First real flush is starting

Pics 1 & 2: Bolero (smells absolutely divine, so many more blooms to come)
Pics 3 & 4: Moonlight in Paris (pretty but the blooms last like 2 days and not a huge fan of the fragrance tbh)
Pic 5: St. Tropez about to bloom for the first time!

Still waiting on my peach and apricot drift to open up, the peach drift has at least 75 buds. Can’t wait.

Help! My new David Austins look horrible.

Pic 1: Bathsheba
Pic 2: Strawberry Hill
Pic 3: Desdemona
Pic 4: James Galway

Help me! Four David Austins arrived last week. They were listed as being in 3 gallon containers, however arrived with roots wrapped in paper and that wrapped in plastic, with only a tiny bit of soil (don’t even get me started after spending $400 on the plants plus shipping). Unfortunately they arrived while I was on a weekend trip so they were placed outside in shade, still with their roots wrapped, for three days. By the time I got home to get them planted (two days ago), they looked pretty bad, with Strawberry Hill and James Galway by far the worst.

I literally potted them as soon as I got home. High quality mix of potting soil, Sunshine Mix 4, orchid bark, worm castings, compost, Rose-Tone (all 9 of my other roses are thriving in this mix). Soaked them immediately and am keeping them well-watered at all times. Doesn’t help we’re in the middle of an insane heat wave (Detroit/6b) - today is 100F.

I thought they would perk up a bit once planted/hydrated, but they look even worse now. I have them in dappled shade so as not to dry out the branches that are still green/alive (however even these ones are feeling pretty rubbery) and just allow them to soak in as much moisture as possible.

However I reached out to the seller/company, sent her these pics, and she is telling me they need full sun immediately. Normally I would trust someone who sells roses for a living but I’m hesitant to trust her on anything after being told they were coming in 3 gallon pots and receiving them bare root. Full sun in this condition in this heat feels like a death sentence to me but maybe I’m wrong?

What do I do? Do they need more sun like she said? Or should I bring them inside until the heat wave passes? Do I cut off all the clearly dead growth now or wait and hope that they perk up, then assess the damage?

Overwinter containers in an unheated plastic shed or against the heated house?

First year with roses. We’re currently renting so it’s all containers for now. They’re in big 15-ish gallon thick plastic containers (20-22” diameter). Obviously it’s a time away but I’m trying to plan ahead for the winter as I don’t want to lose any of these girls. I’m in 6b - Ferndale, MI (just north of Detroit).

My options are:
-Put them all in one of those warehouse store plastic/vinyl “sheds” which we already have in our backyard. It has two very small skylights. It’s all the way at the back of the yard, so definitely no residual heat from the house, but they’d be protected from wind and I’m guessing it would maybe stay a few degrees warmer in there during the day.
-Line them up against the north side of the house in an enclosure made of chicken wire, piled up high with leaves. (East, west, and south sides wouldn’t work). They’d get some residual heat from the house but otherwise totally open to the elements.
-OR we could bring them into the basement, which has one heating vent but we could keep it closed. Basement stays in the 50s in the winter

Threw back out, have been nearly immobile for 3+ days, please help

I (36m) lift weights/exercise 3-5 times a week and keep my core strong and my body pretty well stretched, so it’s been a very long time since I threw my back out, and it’s never been nearly this bad. I must have tweaked it while doing split squats this past Wednesday, but I didn’t notice anything wrong. Slept in our guest bedroom that night on a mattress that is softer than I like, and immediately knew when I got out of bed that something was wrong. Hurt to put my socks on and had stabbing pains from random movements throughout the day. By Friday morning, I had to take off work and have basically been immobile since (it’s now Sunday).

It’s concentrated in my lower back right above my tail bone/at my waistline. There’s no shooting pain into my legs or numbness. Just a constant aching pain that becomes stabbing when I walk, bend over, or make really any type of real movement. It’s to the point where I am actually moaning in pain during any real type of movement.

I’ve iced it. I’m using a heating pad on and off throughout the day and forcing myself to get up and walk around the house a bit every 30-60 minutes. Taking Tylenol and Aleve every 6 hours. Resting. Hydrating. Nothing is helping. Every morning I wake up and it’s either just as bad or worse. I’m literally laying in a reclined position right now with two pillows under my legs and the heating pad on my back, and it’s still throbbing/aching. I don’t know if it’s because it hurts to contract my core (horrible), but I have also been completely backed up this entire time and have not had a BM in over 72 hours. That has never happened in my entire life. Maybe TMI but it literally hurts something awful even just to push a fart out 😂

Hobbling to an urgent care sounds like torture right now, and I’m hesitant to put the effort into going because I feel like they’ll just prescribe NSAIDs and rest anyway.

What can I do? What am I not doing? Should I try to get muscle relaxers through an online urgent care visit? How much longer can this possibly last?

