On Alpine 3.24, can sudo be replaced with doas-sudo-shim after Pi-Hole is installed?

I'm currently running Alpine 3.24 on a headless mini PC for Pi-Hole, which I've installed using the native install script, and I'm wondering if I can uninstall sudo and replace it with doas-sudo-shim.

Pi-Hole's installer made me install sudo even though I already had doas, and I don't see the point of keeping sudo installed if I don't need it. From what I understand, doas is more secure and has a smaller attack surface.

EDIT: I'm aware that doas doesn't do everything that sudo does, so I'm trying to figure out if Pi-Hole uses any features in sudo that aren't covered by doas.

Do any PAL games play full-screen/full-speed when you run them on an NTSC console, assuming you have a slot adapter and a way to deal with the lockout?

I'm in Canada, and I feel like this could be a clever "hack" to get cheaper games, since PAL versions are seen as inferior by a lot of players.

I know a lot of PAL games were never properly optimized for PAL, so if you had some way of running them on an NTSC console, would this run them at proper 60hz speed with a non-letterboxed picture?

Looking for a Twitter/Bluesky/Tumblr alternative with less political BS and drama

I know this is /r/RedditAlternatives, but I feel like I might be able to find some answers here.

In any case, I'm looking for a site where I can blurt random thoughts, follow developments in the retro gaming scene (and possibly Linux, if it's not too toxic), and follow artists as well.

It should have a good mobile app/site; which all three of the sites I've named fail at, and good filtering features as well, so that I can mute keywords relating to things I'm not interested in hearing about.

If it's a small community that supports reposts from bigger sites, I think I'd like that.

Do they make cartridge passthrough adapters for the Super Famicom that include all the pins needed for expansion chip games?

I haven't owned an SNES of any type in forever, and I've considered getting a Super Famicom instead of trying to hunt down another North American SNES.

All of the games I currently own are NA SNES carts, and that includes a copy of Star Fox. Obviously, you can't play Star Fox without the expansion chip pins, so that's why I'm wondering if passthrough adapters with those pins exist.

EDIT: Looks like they do. 😄

Is there a clean way to prevent KRunner from launching on Plasma 6.7.2 when I type at the desktop, other than renaming the executable?

KRunner used to have a setting labelled "Activate when pressing any key on the desktop" that you could disable, but that option's gone now. It's frustrating, because I'm prone to accidentally pressing keys on my keyboard and launching it.

I've already tried editing ~/.config/krunnerrc and adding the line ActivateOnDesktop=false, but that didn't fix it. The old ActivateWhenTypingOnDesktop=false preference doesn't do anything either.

I considered removing the krunner package, since I don't actually use it, but I can't do that without removing kdeplasma-addons, milou, plasma-desktop, plasma-workspace, and systemsettings.

I ended up renaming the /usr/bin/krunner executable, and it "solved" my problem, but this is obviously not a long-term solution.

EDIT: If anyone stumbles across this, systemctl --user mask plasma-krunner.service disables KRunner. It works with /usr/bin/krunner being under its original filename too.

An alternative to r/DoesAnybodyElse where you're allowed to post opinions and complaints

The official rules there don't allow opinion posts, and I've had a number of posts removed there in the past for using words like "annoyed" (e.g. "IAE annoyed by X thing") and "hate" (e.g. "DAE hate it when") in the title.

r/DAE used to be the better sub, but it effectively closed back in January when it restricted submissions.

QUIT SUGGESTING ME "BETTER" SUBS, REDDIT.

I mostly use Old Reddit, but every so often I switch over to the New Reddit interface to access some missing features, and one of the most annoying "features" that's rolled out lately is that it'll suggest "better" communities for you to submit your posts to.

This feature has never once given me any worthwhile suggestions. Either it suggests subs I've already thought about and/or posted to, or it just suggests crap.

A relaxed casual gaming sub that's not restricted, not focused on multiplayer meetups, and not /r/patientgamers, /r/gaming, or /r/truegaming. Maybe with an emphasis on retro and indie games?

A tool for finding subreddits that can filter out private/restricted subs

I've been trying to find some new subreddits lately, and the search tools built into Reddit frustrate me because it feels like 95% of the results that interest me are for subs that restricted submissions during the 2023 API protests and never opened back up.

As some of you are probably aware by now, large subs tend to be terrible, so I try to focus on finding smaller, more niche subs. These, of course, are harder to find.

I already know about r/findareddit and r/findasubreddit, but these subs are rarely helpful for me.

EDIT: I got Perplexity to whip up a userscript for Old Reddit's subreddit search that hides restricted subs. It seems to work for private subs too, even though I didn't specifically point Perplexity at the UI element for that:

// ==UserScript==
// @name         Old Reddit - Hide restricted/private subreddits
// @namespace    https://example.com/
// @version      1.0
// @description Removes subreddit rows on old Reddit if they are marked restricted or private.
// @match        https://old.reddit.com/subreddits*
// @match        https://old.reddit.com/subreddits/search*
// @match        https://old.reddit.com/*search*
// @run-at       document-end
// @grant        none
// ==/UserScript==

(function () {
  'use strict';

  const iconSelector = '.sr-type-icon-restricted, .sr-type-icon-private';
  const rowSelector = '.thing[data-type="subreddit"]';

  function hideMatchingRows(root = document) {
    root.querySelectorAll(rowSelector).forEach(row => {
      if (row.querySelector(iconSelector)) {
        row.style.display = 'none';
      }
    });
  }

  hideMatchingRows();

  const observer = new MutationObserver(() => hideMatchingRows());
  observer.observe(document.body, { childList: true, subtree: true });
})();

EndeavourOS should put packages like Nvidia's legacy drivers and Librewolf in its repo (or maybe an optional secondary repo) so that people won't have to depend on the AUR as much.

Along with lessening people's dependence on the AUR, this would also make it easier to update from a chroot, which would be particularly beneficial for Nvidia users.

Years ago, I had a 1050ti that I was using AUR drivers for, and reinstalling those drivers whenever there was a major update was a headache. (EDIT: I'm pretty sure this was on Manjaro, but the principle still applies.)

A subreddit (or maybe a forum?) similar to r/patientgamers, but more informal and with fewer rules

The main rules I take issue with on that subreddit are:

  • Rule 2: "Posts must promote discussion" (tl;dr is they have a minimum character limit)

  • Rule 4: "Posts may not request recommendations or therapy" (gaming-related mental health posts are one of the main things I'm interested in, and I'd also like to be able to ask for recommendations)

  • Rule 7: "Avoid clickbait titles or frequent topics" (some of the disallowed topics include comfort games and game difficulty, while "hidden gem" posts count as "clickbait")

I've been looking for a good alternative to this sub for a few years now. They used to be better up until a few years ago.

I've already posted about this in a couple other places, but I figured I'd try here as well.

Why's it so hard to find good subreddits?

I barely post to Reddit anymore because most subreddits just SUCK, and finding alternatives is way harder than it needs to be. It doesn't help that a lot of subs are still locked or restricted from the 2023 API protests.

If you're wondering why I think most subreddits suck, I can pretty much sum it up as overzealous moderation, asinine rules, and toxic, snarky, unhelpful users.

Helpful users can be found here, but it's like digging for a needle in a haystack.

A subreddit for people who dislike modern trends in gaming like microtransactions, streamer culture, and e-sports, but also dislike hardcore "git gud" attitudes

I guess I'm looking for a sub for people who dislike how "serious" gaming has become.

I believe video games should just be fun and not filled with FOMO bullshit, and that a lot of people take gaming way too seriously these days.

EDIT: not looking for /r/truegaming or /r/patientgamers
