[PSA] Beware of renting bikes from Royal Brothers: their negligence resulted in brake failure

Original post with full details here.

TLDR:

  1. Bike was delivered without proper front brake
  2. A RB technician came home and installed incompatible brake pads from a completely different bike model - this was a disaster waiting to happen
  3. 20km outside Bangalore, the front brake failed completely since the pad itself came out. By sheer luck I managed to stop the bike without crashing
  4. Customer care's solution was to suggest that I should "carefully and slowly" ride a bike without front brake and return the bike to their hub
  5. The bike was booked for 24hrs/240km. Because of complete front brake failure, so far from the city, I had to cut the trip short and return home
  6. Even the technician who came to recover the bike confirmed incompatible brake pads were used, and he too was afraid of riding the bike back when the front brake was not working

So it wasn't a single instance of bike randomly breaking down. The pattern of how Royal Brothers fails to maintain their vehicle in working order, and gambles with the safety of their customer's as well as its employees life is crystal clear from the above incidents. A month ago, another redditor posted about how the rear brake on his bike failed when he took the bike from Bangalore to Ooty. Imagine riding on narrow, twisty roads with no rear brake!

PS: I know better than to trust rental agencies. That's precisely why I went to their hub without even booking the bike. I spoke to the staff to see if the bike had any issues. I made it absolutely clear that I was not in a hurry to book the bike, if there were any issues, I was more than happy to come back tomorrow once they were fixed. I made the mistake of believing their assurances, saw the new tyre, clean and lubed chain, checked disc rotors for scratches that indicate worn pads, and after all this diligence still ended up getting fooled.

And remember even if you crash due to a legit reason, they will profit from their own negligence by blaming you for riding recklessly. Their greed is making them to gamble with your life.

Garbage truck broken down on Ragigudda flyover. So will BTP ban them from all flyovers?

Was riding on the flyover about 60 mins back and a garbage truck has stopped on the left lane, creating a huge bottleneck and causing a jam. For extra effects, it's leaking the liquid part of its cargo onto the road as well.

So since the officials want to ban 2 wheelers under the pretense of them causing jams when broken down on narrow flyovers, will they apply the same language to every vehicle, since every vehicle can possibly breakdown.

The reasoning is laughable. Whether one 2 wheeler breaks down or ten, they will still occupy a very small space on the narrowest of flyovers, it's basically negligible. A single stopped 4+ wheeler will block not just 50% of traffic, but more like 90% since there will be a contention from both lanes to merge into one.

Also, isn't targeting a specific class of road users discriminatory?

25 hrs from Passport renewal application submission to Police Verification visit. Is this some kind of record?

My passport had expired 3+ years ago so Police Verification was mandatory upon renewal.

Yesterday around this time I was sitting at the Passport Seva Kendra going from one counter to the next. And just some time back got a call from my local Police Station regarding a house call for the verification.

He arrived, spent a couple of minutes asking basic questions and looking at my ID, and collected copies of the same docs I'd shown at PSK yesterday. As he was leaving my dad handed him a pen (we had donated some 2.4k+ pens to govt. school kids a couple of years ago. We had 100+ left over, most of which we gave to Broseph, still had a dozen or so at home). But he still asked if I had to pay any "fees." I just shook my head and said no. He said the file will be forwarded to the Passport Office within a week and left.

So all in all about 25 hours from applying to verification visit! Even I'm surprised by their speed. Or was it this fast since it was a renewal at the same address?

PSA: Script to Backup/Restore your keybinds automagically

If you have more than a couple of devices/module, you know how frustrating importing your keybinds one by one can be. So I wrote a script to avoid the tedious task of importing every keybinds LUA file on a per device, per module basis.

Features:

  • Hit that Backup button to save a timestamped ZIP file of all your keybinds. Do this any time you change keybinds, and before every DCS update
  • If you have to reinstall Windows, or you got a new PC, all you have to do is extract a backup ZIP and the script will automatically deal with the UUID changes and batch import ALL keybinds in a few clicks
  • Bonus: it restores modifiers too! Anytime you see the red exclamation pop up, just restore your latest backup and you're done

First time install might seem a bit daunting since the script depends on 3rd party DLLs to find the UUID of attached devices, so a step-by-step walkthrough is provided on the github along with screenshots. This is a one time setup. There after backing up or restoring is just a few mouse clicks.

So get the script, and start backing up! The script has been around for quite a while now and bugs ironed out. If you find it doesn't work for a particular device (due to weird device name) drop a post in the forum thread.
