It's All About that Neck (Today's Attempt)

My tsukesage actually fits me, so I decided to practice with it today. My focus was on a clean ohashori and showing an good amount of neck, which I have been struggling with (possibly because I am not wrapping my nagajuban quite correctly? the eri should be going into my armpits right?)

Today's attempt features:

  • Baby's first erishin (I finally ordered one)
  • Kimono clips (ditto)
  • An incomplete otaiko (I injured my shoulder and it's stiff today, and also I'm just SO HUNGRY my patience ran out)
  • No scandalous ankles or wrists (mostly) (ok fine there's a little bit of wrist)!
  • Some neck! Giraffes beware!

One observation: I thought my nagajuban sleeves were too long in the back, because they stick out of the back of the kimono sleeves at the beginning, but by the end, they are totally fine! Wild how the size accounts for all that folding and tying.

Any observations/advice would be welcome, aside from, you know, finish the otaiko next time. We must choose our battles. What is an unfinished otaiko if not the state of our human souls on the path to nirvana.

PS: I know this kimono desperately needs to be steamed.

Tailored Kimono - Advice needed

Hello, all! I am looking to get a tailored kimono from Yamato before I leave Japan for New York City, where I hope to continue the kimono hobby through occasional daily wear and stay connected to Japan through kitsuke classes. I really like vintage kimono, but I want a properly me-sized kimono to learn with and to use to compare/measure vintage pieces against.

I am going to Yamato specifically because 1) there is a store front in my small Tohoku city, and 2) I want to be able to get measured in person. Overall, I'm looking to spend between 4~5万円.

I am a bit torn on what kind of kimono to get. If you all have any thoughts or advice, I would deeply appreciate it; e.g., is there a better place I could go to? Is there some secret way I could manage to get a custom silk kimono for this budget? Can you negotiate price with the kimono shop? Is there something I'm not considering?

Option 1: Polyester awase. This will be functional in a wide range of formalities, but hot. I imagine I will probably not be able to wear it quite as much. (I hate being hot.)

Option 2: Polyester hitoe. I will probably get more wear out of this, given trends in global warming and all.... Would it really matter in all but the most formal contexts (e.g., weddings) if it's unlined?

Option 3: Cotton hitoe. This would be the coolest option, I imagine, but I would definitely not be able to wear outside of casual contexts.

I appreciate your thoughts and advice in advance!!!

Today's attempt (Time Trial Edition)

Warning: Ankles (gasp)

Today, I had a vision and a bedtime, so I set a timer and raced to get this on in a normal amount of time instead of fussing over the ohashori for 2 hours and falling into a depression. The result: A colorful mess!

A friend chose this kimono for me, and I never would have chosen it for myself, but I absolutely adore it despite the fact it's definitely too short lol. BUT it is a perfect chance to show off a pair of sparkly pink shoes I have...

I was considering a pink obijime, but the green called to me.

The kimono continue to win, but they don't know that I play Sekiro and I love dying repeatedly to the same boss battle over and over.

Today's Fabric Battle (着付け) Me: 0 Kimono: 1

Today's unseasonal kitsuke brought to you by earthquake notifications. Featuring: A lumpy ohashori! Too-short sleeves! A too-short obi! An uncooperative erisaki! And more! Since this obi is too short to show the design when I do otaiko, I attempted a 角出し帯, but no tsuno's are dashi-ing!!! WOO!

I am slowly learning how to negotiate the fabric into place. This is a vintage dark purple tsumugi with momiji leaf design. I'm hoping to go to Yamato and buy a custom made cotton kimono before I leave Japan in August so I can learn without fighting geometry/my hips quite so much.
