Demolition Man (1993)

Demolition Man (1993)

I couldn't decide between rewatching two of my favorites, Rocky and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, so my partner half-jokingly suggested this.

I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed it! I'm not normally big into 80s and 90s action shooters, but I'm glad I gave this one a shot. Packed full of one-liners, goofy sci-fi, and some genuinely interesting concepts.

It was interesting to see a vision of a dystopian future that, instead of being grungy and hyperviolent, is extremely sanitized and pacifist. There's a lot that requires serious suspension of disbelief (like the idea that these changes happened over 35-odd years) and a few plot lines we never see follow up on, but overall this was a fun, entertaining flick. It showcases Stallone, Snipes and Denis Leary doing the kind of roles they really excel in, and a young Sandra Bullock clearly had fun playing against type as naive and silly.

Worth a viewing on a boring rainy afternoon if you find it streaming for free (and like cheesy humor).

P.S. if anyone knows how to use the three seashells, let me know!

"Why don't you have self checkout?" stop it. Please, just stop it.

Please, for the love of god, stop complaining to your cashier about self checkout. If we don't have it, we don't have it. They put them in all the stores (at least in midwest US where I am) and then removed a bunch of them. There were reasons. Your cashier is not allowed to tell you those reasons.

You are complaining to someone who a.) agrees with you already, b.) has zero control over that, and c.) is already doing their best to make up for it with speed and service.

There is nothing we can do about it. I get at LEAST 10+ complaints about the lack of self checkout every single shift. I am already exhausted and sore by the time we open because Aldi can be a back-breaking job, and I'm giving you a smile and the best possible service because I know it's not your fault. Please understand that the lack of self checkout is conversely not the fault of your local Aldi employees.

I love my customers, and I'm genuinely happy to see them every day, but the constant badgering about this issue we receive all day every day starts to wear on us. Even the people who think they aren't being mean about it and are 'simply asking', please stop. We want them too, we just have no control. And having to tactfully dance around it and give you the unsatisfying corporate approved answer is costing us time that gets counted against us and making the line longer and the next customers angrier.

(And as an aside, there's no need to ask us if we can call another cashier up. If we could, we would. We know the line is long. Sometimes we try to call for a second ringer and we don't get another cashier anyway because there are so few of us in the store at a time. I promise, we don't want to keep you waiting. We're doing everything we can.)

Okay, rant over. Thank you for reading. And for the record, I really do get it, and I really do mean it when I say I love my customers. Y'all are the brightness that makes a shift less rough and gives me something to smile about. I truly enjoy helping you, and it sucks that I can't make this situation better for you guys or for us. For whatever it's worth, I'll keep doing my best every day to go above and beyond for you and hopefully make grocery shopping your most enjoyable errand of the day.

Looking for a birthday gift for my 11 y.o. niece

Hi guys! I'm trying to pick a gift for my niece this year, I want it to be something special as she's about to move far away (from Midwest US to south Florida).

She's a very smart and outgoing kid and very excited about the move, she's been eagerly picking out items to decorate her new room.

Important info:

  1. She's an avid crocheter and trying hard to start a business with it, making and selling commission projects and trying to get into craft fairs. She has a lot of crochet tools already and a monogrammed bag for her stuff. I have bought her tons of yarn in the past and she's loved it, but that's too bulky for right before a big move.

  2. She's decorating her room in all baby blue.

  3. She's saving up for a puppy, she's set herself an eventual goal of a few thousand dollars to include care, grooming, etc and is hoping to earn enough in the next year or two.

  4. She's becoming more health conscious, trying to work out and lose weight. I've been trying to be very careful how I encourage her here, saying I think she's perfect how she is but I support whatever goals she wants to set for herself in all things and steering the conversation toward building muscle and getting strong instead of being skinny. I developed an ED around her age and don't want that for her.

  5. She likes to sing and dance, has done concerts and ballet, and plays sports as well. She's loaded with extracurriculars and really busy all the time.

I love her so much and I'm going to miss her like crazy, so I want this one to be special, but I just can't seem to brainstorm this. Ideally $100 budget.
