Can't get Select + Start to work within games, with an Arcade Guys cabinet and RPI3 images

I'm setting up an older Arcade Guys cabinet, and I've tried some RPI3 images from Arcade Punks that are running under Emulation Station - but whatever I do, including configuring all of the buttons, the Select and Start buttons do not function within the games, both in console games that just need Start or MAME games that need a coin added before you click Start.

Also the hotkey button does nothing either, even though I configured it all.

I know it should work, and I'm probably missing something dumb.

I have the one attached but with four players.

The picture even shows the system I can't get to work LOL.

Best Arcade Stick For PC

I'm running my retro system from the Kinhank drive with some stuff added (mainly xbox it didn't have).

I'm currently using the latest official Xbox controller, and it works for most of the emulators, but I'm looking at Arcade Sticks for more of a retro feel.

What do you guys recommend to be the most compatible with PC based emulators? How many buttons do you actually need for most games?

Budget mini-pc that can run the Wii and Xbox360 emulators

Can anyone post some current links to mini-pcs that will run the Wii, PS3, and Xbox360 emulators?

Don't need a rocket ship, but need enough power to run these nicely.

I see some posts here but most are old and link to no longer available units.
