Struggling with Taiwan Travelogue

“Taiwan Travelogue” might be a good award winning book based on exploration of relationships, social system and indeed, a well researched sociological analysis of society in Japan occupied Taiwan but I just couldn’t “get” it.

The explanation of food culture is so immersive and detailed but still not able to understand it as a vegetarian. Sounds exotic but very alienated kind of feeling. I tried to give it a lot of chances but it is going to my “didn’t finish it list” now!

New day, new book!!

Just started this book “Giovanni’s Room” by James Baldwin & completed only 10 pages so far, the premise feels interesting.

Didn’t read anything written by James Baldwin apart from The fire next time.

Book haul or book hoard!?🌻

Picking up books to remind myself that one day, I might actually read them.

Contrary to the anti-hoarding culture, I think everyone should hoard books. You never know when you’ll get that inner calling to pick one up. I’ve realised that don’t enjoy buying a book and reading it immediately. I need to build a zone around a subject first.

Most of the time, I just read the first page. If it pulls me in, great. If not, it goes back to the shelf until its time comes.

This has worked well for me!

I had been collecting books by Murakami for years without reading them. Then during the first COVID quarantine, something clicked. I picked one up and didn’t stop until I’d gone through almost everything I had. 10/10 recommend activity!

Books also make great gifts. I’ve gifted plenty of books I hadn’t read myself. More than once, a friend has read one, loved it, and insisted that I read it too. It becomes a shared reference point, a conversation that continues long after the gift is exchanged.

Thirdly, I’m a believer of books having a way in shaping your environment. Even unread, they remind you of the questions you’re interested in, the people you want to become, and the ideas waiting for you whenever you’re ready. I don’t see them as a pile of unread books. I see them as future versions of myself waiting for the right moment.

Mini book haul-

  1. Shunya toh paar by Osho
  2. Heer waris shah by Prof. Piara Singh Padam
  3. Ariel and other poems by Sylvia Plath
  4. Tuti Veena by Naval Singh

Also, book haul di vi flair bna hi do :)

Reading while travelling>>>>❤️‍🩹

Half way through this book called “English, August” by Upmanyu Chatterjee. Written in 1980s, it talks about the Indian bureaucratic system from pov of 24 yo newly recruited IAS, his challenges, boredom and alienation with the rural India.

TBH the book didn’t intrigue me much, because of overly sexualised musings of the protagonist.

Saying that, I loved how he viewed the absurd bureaucratic protocols, the colonial hangover shift of ICS to IAS and major cultural divide of cosmopolitan vs rural India. It’s funny and makes you laugh at certain places.

It didn’t hit me much while sitting in my usual reading spot but PRTC bus with heatwaves made the ride and reading worthwhile. I completed more than 30-35% of book in one go lol. Fair to say that nothing hits more than reading about bureaucracy while travelling free through PRTC bus (how I love being a Punjabi girlie, iykyk😛)

If there is one book I’d like to highlight/annotate all over, gotta be this one

The cost of living by Deborah Levy- There’s something about the way she writes or maybe the way she is weaving her ideas, I’m loving it so much. So much so that I want to read it again after completing it.

Share if you have read her work, would love to dwell more into her writings. I previously read ‘Things I don’t want to know’ by the same author, years ago. But it didn’t click in a same way with me or maybe I read it before the development of my prefrontal cortex lol.

Had me in a chokehold for good 3-4 hours🫯

Little late to the party-
Absolutely loved this small but interesting read. Still making various theories about the end, it felt abrupt but maybe that’s the beauty of it!

Do share your theories about end, in case you’ve read it!
