Gemini 3.7 Flash is surprisingly good

I've been a Claude guy for creative writing for several years, and it seems like it's just gotten worse and worse as time has passed. Although its ability to follow instructions has improved, the actual prose quality has degraded.

I've heard good things about Gemini, and I haven't tested it in quite a while for creative writing. On a lark, I tried out Gemini 3.7 Flash.

I'm kind of shocked to say that I was impressed, and I like the output of it more than the current 3.1 Pro outputs.

Not many people are talking about it for creative writing, but that may just be because it's the least likely suspect.

I'd be interested to have other people mess around with it and see what they think.

14.3.7 first drive = flawless

It was only 40 miles, but I’m familiar with it and it’s normally tricky.

I was very impressed by the smoothness, confidence, lane choices, speed profiles, and had zero regressions. I used Hurry mostly, some Standard.

It’s early and people’s experiences vary based on factors like location and speed profile, but for my two cents, this is the best initial drive I’ve had in a new version yet.

MCT oil = the tits

Wish I had discovered this stuff sooner. Been using KetoneAid, which is still my favorite if I need to get hardcore, but it's pricey. MCT oil works pretty darn well, but much cheaper and tastes way better.

I originally stopped using it because it was upsetting my stomach, but eventually went back to try it again and got through that issue, and I'm glad I did. It really is a nice go to for mental clarity, plus (and this may not be true for everyone) it oddly helps with appetite and sugar cravings a bit.

For those curious, I bought the Pure C8 MCT oil that comes in a glass bottle.

Maybe my imagination re: 14.3.6

It seems like every time I've had a meaningful mistake made by the car, I've been in standard mode (not hurry or chill or Mad Max).

When I'm in other modes, it seems to operate as expected. The one that seems to have all the weird stutters, confusion, and critical mistakes is standard mode, but maybe it's just my imagination.

And I likely switch modes more than most drivers, but it's just something that seems to be true with this newest version.

First critical on v14 in 10k miles during initial 14.3.6 drive

Good reminder for me to stay vigilant. It’s easy to become complacent when v14 has gotten to good.

It just seemed to freeze when it noticed the car coming fast.

To be fair, I was looking and barely saw the car a split second earlier, so just good example of needing to really be careful when pulling out when there’s an obstruction.

My first “FSD saved me” moment

The video won't do this justice because it was actually a terrifying moment for me and my son while driving.

The car saw what was happening. Because it was happening off to my right and behind me, I didn't know that the truck was going to make that maneuver. My car was already pulled off to the shoulder in an evasive maneuver before I even realized what was causing it. If it hadn't done that, when it did, there's no doubt we would have been hit.

It was a much scarier moment than the video is gonna make it feel like, but I included all three angles so you could see what was actually happening.

Perfect example of the weak-ass lane changes that make me wanna scream

This total sequence was closer to 30 straight seconds of me sitting there wondering how big a pussy my car was going to be, and it did not disappoint.

I provided both camera angles so that you could see the gap it had available the entire time.

And for those wondering, this was in hurry mode.

Edit: Well, thanks to the wonderful responses, it allows me the opportunity to rip the band-aid and be done with this sub. if we're at a point where we can't complain about something as obvious as FSD's unwillingness to change lanes when it should, even though it's on video and I'm sitting there with a blinker on for 30 straight seconds, we're clearly living in two different realities at that point. To suggest that it is starting to change lanes in the scenario where I showed the massive gap between those cars and labeled that as "aggressive lane changing" shows that this sub is bordering on either sycophantic or delusional, or both.

It's an amazing technology, and I'm a 99-percenter. That doesn't mean I can't point out when something isn't operating the way the user would want. Maybe I'm the only one suffering from this problem intermittently.

Either way, regardless of why I'm misaligned with this community, I'm out because of that misalignment. Have a good one.

Mad Max aggressiveness with Standard speeds

This would be my holy grail for FSD. I get that everyone is different.

I use Mad Max and Hurry most frequently because of the more aggressive lane changes, stop signs, yellow lights, etc.

However, I often find the speed to be a tad over my preference and the “increased attention” to be an annoyance.

I wish I could have MM have a baby with Standard. That would be an amazing offspring.

Don’t feel like quiet BPD gets much attention on this sub

Maybe I’m just not seeing it or my perspective is skewed, but as someone that was married to someone with quiet BPD for 20+ years, I feel like I don’t belong here because it didn’t turn outward in the typical BPD fashion until the very end of the marriage.

The quiet BPD experience is harder to spot, more insidious in many ways, and can cause serious developmental trauma because they don’t give off the more obvious signs that they have a personality disorder. I feel like it’s BPD wearing camouflage.

Anyway, shout out to fellow survivors of having a Quiet BPD partner.

Pulling into your home’s garage shouldn’t break an FSD streak.

I understand streaks breaking for the vast majority of reasons that they do, but when the car is incapable of pulling into my garage, it's a guarantee that every streak that I have is broken as soon as I go home. It kind of corrupts the data to a degree.

I wish they would just exempt your home from a streak break.

Meeting her favorite author for first time

My partner got the chance to meet Matt Dinniman, author the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, and she was overwhelmed by the opportunity to tell him how much his books meant to her. Love watching it go well when someone gets to meet their hero.

Anyone seen 14.3.2 stop at a stop sign, indefinitely?

I ended up having to hit the accelerator after waiting long enough to know it wasn’t budging. No cars on either side. No discernible reason for it to wait. Odd aberration.

Never seen such disparate feedback as w/ 14.3.2

I just got the update two days ago, just in time for my 4hr trip from Austin to Galveston. Personally I was shocked by how good it was. All the feedback from the positive reviews held: less tailgating, better speed profiles, more confidence and decisiveness, better more sentient feel, etc.

My only real issue with it was related to navigation, which seems to have regressed, even though I’m not entirely sure how that’s possible. The parking lots and parking are also worse.

It’s just wild to read so many sour reviews. I think the regressions are minor and the progressions are major, so overall it is a major improvement. I get people have different expectations and experiences, so I’m not saying it’s a great update period, but rather I’m in the fortunate “it’s a great update for me” club.

I feel bad for those that have had a net negative experience so far. I’ve just never seen an update so oddly split. People usually just love or hate an update more uniformly. This one is so polarized.
