TapeDesk got a big update, now figuring out where to take it next

Hi!

Three weeks ago i posted here about TapeDesk (my 4-track tape-style recorder), and with the feedback i got i've just made a big update:

  • AUv3: it now runs as a plugin inside AUM, Logic, etc. this was the most requested one.
  • load other apps' AUv3 effects into the chain.
  • import audio.
  • 4 new effects (CRUSH, HAZE, WOBBLE, SHIMMER).
  • record up to 12 inputs at once (with a USB interface).
  • dark mode.

and a bunch more: clear track, reverse, loops, undo/redo, plus a lot of work on stability.

im a solo dev with a 8-to-5 job and i do this for fun. im not trying to compete with the serious DAWs, i just want to grow it little by little, based on what you tell me. so here's the (super vague) backlog im thinking about right now:

  1. make it more self-contained, so you can build a whole song inside it, OP-1 style (load and play instruments, probably building the synth engines on top of Plaits).
  2. add a "play" screen to mess with what you've recorded, live: retrigger, speed, punch-in style FX.

what do you think?

big thanks to everyone who gave feedback 🙏

I always wanted the OP-1 tape on the OP-XY, so I built one

Always wanted an OP-1, never got one, so I built my own tape 4-track for the phone.

I've always loved the OP-1 and that whole tape-sketch way of working. I make most of my stuff on the sofa, so a while back I started building the tape recorder I wanted.

TapeDesk's a 4-track. the thing I cared about most was that it should actually sound like tape, not a clean recording with some hiss on top, so I wrote all the saturation and tape behaviour by hand until it felt right. you drag the speed and the pitch slides with it like a real deck, the delay wobbles the way tape does, and what you hear is what gets printed to the take. there's a live looper, a mixer per track, and it syncs to other gear over Link or MIDI.

I put a lot into how it looks and feels too, honestly that's half of why I enjoy using it.

I'm happy with the outcome, and I've got more ideas planned for it!
