Bike damaged during towing by NYPD - what now?

Woke up yesterday without my bike. I checked the location of the AirTag I have in it, and it showed up at the local precinct.

Walked there, asked for the bike, they confirmed it was there. The officer who did the towing was not at the precinct, so another officer brought me to the alley, gave me my bike, and told me to “call the precinct later in the day” and ask for the officer.

When he brought me to the alley where they’d decided to store my bike, I immediately pointed out a lot of scratches that were new, and I could see some scratches as if the bike had fallen on its side. The officer said he had no idea about the procedure.

I tried calling the precinct yesterday afternoon, no one picked up. Even the direct phone number the detective squad gave me wasn’t picked up.

I have no official ticket from the NYPD, no towing report, just a ‘Voucher number’ and the name of the officer who did the towing.

Is there anything I can do now to recoup the money for the repairs? I don’t mind paying the fine since the parking wasn’t legal, that’s a separate issue. But having my bike damaged because of how they handled it… well, it sucks.

What is going on at New York Honda Yamaha?

A decade ago, this shop seemed well recommended and was pretty good to go to.

I can't really make heads or tails of this place since covid though, I hear weird things like they had issues with employees stealing or collecting payments into personal accounts, or there were service issues and getting basic things went from taking a couple hours to taking 3/4 of the day because it was an ol' boys club where their friends were seen first.

I'm in Brooklyn and there's not a lot near me. Prospect Powersports is probably the closest but I don't know much about them and don't see much said but there's time I feel like I should really find alternatives.

Did anyone ride home from the rockaway's today?

I just caught caught in the crazy storm I've ever experienced.

I'm a 220 lb man running a heavy ass royal Enfield and I almost got blown over so many times.

In my 30 years of riding motorcycles, this was the first time I was actually afraid for my life. Holy shit

Wash/detailing near Coney Island/brooklyn?

Anyone know a good motorcycle wash/detailing service in Brooklyn/Coney island or NYC for a Harley Fat Bob? Looking for someone who does a thorough clean and detailing, including chrome, wheels, and hard-to-reach areas. Recommendations appreciated. 🙏🏾

Favorite routes to LI beaches or port towns?

Looking to explore more of Long Island and go to towns like Northport or some of the natural beaches. I’ve never driven a car there though and am not sure if there’s any decent routes exist.

Paying $300 to borrow a Class M bike for my road test — Staten Island, tomorrow 3PM

Paying $300 cash for about an hour of your and your bike’s time tomorrow (Tuesday) at 3pm. Looking for a rider to bring a registered, insured motorcycle over to the DMV site (35 Delwit Ave, Staten Island, NY 10306, USA) and let me use it for the test. The test itself runs 10-15 minutes — you'd just hang out while I take it, then ride home.

About me: motorcycle permit in hand, MSF course passed, solid seat time. Happy to sign something before I touch the bike to cover any eventual damages (don’t count on there being any, I have riding significant riding experience).

Bike needs to be street-legal, registered, insured, and in working order — examiner checks. Any size/style works except scooters. Happy to cover gas/tolls on top of the $300 if you're coming from far.

Don’t let your bike catch dust when you could be earning $$$ - DM me if you're in or know someone who'd be down.

Trying to get rid of a motorcycle

I need to get rid of a motorcycle that I lost the title for. It's an old 81 250 Suzuki that hasn't run in years. Anyone know where I could turn? Junkyard? Scrap yard?

Riding correctly increases my chances of getting hit

New rider here. I've been riding pretty much every day since I bought my first bike about two months ago, and I'm having fun. But there's something I've been noticing the more I ride, and I'm not sure if it's just me or if this is a real thing.

This mostly happens on the highway, but I've seen it on local roads too. When I ride "correctly"—staying in my lane, keeping pace with traffic, being predictable—I feel like I'm constantly dealing with close calls. People cutting me off, merging into my lane, brake-checking me (pickup trucks). Nothing crazy, but enough to notice a pattern.

But when I ride more aggressively—moving faster than the flow of traffic, filtering when I can—I'm never in a spot long enough for someone to merge into me. I'm just... not there to be hit.

I know we're basically invisible to drivers, especially when they're texting or scrolling TikTok. But it's wild to me that the "safe" way to ride feels more dangerous than the "spirited" way.

I don't even know what point I'm trying to make anymore haha. Just curious if any other new riders have noticed this, or if this is just part of the learning curve. I’m Open to all thoughts!

