Play hard, nap harder!

Foggy had an awesome Sunday; chasing bugs, digging holes and snoozing in the sun. Followed by a whole evening nap on the pouffe.

As much as unsupervised outdoor time makes me nervous, being in the garden all day is her favourite thing ever!

Little Foggy feeling groggy

Our sweet girl caught a nasty virus at her spay appointment last month and has had a rough ride.

Recovered well from the surgery but has been under the weather with calcivirus and stomach upset ever since 💔

Although not quite herself, she’s still so lovely and affectionate. Dust kitties are the best!

Post-spay diarrhoea and calcivirus

Country: UK

Vet info: Vet has been seen twice, just diagnosed with calcivirus, ordered fecal sampling and meds for virus

Cat Age: 6mo female, vaccinated

Our cat was spayed on 11 August and has had diarrhoea every day since we finished the pain medication on the 5th day. She didn’t have the easiest time recovery-wise as she was extremely stressed by the recovery suit and caught calcivirus at the spay appointment with inflamed gums as the biggest symptom.

We are really struggling with the diarrhoea, in terms of managing our home and trying to not stress her out. She has full access to our home including bedroom, but has been getting poop on our bed and floor from her fur every single day. We’ve trimmed her, cleaned her the best we can but when she goes overnight, we can’t do anything to stop it.

If we close our bedroom, she goes nuts and gets really stressed and upset, which we’ve been advised by the vet to keep stress at a minimum. We’re just losing our minds waking up to mess each morning and washing sheets every day.

What on earth can we do? At this point, I’m terrified the diarrhoea will be chronic as it’s just not stopping and our vet doesn’t seem overly concerned. I don’t know how I can cope with this long term.

She’s okay otherwise; affectionate, playful, eating and drinking well.

How long did you keep your cat confined after spay surgery?

We had our 5.5mo kitten spayed and chipped on Tuesday, she's been recovering in our family bathroom since then with bed, blankets, food, water, litter, a few slow toys etc. After the first night, she's a bit more energetic but still slow, especially in the recovery suit. Eating and drinking fine, toileting with no trouble and a little playful.

She's very distressed about being confined, lots of crying, scratching at the door etc, so we're quite desperate to let her out and our vet was quite vague when I asked about when do to so. She'll have the suit on for the full 14 days and we don't have any other pets or children, so no trouble there.

When did you let your kitten/cat free from confinement? TIA! :-)

Well wishes for Foggy’s spay recovery!

Foggy had the dreaded spay appointment today and is fully equipped with the vets’ baby grow. She’s now snoozing in our makeshift recovery center (bathroom) in between yowling to be released. ♥️

The suit looks too small, but I think it’s just her insane fluff density…!

Is my single kitten happy?

We adopted a 9 week old kitten in May and she’s now 4.5mo old. She’s our only pet and my partner works from home, so she’s yet to be left alone longer than 3 hours.

I’ve since read up on here that kittens should be in pairs or they’ll be miserable, so I’m racked with guilt. We dote on her and make sure she’s always got toys and enrichment, managing about 45mins to 1hr of active playtime total throughout the day. My partner is firm on the ‘cats are independent’ team though… so that makes the situation slightly more difficult.

She shows signs of being a happy cat, high perky tail, eating/drinking/toileting normally, loves cuddles and shadows me, sleeps well and grooms, but perhaps is overgrooming. We cannot commit to another pet right now, especially as we have a small home, so only seeing advice to get another on here is driving me insane.

I’m hoping once she’s spayed next week, we can harness train her before she goes outside, which will help… but it’s making me feel really down. Any advice for the meantime?

-Edit-

Thank you all so, so much for all the wonderful comments, I definitely feel less anxious! She’s my first ever pet, so just trying my best to do a good job.

The sweetest, cuddliest girl!

Foggy’s 4.5 months and is the loveliest little thing, who greets me every morning with snuggles and biscuits. Her favourite thing is her (my) emotional support dressing gown!

Please keep baby dolls safe this summer!

Yesterday, I did some shopping and walked past a car parked in the parent and child parking space, which was there in the semi-empty car park before I arrived like 30 minutes prior.

Obviously didn’t think anything of it but glanced in the window walking past as it was a lovely sparkling new Range, to spot a baby strapped to a car seat with its face partially covered with a blanket.

It’s a heatwave in the UK and it was midday, so a good 31 degs. Panic ensues as I’m certain the baby must be slow cooking. No sign of the parent, so I call the police and they show up pretty much immediately.

Window is smashed and baby is retrieved… except it’s a Reborn doll, trussed up in a Mamas and Papas car seat wrapped in a blanket. Car is complete with a baby on board sign and window shades. Oof!

Mildly infuriating for me (but relieved), I’m sure extremely for the poor copper and definitely for the driver who is now windowless.

Should I get partial, full highlights or balayage? Or nothing!

I have below-shoulder-length, super-fine hair, which naturally is a mousy light brown and dyed to somewhat match. I’m dying to add some dimension and brightness with some form of highlights. Which method would suit lighter fine hair the best? Tia!

Kitten suckling!

Our 3mo kitten jumps down from her tree every morning to knead and suckle on me, with a specific affection for my Sainsbury’s dressing gown.

Weirdly I’m the chosen one and she’s never done it to my husband. I’ve never had cats before and so never seen anything like it, why do they do this?

