Have been daily driving this since this morning, I wanted say that I'm very positively surprised! Not just because it's one of the lesser expensive mech pens in my latest stationery haul, but rather it's one of the most everyday carry-able mech pens in my entire collection.

When I say the Uni Shift Pipe Lock is "carry-able", I'm not referring just only it's relatively lightweight body, but more so of it's lead sleeve nib protection system. The Pipe Lock system allows for stress-free carrying as a bent/broken lead sleeve is significantly less prone to happen. The Pipe Lock system is analogous to the ones found in upper-end pens, where twisting the body reveals and retracts the tip. However, the Pipe Lock system on the Uni Shift is a bit more complicated that could be described in a 3 step process:

1.) Twist the plastic body counterclockwise (to the right) and the metal knurled grip clock (to the left) simultaneously.

2.) Push the plastic body down till it reaches a couple of millimeters away from the grip.

3.) Finally rotate the metal knurled grip a bit more to lock it in place (there is a satisfying click).

NOTE: the instructions on the sticker were not clear at all!

This process is quite unintuitive at first; however, upon continual usage, it does become quite easy to adapt to. It does make a nice built-in fidget toy; but beware, you will definitely get annoyed looks in the classroom! Upon testing this mechanism, only 3 out of 20 attempts resulted in a temporary jam (85% success rate). Another potential downside on having the Pipe Lock system is that after extended lead sleeve nib, the initial knock is quite coarse, feeling like I have broken something (exactly the type of feeling I got when adjusting the Regulator mechanism in the Staedtler 925 85 REG). These subjectively minor nitpicks could be easily overlooked by it's relatively inexpensive price tag (in comparison to other mech pens with similar features and 2026's Basket of Goods).

Some other things to note is that due to the plastic body and the full-on metal knurled grip, the center of gravity is quite low. This would be much faster writing strokes as there would be lesser force needed to be applied upon writing as the gravitational force would tremendously help out here. This is definitely a great pencil for timed assessments and long-writing sessions. But do note, that the eraser is petite (it's smaller than the one found on the Pilot Birdie in surface area lol). At this point, why bother implementing an eraser? Take a look at the Nocfree Metal...

But all things aside, the Uni Shift Pipe Lock is an amazing pencil and is definitely worthy of consideration for one's everyday carry.

I wish Uni didn't kick it to the curb as sadly it has been retired since 2024 😢. RIP Uni Shift 2008-2024 🫡.

As always, Thank You so much for reading my review, and I hope that you enjoyed it! 🫶

**Please Note: This is just a personalized review solely based on my own experience and is subject to my own thoughts and standing on the mech pen. YMMV.**

Staedtler Hexagonal Collection 05/20/26 Update!

Ever since I laid my eyes on the Staedtler Hexagonals, I knew I wanted to catch them all! Their elegant packaging translates into the mech pen itself, furnishing one of the most minimalistic, yet elegant writing instruments in my collection. With this, the price of obtaining one is simply too high (even for MSRP). However, my collector mindset says otherwise, always in conflict with my wallet 😂. And, the r/mechanicalpencils sub is definitely not helping 😭✌️!

This lengthy quest exemplifies what is considered a "grail mech pen". Is there such a thing? Or, do we instill this ideology based on its price, rarity, or perhaps both? Or, even the journey of finally obtaining something you have been chasing for quite a while? Trying to complete the Staedtler Hexagonal collection demonstrated that the hunt always continues!

Sun-Star Nocfree Metal (Silver)

Model & Make: Bandai Namco Sun-Star Nocfree Metal (Silver)
Features: Automatic Lead AdvancementMetal ChassisRobust ClipUnique Lead Dispensing SystemNO ERASER!?!
Release Date: August 2025
Pricing (MSRP): $10.30 | ¥1,650 | £7.80 | R$53.70 (as of 05/10/26)
Rating: 🅲

Oof, where to begin? How about the fact that the Sun-Star Nocfree Metal doesn't even have a eraser 🤯🤦‍♂️?!? This then begs the question, "what makes a pencil, a pencil?" Well, the answer is having an eraser as (mechanical) pencils are primarily used in academia and professional workplaces that require the ability to erase and redo writings. Although there are some wooden pencils that do not have an eraser built-in (i.e. colored pencils), they simply don't invent new problems and advertise it as an outstanding feature. Ahh yess modernization 🙌🚮.

When I first saw the press release announcement on the Nocfree Metal, I was wondering how did they manage to drill a hole throughout the eraser as the primary feature was the "hassle-free" lead dispensing --> the lead would go through the cap AND eraser. Nope! There is no eraser whatsoever 😭 Surely, I can't be the only one who thought of this idea 🥲.

Moving on, problems continue to arise upon writing. I have quickly noticed that the nib sleeve is quite mobile. This unfortunately entails the user with inconsistent handwriting and strokes. They seriously need to measure this on the Richter Scale because this is not stationary whatsoever 🤣. I suspect this is due to the automatic lead advancement system 🤷‍♂️. I am genuinely re-living my OHTO Horizon experience at this rate 😭😵.

All of the things about the Nocfree Metal aren't totally bad. For one, I do enjoy the minimal aesthetics of the unibody-like design with elegant grip strips. The grip strips have "- - -" patterns on them, indicating where to place your fingers at (very much like the guide strips on a road for a vehicle). The center of gravity (CoG) is at the upper end of the grip stripes, so pretty much an even distribution of weight across the mech pen. The clip is quite robust, unlike the rest of the Nocfree Metal's build quality.

First, the OHTO Horizon. Now, the Nocfree Metal. I am tempted to keep my Pilot Automac sealed. I am truly hoping that the Automac doesn't disappoint me 😭🙏.

