When we use the word “independent” here, we mean the broader Indian non-film music ecosystem, not strictly music released without labels or distributors. This list looks at 19 moments from that space that reached audiences beyond their original context and became part of a wider global story around Indian music.

#Watch Swedish progressive metal band Opeth return to India after nearly seven years, performing in Mumbai last evening as part of their ongoing The Last Will and Testament tour. The show took place at The Lalit Lawns following multiple venue changes in the days leading up to the concert, with Mumbai metal band Dirge opening the night.

The set moved between the band’s current material and different periods of their catalogue, including “Godhead’s Lament,” “Windowpane,” “The Grand Conjuration,” “Demon of the Fall,” “The Drapery Falls” and “Deliverance,” alongside songs from 2024 album The Last Will and Testament. Opeth first performed in India at IIT Madras’ Saarang in 2009, returned for Summerstorm in Bengaluru in 2012 and last played the country at NH7 Weekender in Pune in 2019. Their 2026 India run continues in Bengaluru on October 4th.

#News Pune-based metal promoter Rohit Jalgaonkar, founder of Blood Eagle Events, has passed away in Goa. He was a long-time part of Pune’s metal scene, organising independent gigs and creating space for original bands through Blood Eagle Events.

According to reports from Goa, Jalgaonkar allegedly stabbed himself during an argument with his partner in Siolim and later died from his injuries. His passing has prompted tributes from musicians, promoters and members of the independent metal community, many of whom remember his role in supporting original heavy music and keeping independent gigs active in Pune.

The confirmation follows her recent Instagram Story teasing an India announcement, which directed fans to a Laylo signup page.

Those who registered have now started receiving a text from Dean confirming the Lollapalooza India headline slot, along with access to first-release tickets.

The festival’s full lineup is still to be announced, but Dean is now the first major name confirmed for the 2027 edition.
