am I going to be tinkering more?

  4. Should I wait a few months and see what else comes to market? Sounds like there are several things in the works and I don't NEED a new printer.

  5. Is maintenance harder because of multiple toolheads?

My next 3d printer

I currently have an A1 combo. I started on an ender s1 years ago and moved to a p1s. I pretty much learned on the p1s and had multiple issues but most of them were probably user error. I've had way fewer problems with my A1 combo then any of my other printers. The AMS lite seems to be much more smooth running than my AMS was with the p1s. Only downside is my printer is open concept so when I'm not using it I cover it with a cardboard box since I use it in my garage while I also do woodworking which creates a lot of dust. So I've been looking at enclosed printers again and noticed that bambu has many options now. If I want to occasionally do multiprint is bambu the best option for simplicity / ease of use? I'm not really interested in the h series as I don't care too much about the larger bed volume. I occasionally print from the mobile app and find that feature quite handy. What other brands are you all using for multicolor and are they as easy to use as bambu? I know there's a bunch of other players in the game and I'm just curious if I should be looking at other brands as well.

How to use these plastic tabs properly

So I got my first parallel clamps yesterday. There's 2 black plastic tabs on each that are removable. I'm assuming they're used to lift your wood off the rails somehow. But if I'm gluing like 10 pieces together these little tabs will only rest under a couple of them. Am I suppose to run a scrap piece parallel with the bars on top of these tabs and then lay my pieces to be glued perpendicular on top of that? If so won't it bow in the center? Should I just use wax paper or something over bars to keep them clean instead? I feel like I should know how to use these tabs but I don't lol

Cyclones

Hunting for a cyclone. Preferably on wheels but not mandatory. Is the harbor freight one any good? I hear the Oneida branded one mentioned a lot. Are these all mostly the same or are there major performance differences between brands? I noticed one of these is only $25 and can be mounted to a can lid. Are these effective or worth paying more for the other style ? I'm wanting one with 4" input and output as I'll be using it with a 1.5-2 HP collector that I'll be venting outside.

1 micron dust collector

What's the cheapest 1 micron dust collector that will work on a DW734 planer? I've also got a 14" bandsaw with 4" port and a 10" table saw with 2.5". Was gonna buy the Bauer dust collector but thought it might be a bit too big for my purposes and it has a 2 micron filter.

Rockler hose worth the price?

Rockler hose worth the price? It's almost three times the price of a clear one on Amazon. Says it's collapsible, is that handy or annoying like those collapsible water hoses? I hate those water hoses!

Dust collection

So I've decided to grab the Bauer dust collector this week. I'm trying to plan out my connections. I've got two tools that use a 4 inch port and two tools that use a 2.5 inch port. I can 3D print adapters or buy some fancy magnetic connections. I'm sure it's a bit of personal preference but do people find the magnetic connections work well or is the slip-on method preferred? Not sure if the magnetic ones would be gimmicky or not. All of my tools are in pretty close proximity so my plan is to have a 10-foot hose and just move the hose from tool to tool as needed, no hard piping or fixed pipes. Also I'm looking at clear hoses, Amazon has several for around $30 but rockler has one for twice the price. Is it any better than the cheapie Amazon ones?

Beginner question.

Is the Jet 12/21 a good beginner lathe? Or it it something I'd quickly outgrow? No interest (at least currently) in doing anything longer. But bowls, maybe vases, and fiddling around are in my future. Found a used Jet with Jet chuck set for $750.

Brad nailers

M12 Milwaukee or 18v Ryobi?

So I've got some old rigid pneumatic 16/18 guage nailers and doing some hobbyist stuff in my garage like building flower boxes and stuff and I'm wanting a battery powered nailer. After MUCH research my 2 favs are the M12 brad nailer and the Ryobi 18v P322 brad nailer. M12 is lighter and I've already got m12/m18 stuff but it only shoots up to1 1/2". Ryobi goes up to 2 1/8' but it's heavier. Anyone have experience with both of these? I went to home Depot but they didn't have either on display to hold and get a feel for. The Ryobi looks big and I don't know if I'll ever need over 1 1/2" and if I did I could use my rigids. But dang and home Depot I can get the Ryobi nailer with (2) 4ah batts, (1) 2ah batt and charger for $200. M12 tool only is $279. Can be found cheaper on eBay but huge price difference. Help me decide ??

I want to buy tools

I feel like I want to buy a couple more tools. Funny thing is I haven't even done any projects yet. But I'm going to. Here's what I have so far and what would be your next buy? I know this is going to depend on what I'm working on but I'm not exactly sure yet but I'm sure it will be smaller things. I know the best advice is to not buy a tool until I need it but unfortunately I always do things backwards ! I've got-

-10" sliding Mitre saw on portable stand ( I kinda wish I'd have made a dedicated spot for it on table so I don't have to set it up and put it away all the time ) -table saw -circular saw

  • router -trim router -jigsaw -orbital sander -hercules dust extractor -pocket hole jig -air compressor -16/18 gauge pneumatic nailer
  • pin nailer
  • (2) 3' clamps -(2) 2' clamps

Planning to buy retractable air hose and countersink bits.

8 1/4" DeWalt vs 10" Skil table saw

I'm losing my mind! Been researching for days and can't seem to make up my mind. I'm just a hobbyist who occasionally uses a table saw. I currently have a 10-in Ryobi that I've had for about 20 years or so. I just did a project and remembered how much I didn't like it so I have decided to upgrade. Originally I was thinking about replacing it with another 10" but don't want to pay the money for a 10" DeWalt. So that leaves the 10" Skil. (Budget is around $350). I have watched every YouTube video I can find and I really like the 8 1/4" DeWalt. Seems like if I needed a 10" I could just use my Ryobi and for small stuff which is pretty much all I will ever be doing I would enjoy using the DeWalt more. It looks so much better on the videos compared to the Skil products. Am I wrong or should I get past the name and just buy the 10-in Skil? Looks like it checks all of the boxes if I'm honest.

10" sliding mitre saw

So I'm just a hobbyist and do woodworking on occasion. I just had to trim out a vent that I installed in my attic the other day and I've had an old 10-in rigid miter saw for many years, probably 20 years to be exact. There's been times when 10-in wasn't enough although it doesn't happen often. I've decided I want to pick up a 10-in sliding mitre. Torn between the Skil and the Bauer. Anyone have use with either of these and which should I choose?

I have an area above my garage that I want to add venting to. It's about 25 ft by 25 ft. It goes from 0 in to about 6 in in the peak. I'm guessing it's around 700 sq ft. How many roof vents should I add? I was going to do gable vents but I have decided to do roof vents instead. I'm thinking about three roof vents and maybe four soffit vents?

So I want to add a Gable vent on either end of my garage. This is what it looks like, I would like to put it where the red square is. Is it adequate just to add a 2x4 on either side of the vent and remove the center one? Or should I frame it like a window? The vent is only going to be 12"w x 18" tall. I can't just cut the plywood and mount the vent while leaving the center 2x4 as my vent is too deep and needs to sit where the 2x4 is.
