If you defeat a character that will later become recruitable, and they retreat, can they still be recruited later?

Controls switching between wii and standard controller mid-game, how to fix this?
I've tried switching wii remote to "none" in dolphin's controller settings, but it switches back when I return to gaming mode and turn on the game. I try holding the select button and moving the left stick down to disconnect the wiimote, but it reconnects a couple seconds later. Is there any way to fix this?
Edit: game is Radiant Dawn, and im on steam deck

Im open to any genre but really like things that are scifi, fantasy, or have fantasy elements. Sequel baiting is fine but it should tell a complete story in the existing seasons.
