Hey! My boyfriend is a big dog lover. I have only had cats when growing up so I don’t really know a lot about dogs, not even things that might be considered basic.
He has told me that he would love for us to get a dog, and I have said of course, because it means a lot to him. But I must admit that I don’t know a thing about them 🥹 I used to be terrified of them as a kid because I had some really unlucky experiences with them. It’s still rooted deep in me. I‘ve met and been somewhat close to my relatives dogs - but I’m still a little unsure about what to keep in mind when getting one. They seem quite different than cats haha

So I was wondering if you have any advice on
\- how to approach getting a dog
\- good breeds for a first time dog owner
\- any important knowledge you think I might benefit from knowing

Hey Reddit, I (22F) recently got into a fight with my boyfriend (24M) We have been talking about moving in together in the very near future, and it will be a 1 bedroom place with a kitchen and a bathroom. I had two cats prior to the relationship that we both consider our “children” and they will move in with us too. But the past week he has kept saying how ***he*** will be getting a dog soon.
He didn’t really include me in the decision, other than let me know that I can come with him to meet the dog when he finds one.
I have never had a dog before, and I used to be very scared of them when I was younger. I am a bit uncomfortable with it. And I feel like it’s a huge decision that will impact our lives for the next 10 years to come.
I have still, despite my experiences with dogs in the past, agreed to get a dog someday, because it means a lot to him. Someday being the keyword, because I feel like it’s quite bad timing right now. If we could just wait a few months or half a year then that would be totally fine with me. I am also worried that we have to deal with introducing the dog to the cats in the future and them grow up away from each other.
It’s going to be very crowded in a smaller space with that many animals, and I can’t get rid of my cats, he also has no problem with them and loves them. So they’re not the issue.
I just got very upset that he doesn’t include me in the planning, or seems to think about the bigger picture, when we have talked so much about moving in together soon. I got upset and told him I wasn’t a fan of the idea and we had our first mini fight ever. We don’t fight at all. And I can’t help but feel like I’m the asshole here, and now I’m just upset over his lack of consideration and also because I feel like I didn’t handle it very well.

(Btw I have Asperger’s syndrome and I don’t do well with sudden changes)