Occassional litter tray issues with 13 week-old kitten

We brought home a female kitten almost a month ago who was litter trained well from the original owner; we had no accidents at all.

Potential causes?

  • We had a rocky start with her, as she came with fleas, so she and our home had to be treated, which was quite a stressful experience for everyone. It was several days of fumigating the home and moving her around while each room was treated, but still no accidents during that time.
  • We had to stay elsewhere for an event for a weekend two weeks ago, and my parents stayed at our house with her. They have visited often, so she's very comfortable with them. After this weekend is when she started peeing outside of the tray daily, on carpet and on doormats.

We've tried,

- Cleaning the litter tray more thoroughly as suggested by our vet, we have a stainless steel tray with soft wood pellets which turn to sawdust when wet; all sawdust and poop is removed immediately. We empty all pellets and wash the tray every week. Also just bought soft paper pellets to try next, as we've nearly finished the wood litter.

- Moving the litter tray where she is having the most accidents.

- Picking her up and putting her in the tray when she seems ready to go, this has worked and she's used the tray immediately

- Rewarding her with a favourite treat after she uses the tray

- Putting her in the tray after she's had an accident (doesn't help; she jumps straight out!)

She's using the tray for pee and poop with no troubles overnight, having the accidents in the mornings after we're up and in the evenings, which makes us worry that she's bored and doing it for attention. She's the only pet in the house but rarely left alone, my husband is full-time wfh.

We're exhausted and totally thrown on what to do next. She's seeing a vet next week for her second vaccine, and they'll check for a UTI in case that's why she's suddenly taken a turn.

Any advice or suggestions are welcome!

An update (and a question!)

Previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/CatsUK/s/uX1YvvTiiU

We listened to the advice from the previous post and continued to comb our 9 week old kitten for fleas but letting her roam freely around half of our house as she doesn’t do well alone. However, we found about 6-7 fleas (one was mammoth) on Saturday morning.

We have taken her to the vets for her first checkup and vaccines, they prescribed her Credelio oral tablet on top of the spot treatment the original owner gave last week. They also gave us two bottles of Indorex, so we have spent the weekend deep cleaning, washing everything on high, fogging the rooms and our cars. I’ve never been so exhausted!

We’ve tried to make this weekend as stress-free as possible for her, but between the combing, moving her things whilst we spray the rooms, travelling to the vet etc, I don’t doubt it’s been hard for her.

My question is, what steps can we take to build the trust back so she’s comfortable with us again? Is it safe (flea-wise) to let her roam freely now that she’s taken Credelio?

We’ll continue the laundry and hoovering daily, so I’m hoping with the Indorex and tablet we’re near the end of this. I don’t think we’re going to attempt to bath her (we have her a gentle wash in the bath with kitten shampoo on the 3rd day she was here) as she’s too stressed out and our vet didn’t suggest it. I’m just so sad that her first week here had to be so unexpectedly stressful, I had not prepared for this flea situation at all.

A 9-week-old kitten brought home this weekend; totally overwhelmed. Advice please!

We brought home a lovely British Longhair mix kitten at the weekend; she is only 9.5 weeks old. We have spent a long time preparing and researching, but now she's here we're totally overwhelmed and lost. I know everyone will suggest two kittens, and as much as we wanted to we can only afford the one, unfortunately. My husband is WFH, so she'll always have company.

We've tried to gradually introduce her to new areas of the house at her pace, with a base set-up in a bathroom with her bed, a few toys, litter tray, food and water fountain etc. She is very curious about the other rooms but hides for hours and is skittish when she's in there.

We also discovered on the drive home that she had an adult flea on her and was filthy with flea poop and larvae. Panic ensues. We wait until the 3rd day when she's more settled to comb her through and bathe her. Bathing was stressful, but she seems much more comfortable after we removed the flea dirt. We haven't seen any fleas since, and she isn't scratching.

This makes us hesitant to introduce her to carpeted rooms/living room with our sofa until this is resolved. This is really upsetting as she desperately wants to be with us, but we're hesitant to have her with us in the other rooms whilst the flea issue is prevalent. She has a vet visit booked for this Friday.

At the moment, she is sleeping in her base room with the door closed from 11pm to 7am. She is comfortable and seems to feel totally safe in there compared to anywhere else.

She's now eating, drinking and enjoying treats on the 3rd day of being here, but has had a poop accident on our carpet this morning.

She is my first pet and right now I feel like a terrible cat parent, so unsure if I'm doing everything wrong and upsetting her further. But the flea issue has really thrown me, and I'm not sure what to do. Any advice on helping her settle would be really great.

*Edit* Thank you all for the really helpful and thoughtful comments, feeling much less stressed today! 😊

I’m attending a wedding this summer and the dress code states formal and is being held in a luxury country manor… so, it’ll be fancy!

I have a thrifted Anthropologie Shara midi-dress which I love and have worn at a summer party but not a wedding, especially a formal one. I’m 5ft so the dress sits almost ankle length on me.

Could I get away with wearing this and what could I pair it with to make it work it’s best? I favour boho-style clothing, so formal events are a struggle!

Edit-

Heard loud and clear, thank you! Does anyone have any suggestions for a long sleeve, floaty dress that would be formal please? 🙏🏼 I have full body tattoos that I prefer to be covered for events, so long sleeves are a must.
