Thinking about getting a Mudita Kompakt before moving to China — questions on pricing and WeChat

Hey all, considering picking up a Mudita Kompakt. I’ll be relocating to China as an expat in about a year, so trying to figure out if this could realistically work as my daily phone there. A few questions for anyone who’s used one:
Has anyone seen it drop below the current $339/€~340 promo price (regular is $399/€439)? Wondering if it’s worth waiting for a bigger sale or just buying now.

Has anyone tried sideloading WeChat specifically? I’ve found plenty of reports on WhatsApp working reasonably well, but nothing concrete on WeChat performance. My main concern is QR-based payments — I’d need to scan/pay via Alipay or WeChat Pay regularly for day-to-day stuff (shops, transport, etc.), and I’m not sure how well that holds up on E Ink with a sideloaded app.

For context on how I plan to use it otherwise, so answers can be more targeted: I’ll be sideloading a VPN app, using WhatsApp (sideloaded) mainly for calls, and using Uber through a mobile browser rather than the app.
I’m also testing a few other minimalist/alternative phone options in parallel to see which actually holds up best for this use case, so any comparisons to similar devices are welcome too. Just trying to figure out if the QR payment apps are going to be the weak link in this setup.

Thanks in advance for any real-world experience!

Thinking of switching from iPhone 15 to Sidephone — a few questions before I order

Hey everyone! Been lurking here for a while and finally ready to pull the trigger on a Sidephone. Coming from an iPhone 15 as my daily driver, so a few questions before I order — would appreciate any real-world experience:

  1. Which keypad should I go with, Classic or QWERTY? Coming from iPhone typing, not sure how big the adjustment is either way.

  2. I travel and roam a lot between countries, does Sidephone handle international roaming well, or is it mainly built around US carriers?

  3. For those who’ve used both, how does typing actually compare, Classic keypad (T9) vs QWERTY tile? Which one did you end up sticking with?

  4. I split my time between Italy, the UK, and India (have a home in each). Which of these would be the cheapest/easiest place to ship to?

  5. If it ships to Italy, am I going to get hit with customs charges/import duties on top of the price?

  6. If I order today, what’s the realistic timeline before it’s actually in my hands?

  7. Is there any price increase (or drop) expected soon that I should wait out, or is now a fine time to order?

  8. How’s the voice call quality, and does it pair well with Bluetooth earphones? Any issues with call clarity or connection stability?

  9. How good is the build quality, do I actually need a case and screen protector, or is it durable enough as-is? Any recommendations if there are good third-party alternatives to the official ones?

  10. I’ll be in China next week, in Shanghai specifically. Since the phones seem to be manufactured there, is there any way to get one easier or cheaper locally, rather than ordering it shipped internationally?

A bit about me, I’m into experimental/niche tech products in general (I use a Supernote for note-taking), so the whole Sidephone concept is a big part of what’s drawing me in.

Thanks in advance, excited to join the dumbphone life

Plugin idea / request

Dear Developers

Right now, when I want to highlight or call out important text in my notes, I do it manually with the black marker — basically scribbling back and forth over the area until it looks filled in. It works, but it’s slow and never comes out clean, especially on smaller text boxes or irregular shapes.

What I’d like is a plugin that can fill a closed shape with solid color automatically. So instead of scribbling, I’d either lasso-select the area I want filled, or draw a shape using the SNShapes plugin, and then just tap a fill button to have it solidly colored in. Being able to choose the fill color (not just black) would be a nice bonus too.
That’s the core idea — turn a manual, repetitive scribbling action into a one-tap fill. Will that be possible ?

Reliable RTO agent for OD33

I’ve had really bad experiences with RTO agents in Bhubaneswar — some overcharged me, threatened me, or ghosted me after taking payment. One even kept my original documents and stopped responding entirely, then warned me not to follow up or they’d file a case against me.

Since then I’ve stopped chasing them. I’m an NRI, and I now need help finding a reliable RTO agent — my bike is currently in Bangalore, and I first need to get the hypothecation terminated, followed by an NOC.

Too short life to read books?

I used to read a lot of books in my native language malayalam back in my school days. Later somehow I couldnt carry on with that that habit. I did my schooling in Malayalam, English was my second language. I started learning English in 4th grade. In short I am a very slow english reader. Of late I resumed reading and I completed 2 books in a row in last few weeks. Because the English literature is so rich, I chose to read English books this time.I feel very happy about it.

At the same time, considering my reading speed and hearing about whole lot of fantastic books around, I feel my life is too short to read even some of those good books!

I have Anna Karenina, The name of the rose, Devotion of suspect X, Calamity Club in the shelf. Im totally confused… Which one should I start with?

And do you have any tips to read good books faster ? I know its all about enjoying the book, but I have a restless feeling inside about missing out many good books and an urge to cover maximum ground….

Help with KOReader - ZEN OS / ZEN UI

Hi everyone,

I recently started using KOReader on my Supernote and came across a post about ZenUI / ZenOS — it looked like a really clean, minimal interface, so I wanted to try it.

Here’s what I did:

  1. Downloaded the plugin from the zen_ui.koplugin GitHub releases page (v3.0.1)
  2. Unzipped it — the extracted folder is named zenos.koplugin
  3. The instructions say to move this folder into koreader/plugins/
  4. KOReader’s built-in file explorer wouldn’t recognize the raw unzipped folder, so I couldn’t move it directly
  5. As a workaround, I created a folder called “ZenOS Plugin,” pasted zenos.koplugin inside it, and moved that whole thing into koreader/plugins/ — ending up with:
    koreader/plugins/ZENOS Plugin/zenos.koplugin
  6. Restarted KOReader and checked Plugin Manager under both “built-in plugins” and “user-defined plugins” — it’s not showing up in either.

Has anyone gotten ZenUI working on a Supernote? I suspect the extra wrapper folder (“ZenOS Plugin”) is the problem, and that zenos.koplugin needs to sit directly inside plugins/ without being nested — but I can’t get KOReader’s file manager to let me move the raw unzipped folder there.

Would appreciate any pointers — happy to share screenshots if useful.
