Here are some wargaming topics I have come across over the last week or so. Decided to group them all into one post.

Black Death City (dubbed Mordheim 2.0)

I never got the pleasure of ever experiencing Mordheim (which sucks because the game looks extremely fun!). But I saw that ex-Warhammer designer Sam Pearson, who was the lead designer of Warcry & Spearhead is dropping his own skirmish game Black Death City. 1.0 is out for FREE and is being compared favorably to Mordheim. Right now, the rules are pretty bare-bones but hey FREE is FREE.

For those who are experienced Mordheim players maybe you can give us a better idea of how it compares?

Some highlights of the game system:

  • Alternate Activations (with smaller "Warbands" activating their models multiple times)
  • Less stat-heavy than games like Necromunda or Warhammer 40K
  • No "out of action" (I think?) just reduced activations when models are injured
  • Both players allocate dice rolls during melee combat choosing how to use those dice tactically

GW dropped Oath Fulfilled (see pic below), their miniature to commemorate Warhammer Day which is expected to be in late October.

You have probably seen this model being posted around the internet, but I decided to throw in my 2 cents. I think the model is perfectly fine. Nothing insanely amazing or particularly notable in my opinion, but as an alternative leader for your Slaves to Darkness army it does add a bit of visual diversity which could be cool.

Not one I would personally seek out as a secondhand purchase if you can't get one at a Warhammer store near you.

This article did give me an idea to maybe do an analysis on the second prices of Warhammer day miniatures over the years.

Official King of The Colosseum Rules & Website

I have talked about Poorhammer's horde variant game mode in the past. The other popular unofficial 40K game mode is King of The Colosseum which is a direct replacement for Combat Patrol (low point games with limitations on the units you can field).

I have never played it, but I know it's popular and have heard of multiple tournaments being held for it. The game mode was in limbo after the release of 11th edition, but Play On Tabletop (creators of the mode) recently released updated rules.

Worth checking out if you enjoy the idea of Combat Patrol but want something a bit different and a little more interesting. It's also a FREE update, and the game mode seems pretty easy to run at your local club with little extra investment required.

What is your opinion of Warhammer Tone Pro after trying it?

If you aren't aware, there has been a massive push to get all hobbyists to try out the new Warhammer Pro Paint range. In my local area there are at least 3 stores having demo days coming up for these paints.

For those who have tried them what is your opinion?

I have heard reviews from both sides positive and negative. Some people say it's the best thing ever and that they will never return to the existing Citadel paint range while others have called it overpriced and not worth the hype.

For those who haven't tried them (myself included) educate us on the pros and cons of the new range. If you can confirm your local prices even better!

Must Buy Miniature Gaming & Wargaming Accessories on Etsy

In my opinion, Etsy embodies both the best and worst aspects of miniature & wargaming. There is a bunch of overpriced trash and a ton of high-quality accessories that can make table top gaming better.

I want to hear about all the amazing stuff you have found on Etsy that you think is worth the purchase. I have a list of a few things that have really changed my gaming experience. I am not affiliated with any of these Etsy products/vendors.

1. Tabletop Goodies - Blood Bowl Bases & Skill System

The best purchase I ever made on Etsy. If you don't play Blood Bowl when a player gains experience and gets new skills you are expected to show them to your opponent clearly usually by using a colored band (Blue for Block, Green for Guard, etc.) or some other easy-to-see indicator.

This vendor created a magnetized base and skill system where you have a base with a player number (really nice for easy tracking of kills and touchdowns) and little flags that you insert between the base and magnetic bottom. These flags tell your opponent what additional skills the player has. This has replaced bands and made it much easier to explain my skills to my opponent and track kills and touchdowns over an entire season. 100% recommended.

2. Necromunda Tokens & Templates

No link because the seller no longer sells through Etsy and I couldn't find them online :(. The vendor was ForgeFabricationCo.

