I just released my 2nd comedy special, Good Son, on YouTube. I’m genuinely proud of it and put real work into it, anyone could watch without paying a dime. Then Google looked at my ads and said “nope.”

The reason? A joke. A joke that mentions Donald Trump.

Not a threat. Not misinformation. Just saying his name. I attach some screenshots below so you guys can see but according to Google’s new guidelines if you mention the president’s name, your video gets automatically added to this election advertising category and requires further verification or you have to re-upload and remove the mention. You know, the thing comedians have been doing since the beginning of time? talking about powerful people? Ya that thing. That’s now a problem.

So instead of a proper launch with paid promotion like we planned, we’re out here doing it the old fashioned way, word of mouth, person to person, the way comedy used to spread before algorithms decided what was acceptable.

I’m not here to be dramatic about it. It’s honestly a little funny in a “you can’t make this up” kind of way. But I also think it’s worth talking about, because if comedians can’t even advertise material that references public figures, that’s a weird road we’re going down.
