Great piece about Elijah Green

George Lewis writes some pretty insightful stuff about the Nats farm system. This piece about the former #1 pick and consensus disaster Elijah Green is the most insightful thing I've read about him.

(It's also a great explanation of xwOBAcon, which seems to be quite relevant when looking at whether Green can ever contribute)

I read this and concluded that Toboni & Co have decided there's no point in continuing to try to change who Elijah Green is, but they are going to see if he could continue to exactly be Elijah Green at higher levels. In other words, the damage he does when he runs into a ball is so insanely high that he could still possibly play a role without improving his bat-to-ball skills.

Talk amongst yourselves.

Reasonable price for custom cushion?

We have just built a window seat that's 8 feet long and 2 feet deep. We'd like to put a seat cushion on it that's 4" thick, with a low maintenance/microfiber cover. My wife got a quote from Ethan Allen of $2,300. I am wondering if that's the right place to go, and if not, where should we look to get a seat cushion like that made? Note:

  • We don't want to sew it ourselves
  • We do want to see/feel the fabric

What Griffin wanted

I've been saying here since May that Foster Griffin's agent will be asking for a $100+ million contract, and that all of these people screaming "extend him for 3 years $45 million!" were smoking something -- that there was no way a pitcher in his position would accept a "friendly" contract extension.

Now it's been reported that Griffin asked for 5 years, $120-$130 million.

Not saying I told ya so but , , ,

, , , actually yeah. I'm saying I told ya so. Shopping Griffin was the only option.

We can debate whether Tononi's strategy of going for quantity of major league ready pitchers was better than a strategy of getting a higher ranked longer term prospect or a QO draft pick, but extending him wasnt really on the table.

Maui Jims: Are these authentic or counterfeit?

My all-time favorite sunglasses are my ultra-light Maui Jim Lighthouse sunglasses with black nylon frames. They are VERY old and have a small crack in the lens.

This model rarely gets discounted much, but I saw a fantastic deal from Ashford (under $90 shipped after coupon). They are a well-known discount retailer for watches and sunglasses, but are not an authorized Maui Jim retailer. I ordered them, figuring if I got a counterfeit, I'd return them.

What's confusing to me now is that I am comparing what I received to what I already own, and several things about them are NOT the same, but I simply cannot tell if this is just an evolution of the way they are marked/manufactured. And beyond the markings, my old Lighthouse glasses came in a zipper shell case. These came in a hard trifold case. My old lenses don't look exactly like the "neutral gray" lenses in the new pair, but it's possible my old ones were a discontinued lens style.

Oh, and my old ones weighed 14 grams. The new ones weigh 13 grams.

I would appreciate if somebody who's familiar with the newest versions of Maui Jims would take a look:

Packaging

Right Arm Frame Markings - New at top, Old at bottom

Left Arm frame markings - New at top, Old at bottom

New lenses look black from all angles. Old lenses look like they have a red edge when viewed from the top.

New lenses (top) look more smoky, less black (but perhaps my old ones are a discontinued lens color?)

Your thoughts welcome.

Max Scherzer Is Still in the Fight. These Nats Are, Too.

Jesse Dougherty writing on Max and the current Nationals. Gave me chills.

Josiah Gray Still Wants to Help the Nats. Maybe Even This Year.

Jesse Dougherty with another feature story, this one including a shout-out to "the sickest of sickos" who rooted for Jake Alu.

James Wood Is Still Growing (And Other Things to Know)

Jesse Dougherty profiled James Wood.

And that is an understatement!

(PS can we just refrain from the knee jerk "Sign him now!" reply comments on one post? It's tiresome.)

Jesse Dougherty delves into the team's new draft process

How is Paul Toboni working to turn the Nats into the promised "drafting and player development monster?"

Jesse Dougherty was in town this week delving into the Nationals' transition -- from "finger pointing" of the past to a team effort meshing draft strategy with the team's player development strengths.

Good stuff:

Jesse Dougherty is covering the Nationals again, and of course it's great

For those who missed his first article, Jesse Dougherty has joined NOTUS and has just published his second feature story about the Washington Nationals.

Jesse was, of course, a great National beat writer for the Washington Post, and left the beat a few years ago to cover the business of college sports. Now at NOTUS he's showing his full skills as a feature writer, in this case talking to Paul Toboni about the the important questions that don't usually receive the focus from everyday beat reporting.

Being a full subscriber to Mark Zuckerman's Nats Journal is as great as any beat reporting Nats fans have ever had. These kinds of features from Jesse Dougherty at NOTUS and Spencer Nusbaum at The Athletic really round out coverage nicely. Jeff Bezos really blew it when he fired these guys.

Best place to stock up on provisions between Jackson Hole airport and Grand Teton (Jackson Lake)?

Tomorrow we are flying into Jackson Hole, renting an SUV, and heading off for 3 weeks Grand Teton, Yellowstone, and then South Dakota. We are staying in lodges, but certainly don't want to rely on them for meals. For trips like this, we've always looked for a Walmart where we can stock up on provisions -- everything from nuts and protein bars to Ziploc bags, sunscreen, water, etc, WITHOUT breaking the bank.

Also -- bear spray (can't pack that on a plane) -- Should I just rent that from Bear Aware?

What's your recommendation?

Thanks everybody! Rented the bear spray at the airport then got most of what we needed at Albertsons. Pretty weak selection of good quality nutrition bars but perfect for everything else.

I'm in month 6 of a remodeling project that's another month from the finish line (it's a complex project that affected most of the house and a lot of coordination with subs). A lead carpenter and project foreman has been on site almost full time and has been my key point of contact. He goes the extra mile regularly to make sure everything is to our liking, and does little extra things for me all the time (examples just from today: he repaired a light fixture he noticed was flickering and while they were installing a roof vent he told me they cleaned the gutters while they were up there). Anything I ask, his answer is "yes, no problem." As we approach the finish line, I'd like to hear from people who've been in this role: Is it typical to give a gift to somebody who's played such a role? What gesture is appropriate? If cash, how much?