All together it was $40 for around 40 ish tokens and templates. It was not the cheapest, but the token quality was amazing. They were super easy to distinguish between the different status effects and as a new player these were great for learning the game. Since our (sadly short) campaign was full of new players, I shared these with everyone and they were a big hit. A lot of players ended up buying some after they used mine.

There are probably alternatives on Etsy right now that could help you if you have started the new edition. I am a big believer in getting nice plastic tokens especially for game systems that utilize different status effects.

3. Movement Trays

These are the ones I bought when I had a more limited budget because they were pretty cheap and had good reviews.

These lasted for a couple of years. I was playing Orks a lot so these got a ton of use and wear. Eventually bought some really nice ones (not on Etsy), but I still have these as backups and they are still in one piece. Still a really nice choice even if they are a bit more expensive than when I bought them.

4. Upgrades!

I bought a friend an all-in-one Kill Team Game Tracker + Token Holder. He loved it. He is the type to have all his tokens spilled out everywhere so this was made for him. Also, it helps keeps his opponents sane during the match lol.

Moving away from just miniature gaming, I have also found some amazing upgrades for board games like Terraforming Mars on Etsy.

In general specialized 3D printed bits for specific hobby projects are also good buys from Etsy. There is a lot of variety and themes to choose from to take your project to the next level. No specific vendor I particularly love, but in general its not a bad place for finding a specific thematic bit.

*I have also bought some Blood Bowl models from Etsy, but resin usually disappoints me in terms of long-term durability. The print quality and detail were pretty strong overall for the ones I bought though.

Big Autumn Preview Warhammer Tone Pro - Pricing has been calculated

Sometimes reading terms and conditions is worth the time and effort. OP found out that GW is doing a prize draw for a set of Warhammer Tone Pro Paints on GW's website so they reported the price of the set.

In the terms and conditions GW has to legally put the value of their prize and he calculated it being £4.13 for each pot. So a set of 5 would be £20.65. In USD (as of today) it equates to around $5.52 per pot. I don't know much about the Tone Pro paints (aside from GW marketing hype), so whether that is a good price compared to Army Painter or equivalent I don't know. However, the info is interesting especially if your budgeting or thinking about acquiring these paint when they release. I know from talking to local shops they plan to put onto shelves ASAP.

In his thread you can find the link to the terms and conditions for the drawing if your interested in reading it yourself. Throw the post a thumbs up, I thought it was pretty interesting he was able to find that so quickly after the reveal.

“Free”/Discounted Ways to Read Warhammer Books

Hi all,

I am working on a fun totally unnecessary article/blog on how many Warhammer books can you theoretically read for $0 or $X. Still work shopping the title of the article. The idea is to help new people to the universe find inexpensive ways to read up on lore without having to drop $15-$20 per book.

What are ways you found to read Warhammer novels for very cheap/free?

I wanted to avoid Argh! (If you know what I mean) & used books as answers.

My current channels:

- Libby/Hoopla (apps that show local library options)
- Abusing free trials for places like Audible
- resubscribing to audible when they sent you those $0.99 for 3 month deals
- Humble Bundle - Warhammer books
- Audible/Kindle Sales

Warhammer Autumn Preview - What Are You Excited for? + UK Independent Events Calendar

Hi all,

The Warhammer Autumn Preview has been announced for this Friday. I typically don't post about these previews (the typical new Space Marine doesn't really excite me personally lol), but this one looks super interesting.

Two releases really excite me:

  • A new AoS faction called the Khazalites Holds, which is a new Dwarf faction. The character they showed off looks very cool (see pic below), and I think GW creating another Dwarf faction is very bold, considering Dwarf factions haven't been the most popular archetype in Warhammer as of today. Hopefully, they get some range support early on and the models are awesome.
  • A New Blood Bowl Team - I am super excited to see what GW cooks up. Since they have already refreshed the Teams of Legend they have complete freedom to go as wacky as they want. Personally, I am hoping for Squigs or a Chaos faction (preferably Tzeentch). Give me the wackiest team ever.

