Just because you brought your children does NOT mean the space needs to automatically become child-friendly.
I play in a very political punk band. We say a lot of outrageous shit as a way to take our frustrations out in a safe, (arguably) artistic manner. We do it so the people who hate the state of politics can have a fun time and feel like their concerns are heard.
We had some people, including other bands, over to our rehearsal space the other day for a barbecue, impromptu punk show. A member of another band said "we can only come if we bring our kids, because we can't afford a sitter." I'm a reasonable guy. I don't find any joy in being around children, but I felt that uninviting them would be rude, since I totally understand what it feels like to be excluded due to financial restraints. Also, it felt very much against punk music to exclude people because they don't have a lot of money. He also is completely aware of how I feel about children. He, to his credit, never makes me spend time with his kids alone or asks me to help with them in any way.
Cut to the barbecue. My band starts playing and after the first song he says "hey... can you tone it down a little bit? My kid asked me a few questions about what you meant when you said a few things, and I don't really think they're ready for that."
Fuck. That. Do you take your kids to an R rated movie and then ask the director after the fact to tone it down? Do you go to an art museum and then ask an artist not to paint certain things? I know some people DO, but we call those people "assholes."
I went out of my way to allow kids in a space that is primarily child-free, and he decided his kids being there meant it was a fucking Chuck E. Cheese.
Also, on a slightly unrelated topic, STOP ALLOWING YOUR FUCKING KIDS TO CORRECT MY "LANGUAGE" WHEN YOU BRING THEM NEAR ME. ESPECIALLY WHEN I SAY SOMETHING THAT ISN'T A SWEAR WORD, LIKE WHEN I SAY SOMETHING IS "STUPID." FUCK YOU.
