How to care about my bowiea?
Hey everyone,
I recently got a Bowiea volubilis and I still have a lot of beginner questions about growing it. I’d really appreciate advice from people with experience keeping this species.
A few things I’m wondering about:
What is the lowest temperature Bowiea volubilis can realistically tolerate without damage?
Can the vine climb on fishing line / thin nylon thread, or does it need thicker support?
In the pot from the photo, does it look like there are two bulbs or just one divided bulb?
As the plant grows, will the bulbs naturally rise more above the soil surface over time?
Roughly how much can the bulb increase in size during one growing season?
How do you overwinter yours?
How much do you water during active growth vs dormancy?
Does the vine die back completely on its own, or should it be cut manually at some point?
Is there any way to grow it so the bulb stays fully green without developing the dry papery outer layers near the point where the vine emerges?
During active growth, would you water about once a week or less often?
I’m especially interested in hearing from people growing it indoors in temperate climates.
Thanks!
