I am desperate for cashola so decided to apply for what I thought would be an easy gig, but even to apply you have to give 'Alex' an email and phone number (if you say no to the latter, it won't send your info to a recruiter until you agree). I am overqualified but they won't even conveniently accept my desperation.

School Chalk under an electron microscope. It’s almost entirety made up of fossilized shells of ancient single-celled marine plankton called coccolithophores (not oc)

employment is bleak in this city

It took me a year to find a full-time job and I really liked the one I finally got. (foreshadowing)

They let me go in under 3 months because of “restructuring”. My role has been made redundant. Terminated without cause stings a whole lot more than just being completely shit at a job. I can train to be a better employee but I can't overcome obsoletion. All I can do is hope they didn’t know this was coming before hiring me, because that'd...suck. I am not conspiratorial by nature, but how am I to stave paranoia under these conditions?

But whatever. I’m pragmatic. I started applying for jobs less than an hour after getting home from being let go. I am grateful they will give me a reference (assuming they don't see this post and take offense). I applied for EI too, but already got rejected as I don’t have enough hours worked because, as forementioned, I spent a year unable to find stable full-time work and in BC, you need 14 weeks/3.22 months (though I am disputing this decision with Service Canada). I think there is also something about EI being based on unenployment in your region, and Victoria isn't high enough somehow (probably because it is a government city which skews the stats)...I am just under the threshold, twofold. Classic.

The BDC had a presentation recently and claimed Canada is not in a recession, that the economy is just slow to grow/move. The Greek once said something about calling a fig a fig and a trough a trough, and Canada is more of a shallow depression these days than a fruit tree.

I genuinely don’t know what the point of anything is any more. There isn't even a point to this discouraging, rambling post. It could be summarised as 'our economy and employment outlook is bumming me out'. Like most people, I can't afford to not have a full time job. When I was hired, I had hopes and dreams. Ideas. Passion. Dare I say, ambition. All silly things under capitalism I suppose.

I am sure there will be those saying “just get another job” because they need to believe the system is fair. It's that easy. They need to believe stability is guaranteed if you work hard enough, because the alternative is terrifying and they'd have to face the fragility of reality. The truth is that the only things guaranteed in this life are unemployment and taxes.
