
Erg Chigaga vs Erg Chebbi: how should you actually choose?
I often see travelers asking which of Morocco’s two best-known desert regions is “better.” Having worked in Moroccan tourism for many years, I don’t think that is the most useful way to compare them.
Erg Chebbi is beside Merzouga, so the dunes are relatively straightforward to access. It also fits naturally into routes between Marrakech and Fes through places such as Skoura, Dades, Todra and the Middle Atlas.
Erg Chigaga is reached through the Draa Valley and M’Hamid, followed by a longer 4x4 journey. It can work particularly well in southern routes involving Zagora, Lake Iriki, Foum Zguid and Taznakht.
One is not automatically more authentic or more beautiful than the other. The best choice depends on the rest of your itinerary, how much time you have and whether you want the off-road approach to be a substantial part of the experience.
