Caraça Sanctuary, Catas Altas-Brazil.

The religious occupation of this region began in 1774, when a Portuguese priest fleeing persecution by the Enlightenment government of the Marquis of Pombal in Portugal founded a small church for pilgrims and faithful of the region. The church grew and over time gained fame and recognition from ecclesiastical and secular authorities in Brazil.

In 1820, the space was completely remodeled. The old colonial church was demolished, and a larger church in the Neo-Gothic style was built and occupied by a boys' school, the so-called "Colégio do Caraça," which became a highly prestigious educational institution in Brazil, even having some former presidents as students.

The site functioned as a school and church until 1968 when it was damaged by a fire and abandoned. In 1981, it became a National Park focused on preserving the fauna and flora of the mountainous region where it is located and as a popular ecotourism center.
