Lockview is closing and Akron is gonna be a lot less cheesy

Super bummed to come across this — their grilled cheese slapped, as did their beer selection.

I remember reading recently that they were struggling, but it seems like they already closed? Downtown lost another good one.

Strawberry cheesecake brownies (subtitle: Sally, you’ve done it again, you minx)

I wanted to use up a block of expiring cream cheese and came across this recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction. I didn’t have freeze dried raspberries and subbed strawberry jam for raspberry since I didn’t want to make an extra trip to the store, but I’ll bet the tartness of the raspberry would be even better. I’d also add a little more jam than the quarter cup called for next time, since not every piece had a detectable amount.

These were great cooled yesterday but legendary after a night in the fridge.

Visitor questions: Boonshoft and Yellow Springs

We (myself, spouse, 4.5 year old, and baby) are planning a mini-vacation to the area in a couple weeks. We’re trying not to be overly rigid with an itinerary (see above re: kids), but I did have two questions:

  1. Should we plan on the Boonshoft Museum taking most of a day? Between the planetarium, zoo, and other exhibits, it seems like it would be a long outing, but if not, I’d love suggestions of other family-friendly stuff to do in the area!

  2. Is it worth stopping by Yellow Springs with kids? I haven’t been in 10+ years and used to love all the little hippie shops and galleries, but I don’t know if there’s enough family-friendly stuff to do. We’re also wondering if stuff will be open on Sunday if that’s when we’re able to stop by. (Young’s Jersey Farm is definitely on our must-visit list regardless!)

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Reddit!

New receipt scanner

This scanner was installed in my local store within the last few days. I’m guessing it’s meant to combat shoplifting? I’d rather this than the outright removal of self scanning like I’ve heard about in other stores, but I’m anticipating it’ll be a cluster at busy times of day. The gate was open so it doesn’t appear to be fully live/functional yet. Has anyone else seen these?

Humblebrag: baked these while my newborn napped

Between a difficult pregnancy and a now-11-week-old, I’ve been out of the macaron game for awhile, so I’m really proud of pulling these off. I used to love experimenting with different flavors, and getting back into it helps me feel a bit more like myself again.

These are tres leches inspired — shells are flavored with vanilla butter emulsion and some cinnamon, and the filling is a Russian buttercream to capture that sweetened condensed milk flavor.