Given all this, if you were still going to purchase this mech pen, I advise do so at/near MSRP at your own risk ⚠️.

Notes:
This is my very first time getting Washi Tape, so let's go! It's also my first time trying out a Zento Signature (the packaging looks quite small!); is this pen truly overhyped? There's certainly one way to find out 🫣. I'm excited to put my Traveler's Factory charms to use (esp one of the Mizuhiki for my Card Size TN). It took a while to amass this haul, but it was totally worth it (emotionally, definitely not financially 😭).

Starting off Summer 2026 on a good note! 😁 These are my first Midori Notebooks, and I have to say that I am not disappointed whatsoever! Yayy. I love the silky smooth texture on the pages; this would be great to use with my new pens. What was the "challenging" part of this haul was finding the Midori Notebook Covers as they were OOS practically everywhere, so I had to purchase from Tokyo Pen Shop, and I am super glad to say that my first ever purchase with them is a great success 🥰

Stationery Haul Extravaganza! - Vol. 01

One item to my shopping cart somehow turned into this 🫣

Featured Items:

  • Baronfig x Ali Abdaal Liminal Squire Hex Pen 🖋
  • Uni Jetstream x karimoku 4-in-1 (Steel Blue)
  • Tombow MONO Graph (Transparent White 0.5mm)
  • Luddite Bendy Pen Case (Denim Patchwork)
  • Midori Cutter XS

The Lumos Mini (that I have posted alongside with my Traveler's Notebook Card Size) is my first ever "collector's" pen. I knew about the (fountain) pen rabbithole, and I knowingly hopped into it 😭. Down I go (and my bank account) yippee!

I some sort see the appeal of extragent pens, as the Limital Squire Hex Pen is my most expensive purchase ever for any pen. When will this addiction end??? ahhhh Pray for my wallet ig? 😭🙏

Newbie here! ✌️

Ever since I saw u/doucesquisse's post on implementing the XTEINK's X3 into the Traveler's Notebook Card Size edition, I waited till the AliExpress Summer Ready sales have started.

Although there is an official XTEINK website, I went ahead and purchased the X3 through Aliexpress here. Although I should have done more research on my part tbh, I thought that since there were 5 5-star views and hundreds sold, it should be genuine right?

Furthermore, as I have been lurking around this sub before my purchase and posting this, I came across CrossPoint? What is this? Is it like an user-enhanced software program?

Just one more question, I promise! What are some setup tips & tricks, especially for customization and user accessibility?

Thank you very much 😭🙏

Model & Make: Retro51 Hex-O-Matic (Silver)

Features: All Metal chassisKnurled gripRetractable NibRobust Clip

Release Date: idk

Pricing: MSRP $50 | ¥7,990 | £37.50 | R$258.50 (as of 05/01/2026)

Rating: 🅰

Although I initially didn't find the appeal for the Retro51 Hex-O-Matic, my short writing test session at my local stationery shop quickly changed my mind.

Retro51's Hex-O-Matic comes in either as a ballpoint pen or a mech pen (however in 0.7mm only 😞). This is the biggest drawback of this mech pen as I have geared towards using 0.5mm and even wanting to experiment with smaller lead sizes. As I do a much of scientific writing, problems, and drafting, 0.7mm is not as adequate as 0.5 (or even 0.4, 0.3, and/or 0.2). Moving on, the Hex-O-Matic in Silver resembles the positively-striking elegance of your average r⭕tring 600. However, unlike the r⭕tring 600, the Hex-O-Matic features a retractable lead sleeve nib. Even if there is no special mechanism for retracting the lead sleeve, I am content enough as this is even possible in the first place (begone broken r⭕trings 🫸!). The lead sleeve nib sits pretty much flush with the cone piece. All you have to do is knock (and continue to press down on the eraser cap) and exert a downward force onto a table. Speaking of forces, the CoG is pretty much dead on the center --> pretty much equal weight distribution from the lead sleeve all the way to the eraser cap).

The knurling on the grip isn't too aggressive (definitely less than the 925-35 and a little bit less than the r⭕tring 600), and I found that the metal chassis is one of the nicest and softest metal finishes that I have ever used on a mech pen! As I was writing this review, I just found out that the eraser has a built-in anti-lead jammer! Attention to details is what Retro51 does best as its packaging is like no other. The Hex-O-Matic's packaging literally comes in a hexagonal prism-shaped packaging with blueprint schematics of the mech pen shown off. Kudos to Retro51 for making the unboxing experience elegant!

As previously implied, my only gripe with the Hex-O-Matic is the lack of other lead sizes especially smaller ones (other than its remarkably high price tag of $50 USD MSPR 😭). Otherwise, this was an excellent purchase and addition to my ever-growing collection!

As always, Thank You so much for reading my review, and I hope that you enjoyed it! 🫶

**Please Note: This is just a personalized review solely based on my own experience and is subject to my own thoughts and standing on the mech pen. YMMV.**

Not my typical review post as I am just showing off my two Uni Metal Lead Cases! I honestly thought that my dream of owning a minimalistic matte black lead case. Well, here I am, finally ticking off this checkbox!

Unlike the Uni Metal Lead Case in bare-body Aluminum, the Uni Metal Lead in Black LE has a pronounced matte finish, providing an even more luxurious look and feel. However, this does not go to say the black lead case is a literal fingerprint magnet 😵! Like you can even tell by the images that I shown off from this post that it does in fact acquire much more particles and is consequentially more difficult in maintaining its original condition. Other than that, it surely makes one heck of a fidget toy though!
