Reworked Horde Invasions

In the next Invictus update, the Yuezhi, Sakan and Wusun invasions have been completely reworked. I just shared this post in the Discord but wanted to put it here as well, since there has been some discussion about this recently.

Alright, so first things first; all mission trees in the invasion corridor have been looked at and permanent province modifiers have been added where it makes sense, so if you lose an Alexandria to the steppe nomads, you won't lose the modifiers you spent hours working to unlock.

All three invasions will now spawn along the yellow line in the first image - no more randomly appearing armies in your heartland, no more bordergore enclaves spawning out of the blue. Also, your capital is safe from being seized if it happens to be in the yellow line zone...no more cheap and dirty events stealing your main city.

Second image shows how you will be able to form Yuezhi if you are one of the countries in the Tarim Basin that receives refugee pops once the off-map Xiongnu crush the Yuezhi. This peacefully settles the invasion and allows you to go on to form Kushan, if you'd like.

Third image shows something that is available for all three of these invasions; the country being attacked by the horde will now have the option to tag switch. Because the invasions are mid-to-late game, they have been slightly buffed and should still be an annoying thing to deal with, but not as bad as they were before!

Something I didn't mention on Discord is that the invasions are a little more staggered, so you won't have the Saka invading ten days (!) after the Yuezhi launch their own invasions. Large-scale movements of displaced peoples take some time, after all, so the week or two you would have seen before has been replaced with a more appropriate year or two.

Chronicles of Omniluxia Dev Diary/Call for Testers

Hello everyone, it's Zorgo on behalf of the entire team, with a brand new look at what's been going on with the total fantasy conversion mod for Chronicles of Omniluxia (Steam). It has been roughly two years since an update has come out and we are getting very close to releasing the next one, but that brings us to the point of today's post; we are looking for some testers to help us with balancing and fine tuning some of the new gameplay systems and mission trees we have made. We have been running tests ourselves but are looking for some feedback before we release, so if you are interested, here is a link to our Discord server.

And before I get the ball rolling with today's update, I am going to share one more link - Chronicles of Omniluxia Wiki . The wiki has been recently updated and is being refreshed alongside the content we are adding to the game, making it the definitive source of the world's lore. There is a staggering amount of backstory that has shaped the map and the relationships between nations, and you could easily spend hours reading about the important characters that exist at game start or the recent history of a certain country, so have fun checking it out.

We are planning to write some more dev diaries in the near future that will take an in-depth look at all of the new content we have added to the mod, but instead of doing a deep dive today, we are going to tease a bunch of random new content. Let's start with missions. The new update will have two kinds of missions; 1) custom mission trees available to certain tags, like the brand-new tree for the Nazani Empire, and 2) new types of generic mission trees available to cultures/governments/characters with special traits. And by generic trees, I mean trees that are like “The Pearl of…” and “The Matter of…” missions in vanilla, those repeating missions that focus on a region or province and randomly spawn once you have met some criteria. We will take a quick peek at the new generic “Trade Mission” that will send you and your fleets to friendly foreign ports, where adventures and profits await you if you’re lucky.

So what does a trade mission need? A friendly-ish country within diplomatic range that has a port with a market. From this thinnest of foundations, you’ll assign an envoy responsible for taking care of every aspect of the trip from that point forward; someone who is in charge of establishing good relations with your trading partner, who will exchange gifts with the local officials and rulers, a person making sure that the paperwork has been filled out and contracts have been insured. This envoy will become the admiral of a fleet that has to dock in a foreign port with a market, with randomized events to describe what happens there during this trade meeting, and then once your cargoes have been loaded aboard your ships, you’ll sail home to count your profits.

It's very hot in the deserts of Baetep this time of year, so be sure to dress accordingly.

You will have to provision your fleet, negotiate harbor rights, and physically travel to a foreign market, where event chains and other surprises await you every time.

Whether or not you want to establish permanent trading connections will be up to you.

Another fun generic tree will be available to migratory tribes, where you will be encouraged to do the very thing that you are known for - migrating and pillaging the lands of your neighbors. Only now, you will have a dynamic incentive for doing so, one that rewards you for being on the move.

There are also generic missions available to you if your ruler has certain traits, which has been fun to play around with - the idea of mission trees for characters instead of mission trees for nations. Vampires will be able to terrorize provinces that they own in order to boost their own powers. The second row of their mission tree has ten terrible tasks that you can unleash upon the people, but you can only pick three before the other ones bypass, so choose wisely - some tasks will boost certain traits and skills, but the maluses are usually added to the province’s capital.

