CMV: Being witness to a crime (legal, or ethical) does NOT make one "just as guilty"
I recently saw this posted:
When we see someone hurting someone else or about to hurt someone else, we have the duty to stop or prevent it to the best of our ability. When we don’t, we are just as guilty.
I'd heard this kind of rhetoric and position before, but seeing it recently, I felt the need to comment "I disagree extremely strongly that we are JUST as guilty. Perhaps there can be some guilt, but in the vast majority of cases it cannot be the same amount as the actual perpetrator." The backlash was huge. All replies are defending the OP and saying I am wrong: that is, they are saying that witnessing and not doing anything DOES make you just as guilty.
Now, I am not even arguing that one isn't guilty of something by witnessing and not acting, only that one cannot be just as guilty as a general rule. There may be some exceptions thereto, but not as a general rule and philosophy.
