FYI: I "upgraded" to Gemini, now my alarm clock spies on me

A google home update in mid-sept killed the temp display on my alarm clock (lenovo cd-4n341y). When the home app updated recently, I allowed it to do the gemini 'upgrade' in hopes it would restore it. It didn't, and now basic assistant functionally is... quirky, to say the least (i.e. telling me it's currently 86 degrees when it was actually 52, asking if I want to hear Olivia Rodrigo's high-energy pop-punk or wistful piano-driven ballads when I ask it to play music, even though I've never heard this woman in my life). Many of these quirks are the subject of many other's posts.

So there's no temperature on the display anymore, and the assistant sucks. But the thing that really gave me pause is the fact I was constantly seeing the 'listening' indicator illuminated, even though no one said anything phonetically near "hey google"

For the record, I opted out of 'continue conversation'. In fact, this morning the home app updated and it immediately pestered me about enabling 'continue conversation' once again. Again, I declined. Ten minutes later I notice the clock listening to a conversation about bus schedules.

While I'm sure it's probably just collecting data to train it's faulty AI, the fact that they give you the illusion of opting out, then just do it anyway, really irritates me. I'm sure there's something buried in the TOS that states this is perfectly legal, or it's merely a 'bug', regardless...

Personally, I pitched the clock. Gemini will be well trained to the workings of a landfill. But I figured I'd write a quick PSA

Zen Hybrid SXFI Headphones Review (short version: Man, did these suck)

About a year ago, I decided to replace my old Zen Hybrid (first gen) as they were starting to get pretty ragged. Having a generally good experience with them (and with Creative products in general) I decided to kick it up a notch like Emeril, and shell out for the Zen Hybrid "SXFI"

The Good

  • Battery life

  • Quick charge

  • Bluetooth connection was pretty reliable

  • You could enable SXFI using programs other than the SXFI app. Although, I wouldn't recommend doing so, as the result was often tinny and robotic

The Bad

  • When attempting to connect to the SXFI app, it would often get to 16%, hang there for sometimes a full minute, then inform you it was unable to connect and you should reconnect the headphones

  • The above would occur everytime you looked at the app, even it was already playing audio and you just wanted to skip, play something else, etc. It would be locked up with the progress at 16%, and you would have to sit there and wait for it to fail in order to skip a song.

  • As mentioned above, while you could just not use the SXFI app, but enabling it using another player yielded iffy audio results

  • When I contacted support about these issues, they told me to reinstall the app. I did, and nothing improved

  • The plastic on one of the arms snapped after 13 months. Meaning they were badly built on top of everything else.

All stretch goals were achieved! Meaning there will be a Steam version, arranged soundtrack, arcade mode etc, and will be released Jan 21st 2027 (for Switch and ps5. I guess Steam version to follow later, and arcade mode will be a patch)

The last live stream has some wip footage

If you haven't played the original Karous, it's preeeety good

(sorry for the clickbait title, I couldn't resist)

I really don't understand the "interface customization" of eliminating a forward button

But if you (like me) want it back

Tools -> Appearance -> Interface customizations = OFF

These changes sure have been... unique.

Can we have square tabs back?

Sorry, this question is buried in several other complaint posts, but I just wanted to highlight it in it's own thread.

I really don't care for blob tabs, and one of the reasons I used Waterfox in the first place was to not have them.

But thank you for still allowing the user to put tabs under the address bar (even if they're blobs now)!

Enabling TV Remote on KDE Connect (for use with Plasma Bigscreen)?

So while exploring options to control Plasma Bigscreen, I came upon this option for KDE Connect in the documentation

The thing is, KDE Connect doesn't seem to have this option (at least not in the version I have installed 1.35.9), only a Presentation Remote which only has a left/right button, and doesn't seem to do anything in Plasma Bigscreen. I've combed through the settings looking for a manner to enable it to no avail, and google isn't helping.

Sorry if this is dumb, and thanks in advance.

Edit: There's no "solved" flair, so refer to this response

Plasma Bigscreen - Impressions?

Somehow I missed this was finally released in 6.7, and while I can find plenty of threads requesting assistance for varying issues, I can't seem to find any giving overall impressions of the experience.

Basically, I use an old clearance-rack Lenovo tower as a HTC (fifth time using that acronym), and do the usual stuff with it, iptv, steam, vlc for region locked discs (have a stand-alone player for discs in my region), playing mp3s, some streaming stuff, and light web browsing. I use windows 10, and while everything works, I'm kind of sick of having to keep a cheap, alkaline battery powered 'webtv' keyboard on my coffee table as a remote. I'd really like to keep it under the coffee table to only pull out when necessary, and I'd really like to stop being pestered about upgrading to Win11 every three days.

So to those who have used or are using it, how's your experience thus far? How's the UI? Can it do the above tasks with relative ease? Or should I let it cook for a couple versions?

tia!

While the '2 for 1' thing is fine, I wish they'd just commit to bringing back the old-school 'Guest Programmer'

I mean, look at the list for 2007 alone:

  • Alfred Molina
  • Tracey Ullman
  • Alec Baldwin
  • Joe Pantoliano
  • Danny DeVito
  • Brian Dennehy
  • Chris Elliott
  • Chevy Chase
  • Rose McGowan
  • Barry Levinson
  • Whoopi Goldberg
  • Charles Grodin
  • Cybill Shepherd
  • Larry Miller
  • Harvey Fierstein
  • Jerry Stiller
  • James Mangold
  • Elaine Stritch
  • Donald Trump
  • David Mamet
  • Jack Klugman
  • Maria Menounos
  • Paul Mazursky
  • Mark Mothersbaugh
  • Matt Groening
  • Thelma Schoonmaker
  • Gore Vidal
  • Martha Stewart
  • Neil LaBute
  • Alton Brown
  • James Ellroy
  • Kermit the Frog
  • Charles Busch
  • Graydon Carter
  • Renée Fleming
  • Todd Oldham
  • David Thomson
  • Paul Aguirre

Actors, authors, critics, playwrights, musicians, TV hosts, fashion designers, journalists, a muppet, TRUMP. Now it's 'an actor, then... another actor' edit: sorry, they do directors too. But still, hardly what you'd call 'eclectic' or even 'interesting'
