First five days with the Sidephone

First five days with the Sidephone

tldr:

One week in: screen time down to 3 hours/day (still carry my iPhone 13mini for work apps)
Hardware is genuinely great. Size, weight, and build quality nail the "smart brick phone" nostalgia.

QWERTY keypad is great but needs improvement. Double-tap mode works way better than predictive, but pressure inconsistency, input lag, and no backlight are real challenges to using it intuitively.

Small screen means small touch targets. I've accidentally fat-finger-typed gibberish alot lol

App ecosystem is overly restrictive for my usecases. Would love more known apps out of the box like spotify, a decent email app etc for easier personalisation.

Overall though, I can't wait to see this phone evolve and improve, especially the UX. We're in early sidephone iterations so the only way is up. Really awesome work from the team!

LONG READ:

I was really excited for this device. My screen time was getting out of control and I was looking for something that would support my basic phone needs while putting a strong constraint on my tendency to passively consume social media and streaming.

I've tried: Brick, Downtime, app timers, using my old BlackBerry bold, downgrading to an older iPhone, none of it worked. I'll only blame my own willpower, but after a week with the sidephone, I've reduced my overall screen time to 3 hours a day (I still carry an iPhone for work, where I need to respond to emails quickly).

Pros

Just enough friction. The restrictive nature of this phone, balanced with the ability to install your favourite essentials, feels like the best balance of all the solutions I've tried. Being away from the main app ecosystems really prevented me from app-bloating my phone.

Easy set up. The setup was quick and the guide was genuinely useful: no logins, no data transfer. The qr codes scanned easily and it was up and running fast. The keypad was easy to snap in and swap out.

Support for basic apps. WhatsApp, email, notes, and messaging all work out of the box, so you can get going right away.

Phone quality: weight, key size, screen size. At first I thought the size might be too big (it's the same height as my iPhone 13 Mini), but after using it I really appreciate the size and weight. The keypad is generously sized and feels ergonomic. I'm not stretching my thumb or straining my pinky to hold it. I can fully operate it one-handed without strain.

The nostalgia factor gives me real joy. As a millennial who went through brick phones and then smartphones, this feels like the smart brick phone of my teenage years. The team has done a great job on the hardware.

Cons

QWERTY keypad quality. I switched to QWERTY straight away since that was one of the main draws for me. I used the BlackBerry Pearl for years and it's still one of my favourite phones, so I was determined to make this my main keypad.
The experience could use some work, though:

- Predictive qwerty was unusable for me. I speak three languages within my closest circle, so predictive text wasn't going to cut it. I didn't even know double-tap QWERTY existed until I found it on the subreddit, and by then I'd already wasted time trying to set up word shortcuts, typing gibberish in the process. Double-tap feels far more intuitive and is now my default. It would be huge if this were offered as an explicit setup choice on first install instead of a hidden discovery.

- Keypad pressure and rhythm feel inconsistent. The side keys need more pressure than the centre ones, could just be my unit, but it takes real getting used to. I still can't type fast because of input errors and lag caused by the pressure inconsistency.

- Accessing special characters and emojis is hard. Some symbols are reachable with the Sym+ key, but for dashes, slashes, etc. you need the advanced symbol key, which lives in a bottom bar you have to side-scroll through. Some UX work here would go a long way, even a proper symbol picker dialog would help, especially given how small the touch targets are at this screen size.

- Keypad backlight is needed. The phone is nearly unusable in low light. I was at a concert and could barely message anyone. In a strange way it kept me more present, so maybe that's a silver lining, but even a very dim backlight option would be a big improvement.

- Occasional input lag. Pressing a key sometimes doesn't register a character, so I end up pressing repeatedly until something shows up. This happens often enough that I'd call it a real issue, not a minor one.

- Noise. This keypad is more click-clacky than my mechanical keyboard and drives my wife nuts, so I've stopped using it in bed. Good side effect tho, so arguably a pro in disguise.

Small screen considerations:
- Touch targets are small, especially at the bottom of the screen. When the symbol row is showing alongside the WhatsApp send button, it gets very fat-finger-unfriendly. I've accidentally sent gibberish and voice notes more than once.

- Alternative navigation. I keep wondering whether the QWERTY needs a directional pad, or whether the phone needs some non-touchscreen navigation method given the size. I keep thinking of the Apple Watch crown and how easy that makes moving between options. I've ordered the classic keypad to see if it solves some of my QWERTY frustrations.