Other announced releases include a new Kill Team, more minis for The Old World, and "stuff" for Horus Heresy, Necromunda, Warhammer+, and Warhammer Quest.

What are you excited for or expecting from the preview?

u/Hellstorm-Wargaming has built a website to find local 40K events in the UK. In just 2 months they have posted 100 40K events and have seen 80,000 visitors to their site which is incredible success. It personally motivates me to continue what I am doing. They have been putting a ton of work into this and are looking to expand to other miniature games.

I don't live in the UK, but this looks like a great resource if you like attending events especially for 40K. Check out the thread and maybe give them some feedback if you find this interesting. Its also completely free!

Discussion: What older Warhammer models (that has been replaced by a newer sculpt) is still worth purchasing?

I haven't done a discussion post in a while and thought of this philosophical question while window shopping for a Daemon army.

What older Warhammer models that have been replaced by a newer sculpt would you still purchase today?

It could be because the older kit had more bits, was better posed, or the older sculpt was just cooler than the current one.

My Top 5

1. Ork Boyz

  • The Armageddon ones are pretty nice, but I still think the older Ork Boyz from two refreshes ago encapsulate the goofiness of Orks that the last two kits don't quite capture.
  • Plus all the juicy bits in the older box have kept me stocked up for years for various projects. I would buy it again just for bits.

2. Sanguinary Guard

  • IMO GW messed up big time with the new kit. It's not bad from far away but compared to the old kit they lack any sort of vibe. Posing is also not the best.
  • I have seen some cool kitbashes where people glue wings onto them though.

3. Ork Trukk

  • The new Trukk is $85 at GW. What the heck?! At 60 points that's selling for roughly $0.70 per point. This might be one of the most expensive models GW sells on a $ per point basis. This is especially bad since most Ork players will own multiples.
  • I've seen the old Trukk going for around $40 used. I like both, but I enjoy the simplicity and look of the old Trukk more.

4. Box Dreads

  • I love these things. They are kind of derpy, but they have so much charm compared to newer Dreads.
  • Newer Dreads are probably better models, but I stubbornly will always prefer Box Dreads.

5. Smaller Daemons (in general)

  • When I was window shopping for a Daemon army, I came across a listing for some old Daemons. I was surprised by how well designed the 4th/5th edition Fantasy models were.
  • The aesthetic was much more horrifying and interesting to look at than the models available today. Blood letters, Horrors, Daemonettes look like they would tear you apart vs looking like a scary childern's cartoon.
  • The quality and detail of the models probably don't hold up in 2026, but design-wise, I wish current Daemons looked like that. It would push me into them 100%.

What older sculpts do you champion and think are still worth buying today? Extra points if they blend well with a modern army.

It doesn't have to be 40K. AoS and other Warhammer players are always welcome!

CRPG Humble Bundle & Free Fan Made Expansions for Amazing Warhammer Board Games

This is another post with a mish-mash of Warhammer-related stuff I found over the last few days. No big intro today just some really cool (if a bit niche) Warhammer stuff you can get for FREE or at a massive discount.

Humble CRPG Bundle

For $23, you get access to 11 items, with the most important being Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader CRPG with the Season Pass, which IMO is the best Warhammer game ever made.

It sells for $50 MSRP on Steam with the Season Pass selling for $30 by itself. You can find the game on sale decently often for as low as $15-$20 so if you only want this game specifically you could wait for a Warhammer 40K video game sale.

However, the rest of this bundle is top-tier. To avoid going off on non-Warhammer-related topics you also get the following great games:

  • Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous - Very solid game especially if you like tabletop RPGs.
  • SKALD - An indie game I have heard good things about from friends.
  • Disco Elysium - Phenomenal story-based game.

