Parking near the front of a busy store is not convenient, doesn't save you time, and is worse in almost every way.

This recently came to mind during a Costco run where I saw people in a full parking lot traffic jam for spots near the entrance, and it blows my mind that anyone wants to deal with that.

Pros:

  • Short walk to the store
  • Thats it

Cons:

  • Spend time looking for a "good" spot
  • Traffic jam getting to the spot
  • Can't do flow through parking usually
  • Tons of pedestrians you have to yield to
  • Much higher risk of door dings/fender bender from someone else
  • Less space to load your car
  • Traffic jam leaving the spot
  • Not close to the exit of the parking lot

Caveat for all of this.. it obviously it makes sense for handicapped/elderly/mobility issues people, but for everyone else it makes more sense to park out in the boonies and walk. Now don't go actually do that because I don't want all you to start ruining my parking lot boonies, but just a thought.

Edit: some people have brought up inclement weather which is actually a good point in favor of the front spots. Still doesn’t explain why everyone seems to be fighting for the front row normally

Airline travel etiquette

I’m sure this is a thing in other small-medium towns but the airline etiquette here is atrocious. Flew back from Denver a few weeks back and we navigated around bumpy weather and thunderstorms the entire way. Fasten seatbelt sign was on the entire flight but that didn’t stop these clowns from trying to get up and go to the bathroom, fidget with bags, or do god knows what else. The flight attendant had to ask people to stay seated a dozen times as least.

Also featured on this flight:

-boomers with iPads at max brightness

-4 accidental flight attendant call button hits

-someone watching a movie at full volume no headphones

-full volume conversations for the duration of the flight

-a general lethargy and cluelessness with respect to the boarding and deplaning process

I know not everyone traveling to rapid is from here so it’s not all just locals being obnoxious, but it’s probably a decent portion. In summary: what the fuck. Get it together gang

The Seiko Astron/Citizen Attesa are such wasted potential

On paper these watches are great: satellite auto timekeeping, solar power, perpetual calendar etc.. They’re available in stainless or pretty well executed titanium all for around $2-3k. From a features perspective they beat anything on the market short of a garmin or Apple Watch.

Problem is they’re trying to attract the watch enthusiast crowd, not the garmin/apple crowd, but the designs are so over styled and busy. They’re trying to do too much. You’ve got a world timer on a chronograph on a perpetual calendar on an already busy dial texture with a tachymeter bezel and it’s just way too much. Like mall watch levels of over styling.

You never see or hear about these watches for them having such a competitive feature set on paper and I think that’s why. If they could do the satellite time thing and put it in a conservatively designed GMT I think it would sell like hot cakes.

That’s it, that’s the hot take. These are dope but they look ridiculous and it’s their only barrier to huge success

Misaligned screws on the bezel and bracelet ruin the Cartier Santos for me

If you're going to have screws on the bezel and faces of each bracelet link, at least do it right and make sure they're aligned. This isn't a lot to ask for a watch that starts above $5/7K depending on the model. This is an eyesore on the same level as the screws on the hublot big bang models, but for some reason the santos gets a pass. I don't understand why AP is seemingly the only company that can align bezel screws to have them not look like crap.

Edit: Some commenters have pointed out that the AP uses bolts rather than screws and that aligning screws is super duper hard to do. Still looks sloppy

The Swatch collabs are harmless fun

It's genuinely perplexing how many people are enraged by the moonswatch/blancpain/AP collabs. Yes, they're cheaply made. Yes, they're cashing in on a more prestigious brand's reputation. Yes, the releases are overhyped and overpriced for what they are. Yes, you can get a better quality watch elsewhere for the money. But honestly.. who cares.

It's a marketing exercise that is harmless and fun, with the upside that some of these classic designs are getting more exposure with a generation that isn't particularly into watch buying.. and won't be able to afford the real models for decades. Might bring more people into the hobby and serve as a jumping off point for watch collecting in the long run. It's also kinda great that these brands are willing to slay the sacred cow and finally get rid of some of the deeply ingrained snobbery that goes on in the watch world.

Time will tell, but I think this is a smart marketing move because swatch group hasn't been beating rolex at the prestige game, so they took the exact opposite approach. Be the brand that appeals to the masses with fun options, instead of being the brand doubling and tripling down on their exclusive, borderline douchey reputation.

Lastly I'll just say if you're worried a plastic AP x Swatch model is going to cheapen the brand or cache of your real AP.. I think you just have severe insecurity. Stop worrying about what others are doing.

All watches are solar powered [science]

Solar watch - sun hits watch = solar powered watch

Battery powered - heavy metals formed in stellar explosions and/or the big bang used to make batteries - battery powers watch = solar powered watch

Mechanical auto or manual wind - watch powered by your movement either winding or movement of your wrist - your movement powered by food - food created through photosynthesis and/or animals eating plants then you eating those animals - sun powers photosynthesis = solar powered watch

At the end of the day every argument about watch movements is just how convoluted you want the path to solar power to be.
