We had a falling out over something stupid — money, ego, the usual family stuff. I was the one who stopped picking up. Told myself he could reach out first. Classic standoff.
Three years go by. I'm doing fine, or at least that's what I kept telling myself. Then one random Tuesday I'm cleaning out my apartment and I find this old birthday card he sent me the first year we stopped talking. He still sent it. Just in case, I guess.
I sat on my kitchen floor for like 20 minutes just holding it. Then I called him.
He picked up on the first ring. First thing he said wasn't "where have you been" or "do you know how long it's been." He just said "hey sweetheart, I was hoping you'd call today."
Today wasn't my birthday. It wasn't any special day. I asked him why today specifically.
He said "I say that every time the phone rings."
I ugly cried for the first time in probably 10 years. We talked for 4 hours straight.
Don't let it be 3 years. Call your person.
TL;DR — stopped talking to my dad over nothing, found an old birthday card he still sent during our silence, called him, turns out he'd been hoping it was me every single time his phone rang for 3 years 💀