Plus these other games. They have positive ratings, but I can't personally recommend them since I haven't played them myself:

  • Black Geyser w/ expansion
  • Torment
  • Gamedec
  • UnderRail
  • Balrum

$23 just for Rogue Trader & Disco Elysium is worth it.

Fan-Made Expansions for Warhammer Board Games

I play a ton of board games, so this week, while playing games with friends, we started talking about fan-made expansions. I decided to take a deeper look and found 2 of the best expansions (fan-made or not) for 2 really amazing games: Blood Bowl Team Manager & Forbidden Stars.

Fan Expansion for Blood Bowl Team Manager

Blood Bowl Team Manager is a card game based on Blood Bowl. It's a really fun card game in which players allocate cards of players from different Blood Bowl teams to different tournaments being held, with the goal of winning tournaments across 5 rounds by having the most "star power" (or strength) in each tournament.

But it has all the wackiness of Blood Bowl, with random events, cheating, killing your opponent's players (cards), rolling dice, adding Star Players, etc. Great game worth trying if you like Blood Bowl or chaotic card games. It has a 7.4/10 rating on Board Game Geek so it's overall well-liked. You don't need to like Blood Bowl like this game, but it does help.

However, the game didn't sell super well and went out of print quickly leaving the game stuck without all the teams. Since it wasn't super popular to begin with and GW never licensed out the IP again some fans created their own fan-made expansion adding a bunch of teams that aren't in the original game. Adds a ton of replay ability and theme to the game that would be missing if this expansion wasn't created.

If you own this game (or know someone who does) the expansion is available at the link above for at-home printing. I would recommend trying it. I wish I owned a copy of the game personally. Its a bit expensive online for one in good condition.

Forbidden Stars: Galaxy in Flames Fan-Made Expansion

Forbidden Stars is a complex 4X (explore, expand, exploit, exterminate) board game that pits Ultramarines, Eldar, Orks, and World Eaters against each other vying for control over a map.

This game is way too complicated to explain in a paragraph (plus I only played it once so I'm a bit hazy on all the rules) but it's very epic in scale. If you enjoy playing Warhammer you will enjoy Forbidden Stars as it captures the cinematic moments of classic 40K in a board game. This game is heavily out of print. I played it once with a random person that I never saw again and never found anyone else local who owned it.

However, for those who do own it or have someone you know who owns it there is a popular fan-made expansion called Galaxy in Flames that adds 4 new factions: Imperial Guard, Necrons, Tyranids, and Tau. It also adds more Warlord options for each faction and more cards.

This expansion has overwhelmingly positive reviews, and if you're interested in this game but worried about the $200-$300 secondhand price tag just know there is more content for this game available so you won't get bored too quickly.

This game is also getting reprinted with a Cthulhu theme called Old Ones Origins. It will likely be cheaper than buying Forbidden Stars, but you will lose out on the much more interesting Warhammer theme.

BONUS: Poorhammer Horde Mode 11th Edition

This is the co-op variant for Warhammer 40K developed by the Poorhammer podcast. I talked about this before in another post, but I forgot to give everyone the link to access the rules! Whoops.

I am fixing that mistake here. They also have a Discord link you can find in the link above. Great variant game mode to try out with buddies. I need to get an 11th Edition game of this in sooner rather than later and maybe review it.

Keep Legends Playable Initiative

I came across a post by user u/rampantfirefly, who has built a community-driven platform for keeping Warhammer 40K Legends playable moving forward after GW put a few popular Space Marine models into Legends.

Big props to them for creating what looks to be a Wiki-like website where the community can vote and decide on the best way to keep Legends updated and balanced.

I am a big proponent of Legends being used in all non-competitive games, but I think GW does a poor job of actually maintaining Legends. I've had games where Legends units either did nothing or warped the game in weird ways due to interactions that no one expected.

Having a way for the community to keep these units up to date with game changes is really cool! If you're interested in learning more, please check out the link to their post and the main site.
