Windows Server licensing calculation

Hi,

I would like to understand how the Windows Server "Standard" license is calculated?

Under VM server farm below, there are total 17 VMs running (under 3 vCenter)

For Standard license, 2 VMs included with core licensing.

Therefore "9 license packs" (16-cores license pack) are required.

==========================

Calculation 1

For my understanding, the calculation should be:

  • (VCS01) host01 = 32 cores x 9 (vm01-17)
  • (VCS01) host02 = 32 cores x 9 (vm01-17)
  • (VCS02) host03 = 32 cores x 9 (vm01-17)
  • (VCS03) host04 = 16 cores x 9 (vm01-17)
  • (VCS03) host05 = 16 cores x 9 (vm01-17)

TOTAL = 1152 cores / 16 = 72 license

==========================

Calculation 2

Or depends on VM running on each vCenter

  • (VCS01) host01 = 32 cores x 3 (vm01-05)
  • (VCS01) host02 = 32 cores x 1 (vm06-07)
  • (VCS02) host03 = 32 cores x 3 (vm08-13)
  • (VCS03) host04 = 16 cores x 1 (vm14-15)
  • (VCS03) host05 = 16 cores x 1 (vm16-17)

TOTAL = 256 cores / 16 = 16 license

==========================

With Calculation 2 (256 cores), the cost is much lower than Calculation 1 (1152 cores) and DataCenter license (128 cores)

Which calculation method should be corrected ?

Thanks

Security concern: Wi‑Fi can be disabled from Quick Settings while the device is locked

Hi,

If the device is stolen, even when it is locked, the thief can disable Wi‑Fi and cellular data from Quick Settings.

Aa result, “Find My Device” will not work.

Is my understanding correct ?

Thanks

VMware license upgrade

Hi,

I would like to calculate the no. of required cores for vSphere 8 license upgrade.

Currently running 4 ESXi hosts on vSphere 7.

Under "Administration > License" of vSphere 7 vCenter, it's showed

Host 1

  • Usage: 2 CPUs (up to 32 cores)
  • Capacity: 2 CPUs (up to 32 cores)

Host 2

  • Usage: 2 CPUs (up to 32 cores)
  • Capacity: 2 CPUs (up to 32 cores)

Host 3

  • Usage: 2 CPUs (up to 32 cores)
  • Capacity: 2 CPUs (up to 32 cores)

Host 4

  • Usage: 2 CPUs (up to 32 cores)
  • Capacity: 44 CPUs (up to 32 cores)

What actual CPU cores license are required for vSphere 8 ?

Thanks

VMware license issue

Hi,

May I confirm whether "VMware Enterprise Plus" license is no longer eligible for renewal and needs to be upgraded to "VMware vSphere Foundation" (VVF) license ?

Thanks

SSL certificate renewal

Hi Everyone,

The industry is enforcing a phased rollout toward much shorter lifespans:

  • 2026: Maximum lifespan is 200 days.
  • March 15, 2027: Maximum lifespan drops to 100 days.
  • March 15, 2029: Maximum lifespan drops to 47 days.

For my working environment, there are IIS, application servers, VPN rely on SSL certificate.

Previously I just needed to update once a year.

Any automation can I use after this enforcement ? Or I will need to update every 47 days ?

Thanks

Hi,

Reviewing MS Windows 2025 Server license for upgrading existing Windows servers.

Existing environment hosted 5 VMware vSphere hosts.

  • 64 cpu cores x 3 hosts
  • 32 cpu cores x 2 hosts
  1. May I know 256 cores Datacenter license is required to purchase ?

For user CALs, a file servers served 70 users,

  1. 70 user CALs also required to purchase (Largest no. of users) ?

  2. Is my calculation correct ? Any others is required ?

Thanks