- Screen real estate. Apps aren't optimised for this size, which compounds the touch target problems.

App ecosystem:
-The essentials pack is still restrictive and takes some tinkering to get fully working.
Routing custom email domains through K9 Mail was difficult, so I had to find a different email app that handled it better. The Notes app is clunky and too basic, with no formatting at all. I'm not trying to write a novel on this thing, but basic bullet points or to-do lists would add a huge amount of functionality already. Key mapping UI was confusing enough that I gave up on it.
App icons had no titles, so I had to guess which app was which by trial and error.

- Personalisation: Getting the phone to run apps that already worked on my old phone still requires some research. I found how to get Spotify working through the subreddit, but it would be a big win for the sidephone team if apps like this worked out of the box, or at least were readily available through Aurora Store.

Small nit on quality control. The first time I opened the app, it loaded in testing mode, in Chinese, and I had to guess my way through the menu using Google Translate.

Finding my rhythm with the sidephone

Having installed my basics (whatsapp, spotify, email, duckduckgo, substack) the sidephone is now my main phone, with my iPhone 13 Mini as backup. I carry it everywhere and don't feel the pull to bring my phone's usual apps along. With an Apple Watch that supports Apple Pay, I don't feel the need for a banking app on the sidephone either.

Can't log into Discord

I can't get past the 2FA screen because the confirmation button is off screen. Can't even force the app into landscape mode by rotating the screen.

Sundial - beautiful but cannot use

The Sundial works great as a media controller, but one thing keeps happening: when my phone is locked in my pocket, an accidental press of the center button starts Apple Music.

Could we have an option to ignore the center button when the screen is off and no media is already playing? That would prevent accidental playback while keeping the physical controls intact.

Auxio Full Cover Art Question

I just got my Sidephone yesterday and I'm loading up my tracks that have cover arts attached - I saw this picture of someone who has the full art on display and was wondering how do I achieve that? Thanks!

Camera glitch

I just received my new sidephone and I am very happy with it. However, the camera shows pink streaks (a glitch) when I want to take a photo. Is there a solution for this?

Placed order, went through fine and paid, whole storefront now shows sold out. Did I get super lucky and got in for the final batch until restock or not lucky at all and order will be massively delayed?

I must be EXTREMELY lucky or perhaps not. Just ordered my phone about an hour or so ago, then went to check and see if I could order screen protectors and everything is sold out, including the side phone itself.

If someone from the team sees this, maybe you could chime in. I'm hoping I made it in time for whatever batch my unit is supposed to be a part of as I'm super excited for the phone. If there is any way I can order a screen protector with it that would be amazing.

I LOVE THIS DEVICE

Received my sidephone yesterday, I am absolutely in love with this thing. These are my initial impressions after a day of use:

Positives:

  • Very customizable without sacrificing its dumb-ness. Way more apps than I expected are compatible and functional, but the smaller screen size and key input add friction and make the device feel like a tool rather than a distraction
  • Qwerty keyboard works well (only ran into minor bugs) and feels fantastic, key mapper is so much fun to mess around with
  • "Retro" camera is super cute, especially when using the OpenCamera app. I was surprised at how pretty the pictures i got out of it were, but i've always liked the lo-fi digital feel so other opinions may vary
  • Flashlight is surprisingly bright for its size
  • Calls sound great, no lag, high quality voices on both ends
  • Case fits the device's form wonderfully, and has a very pleasant, grippy texture
  • Device is designed and built with care and attention to detail. I fell in love with its appearance from pictures. In person it did not disappoint!

Recommendations:

  • Sometimes notifications don't pop up on the lock screen (could just be an error with my settings)
  • Device is slightly top heavy, maybe some small weights in new keypads could solve this
  • It would be awesome to have official support for OpenBubbles or Bluebubbles, that way those transitioning from an apple device who own a mac can still use imessage (solving the lack of RCS) and iCloud keychain. Openbubbles currently functions with some minor bugs but with further support it could be even smoother.
  • Beeper support would be great as well, as a young person a lot of people reach out through social media DMs so being able to access them without the addictive content is fantastic. Beeper runs but lags quite a bit, so I think official support would help out there

Thank you so much for the sidephone experience! I cant wait to see where this device goes in the future. I am very excited to be an early supporter, and I know you guys can do great things!

