Been having issues with this strange 80s P bass, anyone know how to fix it?
So what I have here is an ~80s P bass, likely a copy of a Precision Special or a modified standard. The 3 knobs are (from left to right) Volume, a mod, and Tone. Yeah, a passive P bass with 3 knobs… I too am confused. All pots say B500K on them.
When it was working fine, I was able to turn the middle knob all the way down and get a typical P bass sound. When I turned it up, it would sound like the bass had gain added to it and it would get a harsher sound with a sort of clang to it that would produce more amp noise and feedback, so I’m guessing it’s a knob that cuts bass somehow?
Anyway, the volume knob stopped working. I included a photo of a red wire that snapped off. It now only makes noise when I have the middle knob on.
Anyway I wanted to know if anyone had any info as to what the knob is, and more importantly how I would go about rewiring the bass to get it working properly again. Im not new too new to this kind of stuff but I’m nowhere near expert level. I’m honestly fine with just cutting the middle knob if I have to redo all the wiring, it’s very old and I’d rather have updated cleaner electronics than a mysterious knob, but I have 2 pickguards that fit this modified layout so keeping it would be fine as well.
Any help is appreciated, thanks!
The second pic is where the red wire snapped off the volume pot, and the third pic is a side view of the wiring.
