UK Product Designer Trying to Relocate to China - TEFL First or Apply from Abroad?

Hi all,

So I am from the UK and trying to relocate to China - probably Shenzhen or Shanghai as I don’t speak any mandarin - I also love Hong Kong but I feel like the cost of living there would make it hard to live comfortably.

For context I am a product designer and have tried applying to jobs from abroad but it seems most require mandarin, and the ones which don’t are rare to find - convert from abroad. So I’ve been thinking to perhaps move there with a TEFL job to teach English in order to get the visa, and once I’m there - look for jobs in my actual field. Does anyone know if it’s easier to find a job that way and transfer visas rather just applying to Design jobs from abroad?

I would also appreciate any advice for someone hoping to relocate from the UK to China in general.

Many thanks in advance!

Can my employer dodge my notice pay because I resigned?

Hi all, quick question - if my contract states that I have a one-month notice period, both if I resign or if I’m laid off, does that mean I’m guaranteed to be paid for that one-month notice period if I resign?

Or can the employer choose to end my employment immediately and not pay the notice period because I was the one who resigned?

Where to stay in September?

Hello all! I'm thinking of coming to Sri Lanka for a month in September.

My main goals are to relax (beaches, snorkelling, etc.), have good WiFi so I can work remotely, and still have some sort of social life in the evenings. I'm not looking for clubbing - just nice restaurants and bars where it's easy to meet people, but ideally somewhere that's not too overcrowded, as the whole point of the trip is to rest after a stressful year of work.

la love any recommendations on where to stay, and whether September is a good month to visit.

Thanks in advance!

September, October or November?

Hi all, if you had to choose between staying 1 month in September, October or November which would you choose?

My main priorities are warm weather and beach days/snorkelling!

Thanks in advance!

Visa Extension

Hi all, my tourist visa expires tomorrow. I need to stay another month here - should I apply for an extension or just pay the fine when I leave? Does anyone have experience with this?

If I need to extend, which website do I do it through?

Thanks!

UAE cheque situation - risk of travel ban / re-entry issues?

Hi all, need urgent help:

We terminated our rent tenancy early, and although the landlord has been helpful, the remaining post-dated cheques were cancelled very late. As a result, the cheque due today may not have been stopped in time. We currently do not have the funds to cover it, and it should have been cancelled back in March when the tenancy ended.

We are now outside the country and trying to resolve it urgently, but I’m concerned about potential legal or immigration implications as we’re due to return in the next couple of weeks.

If a cheque bounces in the UAE:
- Could it affect re-entry into the country?
- Is there a risk of a travel ban if we return?

The bank has advised that if it bounces it will incur a AED105 penalty, then be returned to the landlord after 14 days, who could then return it to us. But I’m worried about what happens beyond that and whether this cheque bouncing could escalate legally.

Any insight from people who’ve dealt with similar situations would be really appreciated.

Hi everyone, I’d really appreciate some guidance on the process of moving out of an apartment in Dubai. I want to make sure I handle everything properly and avoid any issues.

In particular, I’m unsure about the steps for closing or transferring utilities like DEWA and Empower, as well as anything else I should be aware of (final bills, deposits, notice periods, inspections, etc.). I haven’t been through this before, so any tips, checklists, or things to watch out for would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance!