Your people will hate you, but they will fear you...

Let’s move on to two systems that are interconnected; the items system and the city system. Characters in the game, including your ruler and people of importance like governors and generals, will be able to equip items that can be found on adventure chains and/or purchased at markets.

https://preview.redd.it/6q13bm9v3feh1.png?width=484&format=png&auto=webp&s=ca81243241beacbfb968f7f6376ebcc7582ebc7d

The new button next to the character will reveal their inventory. Players will be able to visit certain buildings, like markets, and interact with them. There is so much I want to say about the item system right now, but we will have to wait. To tide you over, here is a quick list of things that are currently implemented.

Each culture produces its own items, and the better the “quality” of the city - the more buildings it has, the more pops it has, the more civilization level it has etc etc etc - the better the quality of the items in the stores. You can visit the cities of friendly countries and shop in their markets and buy their items. Want to play tall and just travel around to different cities and see what their markets are rolling? You can absolutely do so. Each culture will make items that benefit their levy composition, so elven countries with a lot of archers will sell items that benefit archer troops, fighting in forest terrain, and so on.

AI Grombar conquered the Nazani Empire with items he equipped on himself. Every year, an AI character will travel to its best market, and if it can afford to buy personal equipment, then it will.

Not every city can be visited - it will need some sort of building that you can interact with, but if it does, then you'll see this icon appear next to a character that is physically there. All sorts of cool interactions are possible now; you can send a governor from the borders of your empire to your capital city to train at the Magic Academy, or you can visit a tavern in a foreign city and gamble away your gold there. You can even visit hostile or occupied cities - you might be at war with your neighbor, but when passing through their lands, you can barter for food outside of their walls at higher prices. There's a lot you can do!

Dynamic localization for each city you visit, whether it is a backwater or a world city.

Buildings you construct will give your characters flavorful things to do.

As I mentioned, the AI will equip themselves with the best weapons and armor that they can afford, and the AI can also use the same magic systems I am about to show you. A quick AI shout out, since we are teasing AI stuff - Anbeeld has graciously allowed us to use his Advanced AI improvements for Invictus in Omniluxia, so the AI is a much different animal than it once was. We have already seen greatly improved AI behavior in our own tests and can't wait for everyone to see how much better it is. But now it's time to reveal another new mechanic; the magic system.

The blue magic icon next to \"Visit City\" allows me to cast spells on this unit, the blue icon below shows what spells are currently active on this unit.

You’ll notice the three new icons that are now next to our character; Inventory, City, Magic. A character can Study Magic via a character interaction (build a Magic Academy first!) and train to unlock new spells in different schools of magic. Four schools of magic, four tiers of spells to learn as you rise through the ranks. It can take between 17-25 years in game to learn all of the spells, and that's only if you don't die or something crazy happens to you.

Different schools of magic to learn, plus ancestor or folk magic that races have, and Divine Blessings are national spells that you can cast over your entire realm

There are a lot of spells to learn. Spells can be cast in battle, in sieges, on provinces, on characters, on yourself, and even on land and sea units.

Below we can see the updated battle interface, with icons allowing us to cast spells against the enemy unit or on our own troops. If you have items that you can use in battle or if you feel like equipping something fancy, like an artifact, you will have the option to do so…but keep in mind that if your ruler dies while wielding an artifact, it’s lost forever, and there is a 25% chance that the enemy army will find it themselves. More details in a future dev diary.

And there is something else I want to show you, a new continent in the east, a new world with new religions, races, military traditions…but this is only a teaser developer diary, I'm supposed to be asking for testers to come play all of this content and help us polish it up. All of this awesome stuff needs to be fine-tuned before its imminent release, so please let us know if you are willing to do so - just send us a message in the Discord and we will set you up. Thanks for reading and talk soon!

Not every part of the eastern continent is playable, but there are a lot of interesting and cool things happening over in the new world.

Thank You Robin

Hard to believe this journey is at its end, but I will remain forever grateful that we had this podcast to tell us the story of the Eastern Roman Empire. Not only did it complete the arc established by Duncan's THOR, which is quite the accomplishment in and of itself, but it proudly stood on its own two legs, with its own unique identity and tone - much like our beloved ERE.

I will certainly miss the interviews with various experts in their fields and my drives for work will certainly be a lot less exciting, but I wanted to salute and thank Robin for the many years of excellent educational content.
