And so it begins!

Purchased this pressure canner yesterday, my main intention is to use it to can salmon that I catch to free up some freezer space, but I’ll be doing a bunch of other things as well! It is my understanding that this can also be used as a water bath canner if you don’t pressurize it, so I’ll likely be making all manner of different recipes and things to try. Any suggestions/tips/tricks are greatly appreciated!

Trapping and killing invasive European Green Crabs on the BC coast.

These crabs are the perfect storm for an invasive species, able to survive upwards of a week or more out of water, low salinity (allowing them to go further into estuaries), and water temperatures down to -1°C. They have decimated local Dungeness populations, destroy eelgrass habitat, and have done massive damage to the mussels and barnacles along with other bivalves in the area. They cannot be eradicated once established, but large scale trapping efforts can mitigate the impacts. In my area of northwestern Vancouver island they were trapped by the tens of thousands and their population has since gone down, but they’re very much still a threat to local species.

Anyone else here trap and kill invasive European Green Crabs?

Once these crabs have taken root somewhere it’s impossible to eradicate them, but management efforts can be taken, particularly by killing off the smaller juvenile crabs, daily trapping and killing of the crabs can mitigate the damage they do.

Beer battered halibut is a hard one to beat!

My parteners family is up visiting for the weekend so I wanted to treat them to a nice meal, pulled some halibut out of the freezer I caught a few weeks ago and fried it up!

Fishing on the north island is starting to heat up!

Buzz bombed a keeper coho and a few C&R springs off a local dock, tons of fun on 12lb test!

First coho of the year!

Second cast off a local dock with a 2.5” blue holo buzz bomb, this gal hammered it and gave me a few good runs and jumps before getting her in the net. Not my best fillet job by a long shot, but the first of the year always tends to be a bit rough.

A few small early season springs released while casting for coho, nice start to the season!

Spent my days off on a commercial prawn boat, thought the folks here might appreciate an insight into the BC spot prawn fishery!
