This’ll be a pop 1 whenever I bother to grade it. No other signed copies with PSA.

Recently had a friend take several cards to a Pedro Martinez signing, and while some of the others are flashier, this one is my favorite.

1999 was the first year Pedro should have won MVP. It’s also the year the All-Star Game was held at Fenway. Pedro was robbed of the MVP thanks to a couple of NY sports writers who left him off their ballots entirely (out of spite, I’m convinced)… but he did win ASG MVP, striking out five of the six batters he faced as starter:

- Barry Larkin

- Larry Walker

- Sammy Sosa

- Mark McGwire

- (Matt Williams reached on an error, but was caught stealing after Bagwell struck out.)

- Jeff Bagwell

I lived outside of Boston in 1999, and I got to attend the All-Star Fan Fest, though sadly not the game itself. I did see Pedro pitch in person many times in those years, and I never missed a game of his on TV or the radio. He was a special, special player, certainly the greatest I was lucky enough to see.

There are surprisingly few cards that specifically honor Pedro’s dominant performance at that game, at home, during his historic year. This one, by far my favorite of that small group, is a parallel from 1999 Upper Deck MVP which was released at Fenway during All-Star weekend in 1999. The large foil stamp sets it apart from the base set. About 1500 cards per player, give or take; some players were short printed.