New to roses. I had no idea they could smell like THIS

My Bolero (pictured) is my first fragranced rose to bloom, and wow, I’m blown away by the scent. I guess I’ve only ever encountered standard flower shop roses with the classic rose scent. From the descriptions I’ve read online, Bolero normally has at least some classic rose fragrance, but this lady smells like straight up lemonheads, and it’s STRONG. I’m in love.

Also have two St. Tropez, a Poseidon (still on its way), and a Midnight in Paris (one fat bud I’m checking on way too often lol) who haven’t bloomed yet, but I can’t wait to experience all the different smells. Makes growing roses so much more exciting.

Post a pic you took of your absolute favorite rose + the variety

Just getting into roses and I’m curious to see everyone’s photos of your favorites type in your garden. Pictured is my first and only Bolero bloom, not even fully open and already smells amazing. She has like 7 more buds so I’m very excited to watch her for the next couple weeks. Currently also have two red knockouts, St. Tropez, and Moonlight in Paris, but besides the knockouts, the Bolero is the only one to put out a bloom so far. Still waiting on a peach drift, apricot drift, and one more St. Tropez to be delivered next week. Growing all in containers until we buy a house in the next year or two.

How much do your Newfies eat?

My bub is a rather petite 105lbs and my vet has always advised me to keep him skinny enough that you can feel his ribs a bit. He only eats 4 cups of Purina One per day, plus usually one 6-inch beef stick treat and fish oil. He gets either a good walk or fetch until he’s exhausted every day so he burns a fair amount of calories too. I feel like I’ve always heard stories of Newfies eating tons of food (like 6-8 cups a day). Does he just have a fast metabolism, or is that largely a myth?

Should I risk it with a super green somatic therapist?

I’m dealing with anxiety that manifests as muscle spasms and pain in my neck and back. Somatic therapy seems like a great fit for me, but I’m not familiar with it at all. I found a clinic and just had my first appointment. My therapist was super nice and definitely eager to help, however she is “very new” to somatic therapy, and even in her own words, she said that we would be “learning together.” She’s also a LCSW, and I’m not sure if that’s preferred for somatic therapy or if you want an actual clinical psychologist or some other type of therapist. I’m going to be missing two hours of work every week for this, it is expensive, and then obviously above all else, the most important thing for me is actually getting better, so I’m not sure what I should do. Would you risk it and move forward with her or would you seek a new therapist with more specific somatic experience under their belt?

Retatrutide is actually crazy

I’ve (36m) been what I guess you would call microdosing Reta (1-1.5mg/week) for 8 weeks and have gone from 195 to 182 literally without trying. I was already in a great lifting and cardio habit for at least six months but no matter how many calories I burned, I was still stuck around 20% BF. Dare I say since starting the Reta I have actually kind of slacked a bit in my exercise (like, 3x/week vs 5) yet my body recomp and fat loss have been truly insane. This may be taboo on this forum but I haven’t even changed my diet…like it’s actually pretty shit. Literally had McDonalds breakfast today and a couple days ago ate multiple donuts and other stuff from Dunkin. The only way I get enough protein is through a massive whey isolate shake every day. I still snack, just probably less in terms of portions (which I don’t even consciously realize). Yet I now have a six pack and can see my jaw line. It’s absolutely wild to me the effect this drug seems to have on your actual metabolism and insulin, regardless of diet. I haven’t looked this cut since I was pretty strict keto which was 12-13 years ago. Only side effect for me was poor sleep on injection days but that only lasted the first few weeks. And I now only poop every two days (previously I had a BM every morning) which honestly is a bit disturbing to me but that’s the only thing. I’ve also noticed higher heart rate when exercising which I would assume has something to do with the increased fat loss as well. The heart palpitations I used to get at night while trying to sleep are gone. There may be a tiny bit of anhedonia but I have ADHD and have always struggled with that in certain areas of my life so it’s hard to tell. Overall I rarely feel like I’m “on” anything at all. And as someone who is genetically predisposed to high cholesterol and high blood pressure, I feel like I’m doing myself a service just for those reasons alone. It’s all just wild. I feel like it’s a real life cheat code.

I love my curls but they’re pretty delicate and when my hair is cut short, they’re gone. What kind of cut do I ask for to keep this general “crown of curls” look but shorter and more tailored?

Constant physical tension from anxiety. Has anything helped you?

I have generalized and social anxiety and unfortunately it manifests very physically for me. I have muscle tension in my neck, shoulders, and upper back all the time (to the point my neck is like, permanently messed up), my resting heartrate tends to be very high, I’m basically in fight or flight all the time.

The only thing I’ve ever taken that has given me relief from the physical tension and neck/back stiffness and pain is Xanax. Which obviously isn’t a sustainable solution.

Has anyone had any luck successfully treating physical anxiety symptoms like this? I’m planning on asking my doctor about Buspar next week, however I’ve read that paradoxically it can also cause neck stiffness soooo. Seems like kind of a gamble.
