Can bumps potholes damage suspension?

I ride around NYC and some of the thruways and parkways can be pretty bumpy. Not potholes that can be avoided, but seams or whatever between sections that have a bump over the entire lane.

Often I can spot these in advance and will lift up on my pegs so my legs can absorb some of my body weight, but sometimes I’ll miss this and go over a bump at speed.

Im over thinking this right? The bikes are built to be able to take this and not something i need to worry over?

At MSF they taught how you can blip your throttle a bit that will lighten front suspension a bit, and I try this sometimes but at higher speeds I’m not sure my bike has the pull for this to make much of a difference.

Some noise camera locations

This website is for tracking surveillance cameras, but if you apply filter of operator ‘ New York City Department of environmental protection’ it gives the locations of sound cameras.

https://maps.deflock.org/?lat=40.7934&lng=-73.9322&zoom=10.60

This is community driven so it probably isn’t complete (I assume there are more than 4) and they might be moved etc.

But if you spot one it would be good to update the map (second image shows what they look like)

The fine for a first offense is $800. Im a bit confused exactly what the dB limit needs to be for a violation seems that a lot of people have different ideas 🤷

Tide powder amount for HE front loader

This is my first time using Tide powder (I got a box from Costco today and previously have used pods).

I’m a little confused with the dosing instructions on the box where there is an example for:

  • medium loads (line 2)
  • large loads (line 4)
  • he full loads (line 5)

since only the last one mentions ‘he’ does that mean the first two are for non-he machines?

I assume that HE machines require less detergent than top loaders because they use less water.

I just did a couple loads that I considered medium load (two heavy sweatshirts, 2 pairs sweatpants, a bunch of socks and underwear) and filled to the 2 line on the scoop, which was about 4 tablespoons.

I’m just starting to take more care with my laundry (citric acid coming tomorrow!) and don’t want to be using too much or too little!

Earplugs make such a huge difference

I’m a new rider, and just hit 2000 miles over the last couple months.

I’d been wearing some reusable earplugs that I already owned for concerts, and they definitely made a difference, but I’d noticed that after rides I’d still have some ringing in my ears.

This morning I grabbed some 30 db foam earplugs from pharmacy ($5 for pack of 10) and wore them for about 1 hour of highway riding and AMAZED at how they block out wind and engine noise. I basically just hear my breathing at lower speeds.

What surprised me is that I also feel a lot more relaxed and comfortable on the bike. I guess I hadn’t realized that constant screaming level noise was subconsciously making me a bit tense.

Anyway, that’s my advice for other new riders to also try out some earplugs.

Outdoor seating like Prince Coffee House?

I’ve only been to Prince Coffee House a couple times but I love it for its large sidewalk table seating.

Are there other places like this I can visit that have a similar outdoor sidewalk seating?

This week I’ve been doing my first spa days in a 1940s apartment building, and draining the soup (biz or FEBU and tide oxy pods) in my bathtub.

Now the downstairs neighbor has a leak coming from my bathroom, we have a plumber coming to fix tomorrow, but with timing of the spa days I’m wondering if the enzymes/detergent concentrations might be problematic with older plumbing? Or just a coincidence?

Another theory is that was there was a leak already but was gunked up with accumulation from the decades and the gunk was washed away with the spa day soup exposing a covered leak.

I have a soak in progress when the super came to inspect and I’ve been asked to not use the tub until it’s fixed, so I’m not sure what my best option is, to put the soup in the toilet or try and take to basement and pour down basement laundry sink.

I just ordered a 2lb bag of FEBU that’s advertised as 90 loads, but that’s for laundry booster not spa day.

If I’m reading instructions correctly, it’s 1/4 cup of FEBU per gallon of water. I’m using a small (6 gallon) container so they would be 1.5 cups of FEBU, which seems like a lot!

I’d also ordered a couple small bags of Biz before reading the spa day instructions and used one entire bag per soak (they were small 8 oz bags from Amazon) 🫪

for my Biz soaks I was doing whites but accidentally included an items that had some red areas printed that started leaking, so I removed as soon as I noticed (after about 20 mins) rinsed, and started a new soak with fresh Biz. from the first soak the water got pretty soupy in just 20 mins, and on the second soak I left for 8 hours but didn’t really get very soupy although the pillowcases I added still have a bit of a crayon/waxy scent so maybe I need the FEBU for those, or maybe I did something wrong?
