First time at a game festival and our platformer made top 3!

First time at a game festival and our platformer made top 3!

This is The Lost Froglins, a pixel art side-scrolling platformer my wife Annlyn and I have been working on. The starting question was basically: what if Vampire Survivors was a platformer? So we built one to find out.

You play as Koko, a reluctant hero on a mission to rescue 100 baby froglins. After being rescued, they follow you around and auto attack enemies for you.

Quick context on us: Annlyn and I are both ex-feature animators (Nimona, Ice Age, Hoppers), and this is our first indie game together.

The photo is from last weekend at Capital Creative Showcase in Sacramento, our first time ever showing the game in public. It made top 3 finalists for Exhibitors' Choice, which is crazy!

A Steam playtest is coming soon. A wishlist helps us more than you might think at this stage: https://thelostfroglins.com/steam

Happy to answer anything about the game, the design choices, or the showcase!

3rd place at our first ever game festival, and I still can't believe it!

That's me and my wife Annlyn at Capital Creative Showcase last weekend in Sacramento. Our first time ever showing the game in public.

We're both ex-feature animators (Hoppers, Nimona) and we've been building our first indie game together for a while now. We went in with zero expectations, honestly just hoping a few people would give it a shot.

The game made top 3 finalists for Exhibitors' Choice out of the whole showcase. We were floored.

The game is called The Lost Froglins. The pitch: Vampire Survivors as a side-scrolling platformer. You rescue 100 baby froglins, they follow you, and they fight for you. The bigger your swarm, the wilder the chaos.

A Steam playtest is coming soon. If you want to follow along, a wishlist genuinely helps us more than you might think:

Top 3 finalist at my first ever showcase! Can't believe my action roguelite did this well

Last weekend I drove up to Sacramento for Capital Creative Showcase, my first time showing the game at a public event. I'm Manu, and I'm making The Lost Froglins with my wife Annlyn. We're both ex-feature animators (Nimona, Ice Age, Spies in Disguise, Hoppers) building our first indie game together.

Pixel art platformers aren't exactly hot on Steam right now, so I went in with low expectations for how this would land. The game made top 3 finalists for Exhibitors' Choice out of the whole showcase! Crazy!

The pitch I keep landing on is Vampire Survivors as a side-scrolling platformer. You play as Koko, a reluctant hero who has to rescue 100 lost froglins. Once rescued, they follow you and auto-attack for you.

Here is the Steam page if you want to take a look. Wishlists genuinely help us a lot at this stage: https://thelostfroglins.com/steam

The Game:

  • Swarm as weapon. Different froglin types have different flight patterns, so the bigger your swarm, the wilder the bullet patterns.
  • Companion combat. Baby Bongo is a ball and chain you swing manually, and he auto-upgrades as the froglin count grows.
  • Handcrafted levels, procedural placement. Levels are designed by hand, but enemies and coins are randomized each run.
  • Roguelite meta progression. Coins persist between runs, and you equip 3 shop items per run.
  • Bosses with personality. First one is Rospone, a theatrical toad whose stated goal is to eat your froglins.

A Steam playtest is coming soon, with the demo to follow. I'm happy to answer any questions about the game or the showcase.
