My hot take after 50 games

It’s obvious that this team is exceeding expectations. .500 baseball through 50 games is far better than any of us were thinking and it’s due to our incredible offense (though it’s also in spite of our awful pitching).

My (maybe) hot take is that we should not make any moves at the trade deadline whatsoever except for this: we have an absurd amount of middle infielder depth in our farm system that can be traded for impact pitchers. We’re not losing anything this season by trading prospects, and we have so much to gain from improving our pitching even a little bit.

Bottom line is that we don’t need to trade CJ or anybody else at the MLB level right now. The concept with this roster is working and we should keep exploring that.

PJ Poulin to Rochester

Am I the only one who doesn’t understand this? Our pitching staff has been horrible, literally last in the league in runs allowed this year with nearly 6 per game. So why are we sending a guy with a sub 3 era who’s been one of our most used arms out of the pen to AAA? Like 12th overall in WAR on this team, clearly contributes and get outs when asked. Has his walk and K numbers been a little off to start the year? Maybe, but it’s May. I would prefer a guy like this stay and settle into the zone where it’s not really hurting us compared to the other BP stand ins we’ve been trotting out. Are we trying to give up more runs for our offense to overcome? What’s the vision?

Potential Abrahms Trade

I’m seeing a lot of posts and comments here freaking out about the possibility of trading CJ. On the one hand, I get it; he’s a great player and one of the most exciting things about this team in what have been some very unexciting years. Still, I think that everyone’s worries about it are really overblown.

First off, we need pitching depth desperately. with a solid rotation this is a playoff team, and we need to fix that asap.

Second, we’ve got a ton of middle infield depth coming up. Between Seaver King, Fitzgerald, Willits, and even maybe Fein/Cruz, there’s a really good chance we have another superstar shortstop in 3-5 years. So signing CJ to a long term deal doesnt make a ton of sense.

Lastly, this FO has seemed really good at making trades and developing the prospects from them.

To be clear, I love having CJ on the team and I don’t want to lose him for nothing. I would be thrilled to trade him if you offered every single prospect in the Dodgers organization. Between those two extremes is a plausible trade that we as fans should be happy with, and that’s not something to freak out about yet.

Campaign to keep CJ

it’s getting to the point where it is pretty obvious Nats front office should not have dealt every one of our pitchers worth half a cent. this team is better than expected. Harry Ford with a .263 SLG in AAA does not help the cause

LETS START THE PRESSURE CAMPAIGN TO SIGN CJ!! WHO IS WITH ME!!

[Zuckerman] The Nationals optioned PJ Poulin to Triple-A after tonight's game, paving the way for Clayton Beeter to be activated off the IL and for Andrew Alvarez to remain on the major-league staff.

Jacob Young

Dude has added a real sneaky power element to his game. He went oppo on opening day, and now has 3 homers on this homestand. I’m glad he’s figured out a piece of those hitting struggles he’s dealt with his whole career. Maybe that really is the anti-Darnell Coles effect. Happy for JY

Bleacher Report Power Rankings: Nats are ranked WHERE?

  1. Washington Nationals (23-24)

Previous Rank: No. 21

Last Week: 2-1 @ CIN, 2-1 vs. BAL

With an 8-5 record in their last 13 games and a pair of series wins last week, the Nationals have gone from better-than-expected to making a serious push for a winning record more than a quarter of the way into the 2026 season. They lead the NL with a .785 team OPS in May, and that has helped cover up some of their shortcomings on the mound.

I love me some Nats, but that take is still a little too hot. 18th or 19 feels more correct to me.

Nationals’ Dylan Crews Return Changes Everything

The Nationals’ decision to recall Dylan Crews while sending Brady House back to Triple-A feels like a bigger organizational turning point than a normal roster move. Washington suddenly has a crowded young outfield with James Wood, Daylen Lile, Jacob Young and now Crews all needing playing time, while the team also leads MLB in runs scored after entering the year with major offensive concerns. The article looks at why Crews’ return creates new pressure on the Nationals’ rebuild, roster construction and long-term prospect timeline.

Waiting for the rain delay notification

We got pups in the park tonight, hoping they send something out soon. My spoiled son will not be nearly as happy with rainy conditions.

Update: Leo got a foul ball! Pic in comments. Also the game started on time, no weather issues!

Trying Everything at Nationals Park Part 2

I'm starting a new Substack series where I'll be trying every food item at Nationals Park. Hoping it could lend itself as a helpful resource for people coming for games who don't often come, or even better, a quick laugh.

Today, we dive into Capo Deli. Opinions are my own, not trying to ruffle any feathers.

Dread it. Run from it. Destiny arrives all the same. James Wood does not care for your MLB debut.

Pictures #1-3: James Wood hitting an inside-the-park grand slam off the glove of Mets left fielder Nicholas Morabito on his MLB debut (May 19, 2026).

Pictures #4-6: James Wood hitting a leadoff home run off of Braves JR Ritchie on his very first pitch in the majors (April 23, 2026).

I sense a pattern. Who will be his next victim come June??
