How many Americans live in Shenzhen?

Seems like Americans moved out, most foreigners I saw were from Middle East, India, Africans and Russians.

If so, that’s really a bad news.

Luohu Commercial City - Eye glasses

Think there’s already been a few posts on this topic recently but heading to Luohu Commercial City tomorrow and want to pick up a few pairs or prescription glasses.

Can anyone recommend a reliable shop? Maybe share a contact?

My prescription is around -5.50 with astigmatism, surely these can be made in a hour or so right? Only planning to stay for a few hours up to half a day.

Thanks in advance!

Kilt Hire

I’m get married in Xiamen in October, but will be flying in and out of Shenzhen.

I’d like to wear a kilt. I’m thinking of buying one and taking it with me, but then I’d have to carry it around china for four weeks.

Is it possible to rent one in Shenzhen? Or Xiamen?

Newcomer to Shenzhen - give me your tips pls!

Hello everyone, I’ll be moving to Shenzhen for work and staying in Shekou. I’ve been to China a couple of times but never to Shenzhen.

I welcome any tips and recommendations you have and also any day trip itineraries to get myself familiar with living in the city. Restaurants, pubs, expat areas etc.

One burning question I have is when would you choose HK airport over Bao’an for trips.

Also keen to know of any meet-ups for English speakers .

Thanks

What shall I do ? Got fraud pendrive at Huaqiang

So I wanted to copy and paste some of my pictures into another device, I went to buy a pendrive at the Huaqiang, this shop looked promising and the price was within my budget, I bought a 64 gb pendrive for 30 Rmb Alipay the payment and the brand was Sandisk, but it was a copy, when I copy paste the data into pendrive it accepts but when I try to copy and paste the data out from pendrive the files get courpted, from a quick search online I even format the pendrive but still the same problem, so shall I go comfort the shop owner tomorrow or take is as a lesson? What do you guys suggest (p.s I am not a local, I am a foreigner here)

General all-rounded medical check up

Visiting SZ soon and I'm thinking of doing a comprehensive health check up since that stuff is generally processed a lot faster and efficient than New Zealand (where I live). Ideally including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, basic cancer screening, heart/metabolic health etc

Does anyone have any recommendations for foreigners and if so what the pricing was like? And how long did results typically take to come out?

Which Gaming Laptop to buy from shenzhen.

I'm going to China, Shenzhen next week and will be staying for about a month. I'm planning to buy a gaming laptop while I'm there, with a budget of around 6,000 RMB.

I'll mainly use it for CAD software like SolidWorks and ANSYS, and I'll also do some casual gaming from time to time.

Can you recommend some specific new laptop models that fit my budget? I'm from Pakistan, and there aren't many good laptop options available here, so I'd like to make the most of my trip.

Looking for recommendations

Hi everyone! I’m a 29F from the Philippines staying in Bao’an District, Shenzhen for work.

I just want to chill a bit, have a drink, and experience the local bar scene. I’m looking for a nearby bar (walkable, no taxi or metro) where I can have some beer or cocktails/ladies’ drinks. Something chill, safe, and foreigner-friendly would be great.

Any recommendations? Thanks!

Found some strange things during rental contract in China, please check if it's legit 🙏

I'm Korean. I was in Shenzhen (Longgang) for a week recently and found an apartment I want to rent.

  • Monthly rent: ¥8200
  • Deposit (押金): 2 months = ¥16,400
  • I paid ¥2000 to the agent as a "holding fee" to reserve the unit until I come back.
  • I am currently back in Korea and will return to Shenzhen on July 20 to sign the formal contract.
  • I already viewed the unit in person and decided to rent it.

Strange things I noticed:

  1. The agent gave me a business card from Leyoujia (乐有家), but later told me he actually works for Beike (贝壳) or another company. (Different company names)
  2. I received a handwritten receipt for the ¥2000, but there is NO company stamp (公章) on it – only his personal signature.
  3. The landlord is a young woman, but she said it's actually her husband's house (husband born in 1996). On July 20, the husband will come to sign the contract, not the wife.
  4. I've seen photos of the landlord's ID and Property Ownership Certificate (房产证), but I haven't seen the original documents yet.

My questions:

Are these things normal in China? Is there anything I should be worried about? Especially:

  • The agent's company changing (Leyoujia → Beike)
  • No company stamp on the receipt
  • The husband signing instead of the wife (who is the contact person)

I just want to make sure everything is legit before I sign on July 20. Any advice would be really helpful! Thanks 🙏

Shenzhen feels like a completely different digital ecosystem

I am looking what it would take to make one of our products available in China,Shenzhen per say . From the outside, it looks like one of the best places to build or expand a tech business, but the deeper I go, the more it feels like an entirely different digital world.

I thought the process would be similar to launching in any other country. Translate the product, improve website performance, set up local marketing. Instead, I've found myself reading about WeChat Mini Programs, Official Accounts, local cloud providers, ICP filings, different app stores, payment platforms, and regulations that I've never had to think about before.

Also many of the tools and platforms we rely on every day don't seem to play the same role in China. It feels like businesses have to rethink not only their technical setup but also how customers discover products, interact with brands, and even complete simple tasks that would normally happen through a website or mobile app.

The more I research, the more I realize that success there isn't just about translating your product into Chinese. It seems like understanding the local digital ecosystem is just as important as the product itself.

It's been a fascinating learning experience so far, and I have a much greater appreciation for how unique Shenzhen's tech ecosystem has become compared to almost anywhere else.
