Picross 3D Inspired game I've been working on. Thoughts?

Hi everyone!

I posted about this before but had to take a pause because I got a new job out of college and had to move. I've picked it back up. It's a Picross 3D styled game but designed to be played with a controller. I got a lot of helpful feedback when I last posted about it and I plan to develop a demo. I'd be happy to hear any more feedback. This certainly isn't the final version, lol. I have tons of ideas I want to implement too like power ups and a combo system which I've already began to implement but aren't fully present in this video.

Hope you all enjoy. I just wanted to share my progress and hear any criticisms.

This will be my final update on these icons here, as I want to respect the community and avoid spamming the subreddit.

When I originally posted, I was looking for feedback on my lighting and modeling. The critiques I received from you all were incredibly helpful, and I feel like these are turning out great! (I'm still relatively new to this—prior to this project, I had only ever used Blender for 3D print modeling).

For context, these are being developed for a custom Linux GNOME icon pack, and I couldn't be happier with the progress. The Camera icon is definitely my personal favorite so far. I put in a lot of work to get the cool effect and learned so much about textures. I've also included a screenshot of from Blender just to showcase the workflow (and to confirm they aren't AI-generated, lol).

If anyone is interested in the final release, I’ll be posting updates over on r/gnome. These are all the icons I've completed so far. The next icon I am working on is one for Blender. Once the pack is complete and published to GitHub, I'll make sure to drop the link back in this thread as well.

Thank you all again for the constructive criticism and support. I appreciate it greatly! Can you guess all the icons?

Edit:

Q: Do I have an order of deciding what icon to create next?

A: No, I just choose what seems the most interesting, easiest, and enjoyable to create. I also have a bias towards apps I use.

Q: Are you looking for suggestions on what icons to make next?

A: Yes please! Comment away! Although, I plan to get the basics done first.

Also, for the suggestions I received about the Clock icon, I decided to keep the hands of the clock squares off and not rounded like in the original because the rounded ones didn't appear as well in 3D. I also got a suggestion from previously to add the clock ticks and I think it turned out really well and helps to flush out the icon. Should I keep them? And as mentioned previously, the original icon had a black dot in the very center, but I could not translate that well to 3D at all. Also, I tested a couple other background colors for the clock icon since some people said the Peach color didn't fit well, but personally I just could not find any color that would fit. I am stubborn on this and will keep it like it is. I think it adds variety anyways because I don't have many icons I can add a pink background to.

Lastly, the different uses of different textures (metalic, glossy, glass, matte) were not because of inconsistencies but rather intentional. I think it gives a nice variety because one comment I got last time said using the same textures for everything made everything look waxy, which I agree on.

This is the HDRI I used for lighting (with some adjustments): https://polyhaven.com/a/monochrome_studio_02

Hello,

To keep it short, I am creating an icon pack for my desktop applications. They are heavily inspired off the default app icons and I am a newbie at rendering and lighting. I am using Blender, which I am familiar with from modeling for 3D Printing, but never rendered in it. After watching a couple of tutorials, I think I am proud of what I've done, but I know it could be better. I think the biggest struggle of mine is the lighting, especially with the clock icon. I would really appreciate any feedback and suggestions.

I've included two icons I've made so far, the originals, a mockup of what they would look like on the desktop, and also a screenshot of my model open in Blender to rule out any AI suspicion (not that they're any good, lol).

Thank you :)

Hello,

I've been inspired to create my own icon pack for my computer and wanted to recreate the default icons in 3D. However, I only know Blender from modeling 3D Prints, and I really am not familiar with rendering or lighting.

I think the icon models themselves turned out really nice and I am proud (even though they may not be great I'm just glad what I was able to accomplish on my own), but I feel like the lighting could be way better. I want them to pop and have shadow since they'll be so small on my screen I want the user to KNOW they are 3D, but especially with the clock icon, I feel like the shadow takes up a lot of space and makes the left corner look really dark.

While it's technically not necessary, I've included the default icons for the purpose of comparison, as well as a mockup of my icons where they would be. I've also attached a screenshot of my model in Blender just to avoid any AI accusations... not that they're that good lmao. I rendered the images at 4k for sharing, but when it comes time to export them, I will most likely render at a resolution of 512 or 1024 so it can scale as an icon.

I am basically a beginner, so any feedback would be much appreciated! Not just with lighting, but anything you have to offer as I'm sure there's many aspects I can improve upon. Thank you :)
