There probably are not many movies that only take place in a Mall or Department Store, are there?

So I guess movies prominently featuring them are okay, too.

Here's some to get us started (spanning 100 years):

Harold Lloyd's Safety Last (1923)

Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times (1936) - Mother of all 'overnight lock-in' fantasies

Jerry Lewis' Who's Minding The Store (1963) - Endorsing the 'credit card' lifestyle

Logan's Run (1976) - Used a Dallas Mall as one of the futuristic locations

Dawn Of The Dead (1978) - Monroeville Mall. This established a solid Z-Movie Trope

The Blues Brothers (1980) - Dixie Square Mall. Three memorable minutes of mayhem

Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982) - Sherman Oaks Galleria. Is this the original Mallrats?

Gremlins (1984) - Filmset

Mannequin (1987) - Wanamakers, PHL. Predates 'Lars and the Real Girl' by two decades

Career Opportunities (1991) - Target Store #378. Pays tribute to 'Modern Times'

Mallrats (1995) - Eden Prairie Center. ("Would you like a chocolate-covered pretzel?")

International Left Handers Day is coming (August 13th)! (Edit: And it'll be the 50th Anniversary!)

The perfect opportunity to raise some awareness!

So how's about devising some activity challenges for righthanded people?

Keep in mind that Left Handers Day is not the Day of Reckoning!

The idea is to give Righties a managable task, so they can get an idea of what it means to be confronted with righthanded tools as a Lefty. Whereas making them do things lefthanded, like writing or drawing a line inside a maze, would be the same unfair disadvantage as asking you to do it righthanded. Tho having them complete a [buzzing wire] or use a Yoyo with their left hand might make for some innocent fun when approached with a friendly attitude.

Here's a suggestion:

Required Materials

• 1 Righthanded Person
• 1 pair of true, non-ergonomic(!), lefthanded scissors
• 1 pair of non-ergonomic righthanded scissors, preferably identical (OPTIONAL!)
• 1 Printout of the following image

When printing the image on US-Legal-Size or A4, use \"best fit\" so it fills the page.

Instructions:

Hand the printout and LH scissors to the righthanded person. Hand them both at once, holding the scissors in your left and the paper in your right, do not point out that you are giving them LH scissors!

Casually instruct them to cut along the spiraling dotted line as accurate as possible!

Regardless of which snake they start with... the LH scissors obstruct their view and they will likely mention that this is hard to do. Suggest they try the other snake as it might be easier for them.

As this will turn out to make not much of a difference, you can next hand them the RH Scissors to "see if it's easier this way". (This part is optional)

Important: Make sure to not embarass your candidates by exposing their lacking skill as a weakness or making fun of them. A simple "Now do you see...?" works a lot better than a taunt.

Remember: You are an ambassador for a good cause, not The Punisher getting even with 'em!

P.S.: Since the completed snake is a "convection spiral", this test can also a be made into a fun activity for young children. Just add some coloring pens, a roll of yarn and a tape dispenser to your setup and let them personalize their snake before testing - under adult supervision(!) - what type of scissors they prefer. A length of yarn attached to the end of the snakes tail completes the kinetic sculpture they can then take home with them.

While I firmly believe, that we see some special effect at work whenever a movie character imbibes the contents of a Lava Lamp - afaik only done by Damon Wayans in "Earth Girls Are Easy" (1988) and by Christopher Lloyd in "My Favorite Martian" aka "My Uncle The Alien" (1999) - I also wonder if that "stunt" could be done safely when using food-grade ingredients? Or is it even easier as that and they just took some Ipecac or sent some neutralizing agents after the lava?!?!

Fact is, the lava drinking scene is never a continuous shot from them looking at the active Lamp to them drinking the contents. They're never shown opening the bottle and when they drink, they're only shown in profile, which could easily hide some contraption leading the fluids past their mouths. Though Christopher Lloyd gave a very convincing performance, seemingly swirling some of the "water" (without any wax in it) around in his mouth, before letting it all run out onto his shirt.

On the other hand, there is no reason to believe that either he or Damon Wayans actually held the very same original hot lava lamp bottle they just picked up in the previous shot. It could have been switched for a bottle with safe contents.

But what would look real enough and could be gulped down like that?

Remember, that cinema itself was considered an abomination and the bane and doom of Theatre and Opera. That Talkies, Technicolor, Widescreen, IMAX, 3D and even such simple techniques as overdubbing, double exposure and whatnot, have been condemned and protested in their infancy. (Once the flabberghasted audience realized they were tricks)

I mean, I enjoy me a good witchhunt like everybody else, but how can Avatar and other such CGI-Schlockfests (most of the Marvel Multiverse and anything done by Pixar, Dreamworks, Disney et al. ) be so successful, if we all hate the technology that made them possible? How many hypocrites can there be in a angry mob consenting audience?

Algorithms have long since replaced the team animating the single hairs in Paddington's Pelt. But even if they still existed ... it would hardly be Jack from Ohio and Jill from Newark.

How many of the "15,000 people involved in making this movie" can't even afford to go see it or wouldn't understand the language, let alone know the background of the characters?

So, what's your perspective?

Is the Wonder-Woman-themed Lavalamp in the back for real? The topper looks like one of those red plastic cups from beer-pong and the base like a repurposed chicken wings bucket with a WW-Sticker on it.

I mean, geez, I honestly appologize to anybody who might actually own and love this doubtlessly collectible piece... but what was the company thinking when they made this? It is THEM who should appologize to you AND get a hundred lashes with a wet noodle.

Existing or not, that thing is everything that is wrong with the world and somebody had to say it.