A few questions for Vespa / scooter owners re rain, snow storage etc

I want to get a Vespa later this month after I get my license. I’ve heard a few people say that they are kind of useless in the rain. A friend of mine said it’s fine as long as you’re just slow and careful. Obviously I’m not going to ride it in a full downpour but drizzling / wet road?

Regarding the deep winter months - Jan through March is it going to get completely trashed on the street? What did you do when we had that 2 weeks of ice this past winter?

As of now, I have nowhere to park one except on the street. Is there affordable seasonal storage anyone could recommend? Another friend of mine had a GTS that he rode year round. But he had a front patio to park it on too.

In any case, I’m not gonna get a new one bc I don’t think I could stand how precious it would be. Preferably one that already has a few dings….

Use Caution on FDR Southbound

Obviously always be vigilant on the FDR, but particularly been noticing this sequence of 3 manhole covers in the leftmost lane on Southbound FDR btwn 39th and 38th streets.

They come up right after a bottleneck, when you're getting back on the throttle :) And they're all 3 at random ass places in the lane, and they are each differently indented into the ground at weird angles, and one of them is really deep. And there's even a fourth one in the middle lane a little further down, right about at the place you have inevitably decided "wow this lane is a goddamn minefield"

I've been on the FDR a lot this summer, getting used to it, but made a mental note to post about these today because they damn near got me when I first encountered em. Hope this helps someone

This would prevent most thefts in NYC

After riding the last 13 years in New York City. I’m convinced that a grinder resistant U lock through the front wheel which stop most attacks. In my opinion, most attacks are someone just push pushing your bike away. Not picking it up and putting it in a truck.

I’m looking to get a 50cc moped or scooter for occasional commuting and getting around. I live in brooklyn and would be commuting to the LES. from what I understand, you cant take them into the bike lane over the williamsburg bridge but the car lanes are unsafe and the scooter is too slow for it. torn on what to do. whats your advice on this?

150cc scooter instructor needed

I need a patient, English-speaking instructor for private, 1-on-1 basic training in an empty parking lot, NOT the street.

I need to pass the road test but every school around me only offers these 150cc razor scooters and I don't know how to do automatic so well.

I went to a driving school in the Bronx but the instructor barely spoke English and didn't even bother trying to teach me the very basics before plunging me on to a busy Bronx Street.

Needless to say I was not comfortable at all with the lesson and I got my money back but I still need to learn in order to pass the road test.

If anybody out there know some instructor or has a 150cc automatic scooter that they could teach me to get started on in a parking lot I would pay for your services.

Bike Recommendations for LIE into Manhattan commuting?

Tl;dr: Bike recs for 600-750cc manual transmission bike that can do 2 hour commutes that are split between 70+mph highways and the city?

Longer version:

I'm looking at an occasional commute of 90min-2hours from LI to Manhattan, and would love to do it on a motorcycle instead of in a cage. I'm pretty far east of the city. For the record I did the MSF course and have the license. I currently have a Vespa 300cc I ride around town and it can get 70+mph on local highways, but on the LIE I would be doing that for 45-75minutes depending on traffic and the wind can be exhausting. I've also been looking to "level up" with a manual bike, so I'm looking in the 600-750cc range (tell me if you think that's the wrong target). My timeline is within the next year so I'm not in a rush.

Based on all these factors, I've been thinking of something with fairings, which sport bikes have but my understanding is that sport bikes get tiring after leaning forward on them for a half hour (I don't know as I haven't ridden one) and so doesn't fit with needing to ride on the highway for an hour or more. At the same time I don't think a touring bike is right either because I want something that is nimble enough in the city. Keep in mind I haven't ridden either so if I sound like a moron let me know. My driving experience is the Honda Nighthawk at the MSF course and the Vespa 300

Right now when I'm doing 70mpg on my Vespa it's for short spurts on the highway and I really have to lean into the wind to not become a sail. It's exhilarating for a few seconds but would be exhausting to drive like that for more than a few minutes.

Northern CT / Southern Berkshires Ride

Sharing my route for a 2-day trip I recently took around northern CT and the Southern Berkshires with an overnight stay in New Hartford. Practically zero highways and loads of scenic roads and twisties. ~800 miles with some detours, and would probably have split the 2nd day into two days to spend some extra time in the Berkshires if time permitted.

Recommended stops at the Sharon Audobon Society to see some awesome birbs, hiking the Pine Knob Loop around Housatonic Park, Barkhamsted Reservoir, and Chris & MJ's for food in Sheffield MA. Plus a HIGHLY recommended detour near Pittsfield to Pittsfield State Forest to do the Berry Pond loop up the mountain for a stunning view that you can ride directly to.
