Risks of flea and tick medications

My vet prescribed nexgard combo as a preventative for my cat that goes on walks. After reading that it can cause severe neurological symptoms in cats with the mdr1 gene I’m too afraid to give it to him. I know that basically any medication has rare side effects but 1-4% of cats having the gene feels like too big of a chance when it could kill him, but I’m also really scared that he will get a tick without me noticing and get sick from it. He has a neurological condition (bengal cat polyneuropathy, but he is a dsh) that from what I’ve researched shouldn’t predispose him to nexgard side effects but it makes me even more anxious about giving it to him because nexgard says to use with caution in animals with a history of neurological issues.

I’m taking him to visit family in a wooded area that I was hoping to take him on walks in, so I’m really worried about him getting a tick, but I’m so scared to give him the nexgard. I want to get him tested for mdr1 but I don’t have time before the trip. Has anyone here actually had a cat have a severe reaction to nexgard combo? How many cats have you treated with it? I have given it to my other cat with no issues before I knew about mdr1, but I hate that there’s no way to know if it could hurt him without genetic testing :(

Help- brown diatom and green spot algae taking over plants

For a few months now I’ve been having problems with algae covering the leaves of my pennywort and it keeps getting worse. The third picture is from a few months ago and since then they’ve gotten much worse. My tank is around 6 months old, a 20 gallon stocked with 9 kuhli loaches and a bunch of neocardinia.

For a few months now I’ve been having a lot of plant issues. The plants and especially the frogbit used to grow really well but for a few months now they don’t, aligning kind of with when the algae started and a little after I got the shrimp. The tank was doing very well when it was just loaches and I’m not sure why it’s not now. My nitrates are around 5ppm.

I tried lowering the light from 10 hours to 6 hours and decreasing the intensity, but it didn’t help. I tried fertilizing more and it got worse. I stopped fertilizing and it didn’t improve. I tried doing less water changes in case it was the low nitrates but it made it worse, so I’m going to start doing once a week again.

I found some of the driftwood outside and I was told to boil all of it for half an hour to kill bacteria and help it sink. This was a huge mistake and now the over boiled driftwood constantly sheds brown dust. I thought it would get better over time but it hasn’t, filter floss turns almost black within a week from all the particles. I’m not sure if this has anything to do with the algae but I thought I’d mention it.

What should I do?

Pup died of hunger at 30%

My almost young hunters pup died of hunger at 30%, is that normal? He started loosing a lot of health despite eating ground squirrels and died not long after. I thought pups that age had to be lower than that to die?

I was using the hunting camp rendezvous and thought that the hunting season wouldn’t start until after growing pups, so I had to emergency move after it changed to fall. I thought he would be ok till I made it to a new one.