Sidephone, long way to go!

I received my Sidephone this week, and now that more people are getting theirs internationally, I wanted to share some early thoughts.

I tried switching to Android and flip phones several times, but they always pulled me back into the same smartphone habits. Modern phones are designed to keep you engaged from the moment you wake up until you sleep. For me, it wasn’t the apps themselves—it was the constant anxiety of checking notifications, Instagram, and endless doomscrolling.

I almost bought the Light Phone because the hardware and industrial design are beautiful (I’m a designer, so that matters to me). But I chose Sidephone because it lets me keep the few apps I genuinely need while making them inconvenient enough that I don’t want to spend hours on them. That balance is exactly what I was looking for.
Overall, I’m happy with it. The software bugs will improve over time, but the biggest area that needs attention is typing.

A couple of ideas:

Voice-only keyboard. A minimal keyboard with just a microphone, backspace, and send/OK button. It would take almost no screen space and would be perfect for Sundial or gamepad users. The full keyboard could still be available whenever needed for passwords or manual typing.

Better notification center. Notifications are too easy to miss, and the current layout gives too much space to controls instead of the notifications themselves. A redesign here would make a big difference.

Really enjoying the philosophy behind the Sidephone. Looking forward to seeing how the software evolves.

Any Updates on different languages on the QWERTY keyboard ?

I have been really liking my sidephone, one of the major issues I have with it is that the Qwerty and T9 predictive typing only work in english, any news on spanish being added in the roadmap?

Outlook sync with Fossify

Hi there,

I recently received my Sidephone in the mail and I'm really happy with it so far. :)

One thing I'm wondering about still is how to sync my current Outlook calendar on my sidephone. Outlook doesn't support CalDAV, so there is no Base URL that will work in DAVx⁵. That means I can't use it with Fossify AFAIK.

Have you found any other solutions for this? Long-term I might switch to a different mail provider with is open-source, but for now I just want to have an overview of my calendar on my phone so I can see my appointments from a quick glance on the widget.

I GOT MY SIDEPHONE YAY!!

But I have a question

Hii I just got my side phone today and I'm so happy! Packaging looks great and the device amazing:) I used the guide to install all the apps with the QR codes, super easy!

But now I have a question Can someone explain step by step how to install apps outside of the provided ones in the packs? ( I'm not particularly good with tech)

I just need Spotify and then I'll be set!

Thanks in advance!

First impressions of my Founder's Edition Sidephone...

Good weight, solid build feel.

Silicone case - fits on well! Would love to see a smooth-backed case come out as an option as the silicone doesn't slide easily into pockets.

Operating system - nice and familiar as a longtime Android user.

Keypads - changed to the QWERTY keypad pretty much right away - getting used to navigating it as I've been T9-ing for a bit now, but it's coming. I like the solid click of the keys.

Camera - works fine, I prefer the Open Camera option though as it has more custom options, plus QR reader capability. Decent 'retro style' pics.

Some bugaboos...

I've heard the complaints about the lack of a backlit screen, and I understand why that's a complicated ask - but the lack of contrast between the black keys and the dark grey symbols on them is definitely an issue. The keys are hard to read in medium to dim light, even - not just the dark. It really seems like throwing white or lighter colour on there is an easy half-measure to full visibility (and accessibility), and imo it's something the developers should consider.

Maps app - powered by Mapbox, not HERE, as Sidephone's website advertised (grrr). It's middling, in terms of performance. Not much for options in terms of navigating within the app, and it will often not do anything when you search an address. No option to find your location with the touch of a button, either. Organic Maps is definitely the better choice.

These are all early impressions, but I'm pretty happy over all! Looking forward to playing around with my new phone over the next few days.

EU shipping

Hey guys!

I know you are probably tired of all the posts about shipping but I haven't seen any about shipping in the EU since it started. I've seen people getting their Sidephones left, right and center and the shipping times seemed fast. But for me, Dealer Send's last update was on the 27th, a week ago, saying "Item depart from origin." so I assume it already left Hong Kong. I haven't really ordered anything before that needed international shipping so I have to ask. Is this normal?

Arrived in UK! 5th June order

Interestingly, I wasn’t contacted about having to pay any customs? It just turned up today! I presume that means I won’t have to, as I was of the understanding that any customs are to be paid before you receive your package.
