Using 17.5K Atmos vs 22K BA

Trying to get the group thought on this.

I have 470K Atmos in my account as well as BILT Palladium with 190K points and BILT Platinum and I also have Alaska Summit card.

I also have 176K BA (from the Kate Spade deal, got them for $705 of stuff we bought) as well as > 1.5 million in both Amex and Chase each, so easier to top off.

I’m saving AA flights to Hawaii for Spring Break next year from California. I found several dates with saver Y space, Alaska is 17.5K but I have Summit so no partner fee and fully refundable. However I’m very protective of Alaska miles.

BA is 22K and if I cancel I lose the $5.60 but honestly not that big a deal.

Cash prices right now are $885 a person so Alaska would be close to 2.5cpp while BA would be around 2cpp.

Metro + Car was faster than just a car

I’m stunned. I never thought I’d have this happen in LA.

I live in Glendale off the 5 and work in Downey off the 5. Not very transit friendly so I drive. My wife was taking some family visiting from out of town to the Petersen and LACMA with our toddler. I decided to meet them after finishing a half day at work. Rather than drive, I drove from work in Downey to Lincoln/Cypress Station near the 110/5 and took the A line to Union Station to the D line to Wilshire/Fairfax. First time on the D and it was less than 30 minutes after parking my car to get to the museums.

Here’s the kicker — we decided to leave around 3 PM to head home and my wife asked if I could take our 3 year-old on the train since he loves riding trains whenever we travel. So with a toddler in my arms, I took the D back to Union Station back to the A back to my parked car, then drove up to Glendale.

It took 43 minutes at 3pm. My wife and her family (without the time to put toddler in the car seat) needed 45 minutes.

Some notes:
- for some reason my round trip counted as a transfer on my TAP card so I only paid $1.75 although it should’ve been $3.50
- when I rode from Union Station on the D, I was surprised to see that they stopped the train for a few minutes to clean the floors before letting people on. Never seen that mid-day.
- I did pick up my toddler and jog/lightly run when I saw screens show trains were approaching but in general we still waited 1-2 more minutes
- with my toddler, I felt very safe on the train. There was one person at Union Station upset yelling about fare enforcement at the gates but security was being polite about it.
- now my toddler wants to take the train everywhere.
