Sawtooth Polyhedral

This Sawtooth Polyhedral explores the contrast between sharp, complex geometry and the softness of nature. Its dramatic, spiked form is constructed from 60 individual faces, each framed by a 3D-printed border designed to interlock with the neighboring pieces with almost LEGO-like precision.

Inset within each frame is a piece of clear laser-cut acrylic, UV printed with an intricate pattern of winding green vines and delicate flowers. The transparency of the acrylic allows the botanical pattern to appear suspended within the structure, while overlapping faces create unexpected layers of color, light, and detail as the piece is viewed from different angles.

What I especially enjoy about this design is the contradiction between its form and its surface. The sawtooth geometry is angular, pointed, and almost aggressive, while the flowing vines and tiny blossoms soften those edges and give the piece a more organic character. The result is a polyhedral that feels simultaneously mathematical and botanical, engineered and delicate.

It’s also a combination of several of my favorite fabrication techniques—3D printing, laser cutting, UV printing, and precision assembly—all coming together to transform a complicated geometric form into something that feels unexpectedly alive.

Looking for a Local Maker to Trade Skills & Time (Bluffton, SC)

Hi everyone,

I'm a local maker in Bluffton looking for someone who might be interested in a unique skill exchange.

I am retired and live with Multiple Sclerosis, which unfortunately makes some of the physical assembly work on my projects increasingly difficult. I can still design and create just about anything, but assembling my art and projects has become the biggest challenge.

Most of what I build is for fun and personal projects, including:

  • Custom geometric polyhedrals
  • Laser-cut bathymetric maps
  • Birdhouses and bird feeders
  • LED art and lighting projects
  • 3D printed designs
  • Laser engraving and acrylic projects

My workshop includes multiple laser cutters, several 3D printers, a UV printer, and all the software I use for designing. If you've ever wanted to learn Fusion 360, Adobe Illustrator, laser cutting, 3D printing, or digital fabrication in general, I'd be happy to teach what I know.

In return, I'm hoping to find someone who enjoys building things—someone who's patient, reasonably handy, and doesn't mind assembling projects that are often a bit like LEGO or model kits. No engineering background is necessary; just an interest in making things and learning.

I'm not looking for an employee or anything formal—just someone who enjoys creating and might like to trade some assembly help for access to tools, mentorship, and a well-equipped makerspace.

If this sounds interesting, send me a message. Even if you're completely new to making things but have always wanted to learn, I'd love to chat.

Thanks!

Rocky's Polyhedral

I still haven't seen a great version of Rocky's enclosure as a 3D model or STL file, so I started working on my own. I like the labeled mini polyhedrals in the Project Hail Mary prop shop tour from Adam Savage are the best references that I've seen. Before I get too far, Is anybody else working on this or of more picture references like this? At this point I'm just guessing at the dihedral angles in Fusion 360 to try and get close, but it's going to be a lot of work. Would be nice if they just released the 3D model for this like they did with the grace figure and Rocky model.

WLED Zonohedrified Hexagonal Antiprism lamp

This one has been in the works since last year. Exported as a shape from Stella4D, designed in Fusion 360, this custom antiprism has 84 faces of 7 different types. 3D printed using silk copper and silver PLA filament. LED pixel bulbs behind black LED acrylic faces illuminated by small WLED controller.

May the 4th be with you. This 3D printed lightbox uses a 16x16 LED matrix with a small WLED controller. Lego Lord Vader was UV printed on Milky White acrylic using the eufyMake E1, and laser cut to shape on the Glowforge. Lighting effects are standard built-in WLED presets.
