Nature Merit Badge 4b(2)

I am an MBC for the Nature Merit Badge and just started it as a group with a patrol. I have been approved for a while, but this is my first time counseling for a merit badge. This requirement says “Make plaster casts of the tracks of a wild animal.” Since tracks are sometimes luck of the draw on finding them, is this something that would be acceptable if the group participated in making a cast together, or does it need to be each individual Scout making their own cast with their own track? Or is this an “up to the MBC’s discretion” thing?

What is this car part and where does it go?

This plug-like piece was on the floor (driver’s side) of my 2013 Honda Accord. It says Honda on it, so obviously it came from somewhere in the car, but I can’t figure out where it came from to put it back. What is it and where does it go? Thanks in advance.

Finished projects so far this year

Quilts for 3 pregnant coworkers, one “big sister” Minnie Mouse quilt to avoid jealousy that baby is getting a new quilt, one baby quilt from leftovers to donate to a local charity, and a Grinch quilt for me.

Help me come up with a layout for my extra blocks!

I made this “Hugs and Kisses” (pattern from Jaybird Quilts) as a baby blanket for a coworker. The pattern used a jelly roll and had instructions to cut 6 blocks for each set of 3 strips. However, once I started cutting them, I was actually able to get 8 blocks per 3 strips. I didn’t have enough backing fabric to make this quilt longer with the extra blocks (and the mama asked for a smaller, tummy time sized baby quilt anyway), so now I have 16 extra blocks (8 of each right and left handed “A” and “B” blocks).

I think I’d like to just use them up in another baby quilt to donate to our local Newborns in Need chapter, but they require donated quilts to be at lease 35”x45”. Each of my leftover blocks will be 6”x6” when finished, so I need to come up with something to add to what I have. I feel like laying them out in a small scale version of the normal pattern and just adding borders will look a little funny. I have also come up with laying them out as a kind of zig-zaggy border and adding other stuff in the middle and around the sides. Does anyone else have any other layout suggestions?

I have a decent amount of the brown and tan binding/flange fabrics left over. I have some of the backing that could maybe be used as cornerstone blocks for borders, and some of the cream colored fabric left. Those were yardage from the quilt store, so I’m not sure if they will have more on the bolt or not if I go back. The green gingham and green with white polka dots were also off the bolt, so I could potentially get more of those, but don’t have enough left of either to do much with. Everything else was jelly roll and I am out of it. I am not opposed to pulling other fabrics from my stash or buying more yardage; I just need an idea of what I am going for on a layout so I know what I need.

Feature Request: Assigning different people to repeating events

We have some events in our iCal calendar that are repeating events (like music lessons for the kids or whatever) that get pulled into our Skylight calendar. The Skylight seems to struggle with assigning people’s colors for these events. Sometimes it freezes and refuses to let us change the color altogether, so it has to stay as the default color for the iCal calendar. Sometimes it lets us do it for ALL of the events in that series, but if we need to change which adult is responsible for being chauffeur that week, it doesn’t work. It would be really helpful for organizing rides and easily seeing conflicts if our “mom,” “dad,” and “grandparents” colors could be assigned to those events.

Has anyone found a work around for this that doesn’t involve getting rid of the repeating event in iCal and entering each week individually?

Cancer really fast-tracks “burnout” at work…

I’m a couple years out of “active” cancer treatment, still in “maintenance” treatment. I was able to take several months off during the worst of it, then built back up with part time for a while. Now I’m back to full time, and it’s killing me. It’s been almost a year at this pace. I am exhausted physically and mentally. I feel like I can barely walk sometimes because everything hurts. I make it through the day at work, running purely on adrenaline and pure force of will, wearing a cheerful public-facing mask like I’m OK. Then I come home and crash on the couch, sometimes barely able to climb the stairs in my own home.

I spoke with the powers that be about the possibility of 0.8 FTE. That’s where my husband and I have calculated out a (hopeful) sweet spot of paying bills and work vs. respite time. I was hopeful that they would be flexible with me given the fact that they were understanding of me needing to work back up with part-time after surgeries and chemo. I was basically told they won’t do it, and they don’t want part-time employees in general. I was literally told it’s easier to just find someone else who wants full-time. I feel defeated and expendable. My choices are to keep burning the candle at both ends or be unemployed. I’ve spent over a decade in education for this profession, and another decade actually doing it. I don’t even know where to start envisioning myself doing something else; I just want to do it for a few hours less per week.
