👋Welcome to r/HikerTrashMeals!

Hey, I'm u/mrfowl, one of the founders of r/HikerTrashMeals. This sub is a place to post backpacking food (more specifically, to trips where resupplying is needed). Recipes should be lightweight, compact, calorie dense, and mostly non-perishable. If you used cast iron, a low simmer, or were concerned about burning your food, this is probably not the right sub for you. r/TrailMeals might be a better fit.

Posts here should contain the recipe at minimum (take a look at our rules please). Ideally they should have the calorie count, and if possible other macros as well, bonus points for cal/g. Post flair is required so we can sort recipes. Please look through all of the available flairs and choose the most appropriate one.

We're generally pretty friendly, but we will fight for each other, so try not to be an ass. Please poke around for a bit and engage with the community before you make your first post. That way you'll get a better idea of what's expected in this sub.

Should we add a new rule?

Originally this sub started as a place to post interesting recipes so other backpackers could get ideas. I'd still like to keep it steering in that direction and I think this rule would help keep a little of the old spirit alive. Plus it seems like we've gotten quite a few spectators recently that are a little confused

Cold soaked mashed potatoes with avocado and shrimp chips

1 bag of instant mashed potatoes (360 cal), a bag of crushed shrimp chips (240 cal), 1 avocado (220 cal). Add some olive oil for more calories if needed (1Tbsp is another 120 cal). I split it into two bags so it's two meals, 470 cal per serving.

Only takes ~30 seconds to mix in some water and smoosh it up in the bag. Can easily prepare and eat it while walking. I recommend a larger ziploc though...

10/10 trail meal.

Advice for first time under a tarp

So I'm planning on doing all the wrong things tomorrow 😁

I have a brand new Splitwing tarp that I've never set up, and I've never camped *under* a tarp before. I live in the city and I didn't have time to go to the park to set it up and adjust the guylines and whatnot before my trip.

Any advice to hopefully avoid a fiasco (other than set up the tarp before hand)? There's a small chance my friends will not be ready when I get to their house tomorrow morning. If that's the case, I'll set it up in their front yard.

I've done plenty of cowboy camping, I've slept rolled up *in* a tarp, I've hammock camped, and I mostly sleep in a x-mid nowadays. I've been camping a lot so I know how to choose a site, angle for wind/rain, avoid buggy/puddle areas, etc.

I did check that it has 6 stakes, and a fair amount of guyline. I did not check if the tarp has any defects... I'll be sleeping on a 3/4 length ccf pad. I have a polycro ground sheet that has not been cut so it's way too big. I'm bringing a SOL bivy just in case, and I have a bug net and deet. I'm confident I won't die, but it's very possible I'll be quite uncomfortable. The weather is supposed to be 10-15mph wind, and ~0.5 inches of rain overnight.

Need help editing my sub

On Android, for r/HikerTrashMeals

I'm trying to make it so that people can't post unless they have some minimum amount of Karma as I've been getting inundated with bot posts that are just stealing previous posts from my sub and reposting them. How can I do this from mobile?

Or better yet, is there a way to make the auto-mod check to see if that same picture has already been posted before? All of these bots post a picture so that would work great.

Heatwave Reminder

Given the heatwave going on around the world right now, I thought this was an important reminder.

While you're outside, check for signs of heatstroke often (every 5-10 minutes). This means looking at their gums, paying attention to their posture/physical signs, etc. I highly recommend you start doing this while you're inside and you know your pup is comfortable so that you have a good baseline. I've had plenty of times when I'm outside and trying to figure out if a symptom is normal or not, and I already pay attention while I'm at home. All of this is useless if your first time checking is while they already have heatstroke.

Early Warning Signs (Heat Stress / Exhaustion):

  • Excessive Panting: Rapid, heavy breathing that does not slow down even after resting in the shade.
  • Sticky Saliva: Drooling that becomes thicker, foamy, or stickier than usual.
  • Gum Discoloration: Bright red gums and tongue, or abnormally pale gums in severe shock. - Restlessness: Pacing, whining, or inability to settle down.

Emergency Symptoms (Heat Stroke):

  • Incoordination: Stumbling, wobbly movements, or dizziness.
  • Weakness or Collapse: Sudden inability to stand, or hind-end weakness.
  • Vomiting & Diarrhea: Gastrointestinal distress, which may contain blood.
  • Extreme Temperature: A rectal body temperature of 104°F (40°C) or higher.
  • Severe Neurological Issues: Seizures, glazed eyes, unconsciousness, or coma.

What to Do Immediately (It is crucial to act fast. Move to safety ASAP):

  • Get your dog out of the sun and into an air-conditioned room or vehicle.
  • Cool safely: Hose or pour cool (not cold) water over their body, particularly around the neck, armpits, and between the hind legs. Avoid covering them in wet towels, as this can trap heat.
  • Offer water: Let them drink cool water, but do not force water into their mouth.
  • Get veterinary help: Heat stroke requires urgent professional stabilization to prevent organ failure. Call your nearest 24/7 emergency animal hospital while you are in transit.

When will there be an upgrade worth $1000?

Fenix 5 still going strong with 10+ days of battery life, excellent GPS, a screen that's readable in all lighting conditions, and durable as heck.

Perfect

Shaved off exactly 0.6 grams from my pillows egregiously overweight tags and string.

New cold soak jar unlocked

It's got a flat bottom, perfect thickness for holding shape, but not too heavy. Nice lid, 12oz which is perfect for a decently large meal. Bonus, it comes with two full high protein meals already included.

Apologies folks

Hey folks, I just wanted to apologize to anyone who has had their comments randomly deleted.

If your comment gets removed, please let me know and I'll look at it (eventually...hopefully). I don't remove comments unless it's blatant spam/harassment, so if you just commented something like, "that looks like gut abuse" it wasn't me that deleted it 😅

For the most part I only actively moderate posts (and reported stuff, thank you for reporting spam! That's much appreciated!). I just looked through the "removal" logs and apparently the auto-mod has been deleting seemingly random comments for a while now. I went back through and approved a bunch, but there were a ton and I gave up.

I'm at a loss

I feel like I've explored every option. I also feel like there's no way this is 50/50 with this many cells...

I've brute forced this so I know R5C5 has to be a 4, but I can't figure out how to do this one without brute forcing it. There's got to be some trick I'm missing, but I can't see anything...
