It's coming!

Today, instead of writing, I am hopping extatically around the writing room. I woke up to the shipping notification. My BYOK is coming.

Sure, it will be a while before it reaches Ireland, where I live, but still... it....is... coming!

Thank you Nick and the team. Looking forward to starting my days by rushing to the writing room, coffee in hand, to face the blank BYOK screen with the blinking cursor....

FiiO FT1 vs Meze Audio 99 Classic (v.2)

Dear all, could you offer some advice? I have a bunch of open backs (planar and dynamic) which I love, but I am also looking to add some closed backs to my stack. I narrowed it down to the two mentioned in the title, and now I am stuck.

So, could you advise: Is there much difference between them (aside the price, of course :) ?

I prefer warmer sound than pure neutral. I listen to a wide range of music, but these would be mostly for prog and small ensamble jazz, late night listening, usually lossless audio, some vinyl.

The first instinct is, go for the premium ones (Meze). But I wonder, what if FT1 sound similar, (especially important since they cost more than half less)?

Thanks for any help.

BYOK and GDrive

Hey guys, quick question before I jump in and order: does BYOK support other sync options apart from the Studio, like GDrive? If so, any comments on how reliable the sync is?

My recent jazz obsession: Miho Hazama - Frames

Hey all, I don't know about you but I often dread modern big band records. Perhaps I just haven’t been that lucky but the ones I've happened to hear seemed to focus just a touch too much on musical acrobatics (which the big band format makes so much possible, after all), or rely on the sheer power of a big band sound to make an impact.

But there’s one record I came across recently, purely by chance actually (it’s released under the artist’s name, not a big band, so I never discounted it as being such) that made my jaw drop, and I thought I'd share it. It’s just so good. So interesting. Enjoyable.

The record is Frames by Miho Hazama (see, no mention of a big band in the name :), featuring her six compositions performed by Danish Radio Big Band and it ticks all the boxes for me: Interesting compositions, well thought-through arrangements, great playing (and great sound, too.)

It's still relatively new so in case you've missed it among other recent releases, I highly recommend listening to it.

I ended up writing a longer review if anyone's interested https://www.trueresaudio.com/reviews/miho-hazama-frames-review (but the above pretty much sums up what I feel about the album anyway.)

I’ve been quietly building a classical music magazine for serious listeners

Hi everyone,

I’ve been quietly building something that I thought people here might appreciate.

It’s called TrueResAudio, and it's a classical and jazz magazine built around music discovery: reviews, catalogue finds, release coverage, listening notes, and more for listeners who care about how recordings actually sound.

The idea came from years of jumping between forums, stores, reviews, streaming apps, and endless other resources trying to work out what was genuinely worth hearing, and which releases were actually worth spending time with.

TrueResAudio is my attempt to bring that kind of experience into one place.

It is intentionally small and editorial. No algorithmic recommendations, no AI, no affiliate-driven rankings, no attempt to cover everything. Just one person, me, listening carefully, writing honestly, and trying to point toward recordings that feel worth your time.

If you’re curious, it’s here: https://www.trueresaudio.com

Anyway, I finally decided to step away from the workbench and share the mag properly here.

I genuinely wonder what you think.

Great sounding recordings of piano trios with electric bass, specifically?

I've just finished listening to an amazing album by a Polish jazz band from the 80's (I think) - Extra Ball. It has this amazing, warm and slightly ringing sound of electric bass on it. It's not a trio, but I thought how wonderful such a thing must sound in a trio setting.

The thing is, I can't think of any such albums.

Any recommendations?

Thanks
