What's a gameplay scenario you've given up on making it work?

For me, it's mazes that are not abstracted through rolls or other mechanics. Dealing with a strict, grid-set labyrinth is too much mental work if playing with theater of the mind, and if the players are permitted to draw the maze then it takes a million years even if you hold their hand with the map-making. Of course, IT CAN WORK, and I know that some people can enjoy taking their time with a challenge like that, but I wanna do more things in my sessions, lol.

Posters I Made For People's Luchadores

I asked folks what kind of Luchador they would be in the ring, and made some photobashed art for each one. They made the characters in this roleplaying game I've been sharing here: CMT. A Lucha Libre RPG.

If you'd like to try it, you can get it for free here:

What'd be a good system for a The Warriors inspired campaign?

The Warriors as in the 1979 movie in New York City with the badass street gangs, the grime and the awesome music. What that means to me in a system would be grounded, fast-paced combat with few weapons, good chase rules, maybe a reputation system for your relationships with other gangs, etc.

What are the Stats or Skills that least justify themselves in a given system?

It depends on what kind of game you're playing, of course, but man, poor Performance of D&D. The issue is not there aren't cool uses for it, but as a DM I sometimes have to squint and encroach the purview of other skills to let it be a justified option. And I want it to be an option! But if you don't have a bard in the game, what play does it get?

The 6 Main Types of Luchador (In My View)

This is art I made for a project of mine, a free Lucha Libre role playing game. I know some of these Luchador types are not mutually exclusive (you can have high-flying rudos, of course) but I felt these 6 were pretty representative. I'm curious to hear if you would add any other classifications.

You can find the game here, if you're interested:

Servant of Two Lords. A CAIN One-Shot I wrote and ran.

THE TRUTH.

Neighbors of the affluent neighborhood of Olivos de Carrascal, in Northern Mexico, have lifted several complaints about the Trafficked Weapons Unit of the metro police. The neighbors allege that the Unit has been unfairly targeting them, and has stolen much cash and valuables while they have been at their raids. No charge has stuck to the Unit, though, and the amount of illegal guns and dirty money they bring to the city is too good for the bosses to slow them down. Nevertheless, the unexplainable theft has approached impossible levels. Entire garages have been emptied. Such was also the case of an Olympic-length pool, with no evidence of a culprit.

At the head of the Unit is Sergeant Adonái, a charismatic and effective officer on the up-and-up after a case that almost disgraced him off the force. Adonái was hot on the trail of popular rapper Doraigon, also a resident of Olivos de Carrascal, who was charged with murder of a rival music producer. Doraigon had long been tied with organized crime, but it was his ties to higher powers that had his case dismissed and Adonái’s career derailed.

The grind of being back in uniform wreaked havoc on Adonái’s mind, in his home, in his pension and in his children’s future. However, an anonymous tip changed his luck, the location of a drug depo nobody could find; a “dunker” of a case. It had been the “Nose”, who’d soon become his legendary Confidential Informant, and the pillar of Adonái’s then new Trafficked Weapons Unit.

With a vengeance, Adonái looted his way to success, feeding his greed as much as he did his desire for justice. Thus the TOAD SIN of the GULLINBURSTI grew, working as the “Nose” of the Unit, turning them into his TOADSPAWN. This would go on until Adonái robbed somebody he shouldn’t have, some politician, and the bosses had enough. Now he’s been set up to be killed while raiding Doraigon, in cahoots with the higher ups. The Exorcists will pass themselves as Federal Police auditing the Unit on the raid and will have to decide what to do with this mess.

What system works weirdly well with a genre it wasn't meant for?

I mean one where you barely have to touch the rules and just give the setting and tone a coat of paint. I ask cause I have been toying with making a Delta Green romcom module. In it, Sanity becomes your Heartbreak stat, and the Horrors of Delta Green are the agonies and mindgames your beloved puts you through to win their heart.

Nourishment for Your Bones. A CAIN One-Shot I wrote and ran.

THE TRUTH.

Hospital San Gerardo, in Northern Mexico, specializes in the treatment of pediatric cancers, especially under the leadership of Dr. Bárbara Stein, who has earned much acclaim for her work, and much ego, and much alcoholism. Her second-in-command has been nurse Gregorio “Goyo” Flores, of a sensitive heart attuned to the children. Nevertheless, that same heart has made him a man uncomfortable with pain, of himself and others', and he has taken to prioritizing the patients’ comfort over all. In fact, on more than one occasion he has taken to directly ending the pain of those children who have suffered the most under his heaving watch, tampering with their chemotherapy. None have been the wiser.

The unexplainable deaths worsen Dr. Stein’s self-esteem and her alcohol dependency, until the arrival of the preteen patient Nana Navarro. Nana had a terrible prognosis for her painful cancer of the esophagus, and so Goyo tries on her his usual ministrations. However, Nana miraculously resists the poisoning and her own torturous cancer for a good while, to the point that she is completely cured of her illness beyond all logic and precedence.

Goyo realizes then that, if Nana survived, maybe any other one of his victims could have too, and so he stops euthanizing. Some cold years pass and Nana reluctantly returns during the anniversary of the hospital, pushed by her mom to thank Dr. Stein for her help, despite Nana never liking the arrogant Doctor and the place she felt so much pain in.

Goyo then sees her again in the lobby, all grown and healed, and heads to a broken elevator of the hospital. He opens up the doors, drunk from Stein’s stash of liquor, and throws himself all the way down to the basement, where Nuclear Medicine lays, where the OGRE SIN of the WHITE DEATH has been festering, ready to irradiate the hospital with Goyo’s shame. The Exorcists have to go from the helipad all the way at the top of the Hospital, locked down by CAIN emitting a terrorist alarm, down to Nuclear Science, where the WHITE DEATH awaits in the elevator shaft.

What is an idea you regret saying "no" to as a GM?

We all have moments like that, where maybe later that player's idea could actually have been really fun if it panned out, but you didn't see it during the session. It's difficult when we're making so many in-the-moment decisions, though. All we can do is have soft eyes for those things.
